Adsorption Of Water And Benzene Vapour In Mesoporous Materials, Paulina Paulina
Makara Journal of Science
Mesoporous materials have attracted the attention of many researchers due to the potential applications promised by the materials. This article discusses adsorption of water and benzene vapour in mesoporous materials (mesoporous silica: MCM-41, MCM-48 and their modification). MCM-41 and MCM-48 were synthesized hydrothermally at 100 o C using cethyltrimethylammonium chloride or dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide for MCM-41 (C16) or MCM-41 (C12) respectively and a mixture of cethyltrimethylammonium bromide and Triton X-100 for MCM-48 as templates. Their modifications were conducted by silylation of MCM-41 (C16) and MCM-48 with trimethylchloro silane (MCM16- TMCS and MCM48-TMCS) and t-butyldimethylchloro silane (MCM16-TBDMCS and MCM48-TBDMCS). Results showed that …

2008 Awards
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
We are healthily skeptical about the newsworthiness of award recipients — prizes don’t, after all, always go to the right people. But a well-bequeathed award can draw attention to an intriguing book or piece of writing that one might have otherwise missed.
In an attempt at a premature 2008 awards wrap-up, here are a few that you might have overlooked.
1. There was consternation from the Chinese state in August and September over the mention that activist Hu Jia might be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. While he didn’t win the Nobel, he was awarded the Sakharov Prize by the …

The Evolution Of Property Rights: A Synthetic Overview, James E. Krier
The Evolution Of Property Rights: A Synthetic Overview, James E. Krier
Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009
In this paper I review, extend, and critique two contrasting approaches to the evolution of property rights. The legal literature on the subject is dominated by a conventional approach, which holds a virtual monopoly despite its many shortcomings, and the literature neglects an alternative approach, despite its many virtues (including, but not limited to, the virtue of responding to many of the conventional approach’s deficiencies). The paper provides an overview of both approaches, including a brief intellectual history of each – and should thus inform readers without specialized knowledge of the subject but nevertheless interested in it – and aims …

Bnip3 is a BH3-only member of the Bcl-2 family of apoptotic proteins. Our laboratory has previously shown that Bnip3 induces a unique pathway of cardiac myocyte cell death, characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction, cytochrome c release and DNA fragmentation. Bnip3 is induced by hypoxia and the death pathway is activated by concurrent acidosis. We have shown that hypoxia-acidosis creates an environment that is permissive to calpain but not caspase activation and is characterized by enhanced DNase(s) activity as evidenced by genomic DNA fragmentation. This dissertation describes the nuclear consequences of Bnip3 activation by hypoxia-acidosis. Chapter 3 presents my evidence that hypoxia …
Challenging Current Paradigms Related To Cardiomyopathies: Are Changes In The Calcium Sensitivity Of Myofilaments Containing Mutations Good Predictors Of The Phenotypic Outcomes?, David Dweck
Open Access Dissertations
Three novel mutations (G159D, L29Q and E59D/D75Y) in cardiac troponin C (CTnC) associate their clinical outcomes with a given cardiomyopathy. Current paradigms propose that sarcomeric mutations associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) decrease the myofilament calcium sensitivity while those associated with hypertrophic (HCM) cardiomyopathy increase it. Therefore, we incorporated the mutant CTnCs into skinned cardiac muscle in order to determine if their effects on the calcium regulation of tension and ATPase activity coincide with the current paradigms and phenotypic outcomes. This required the development of new calculator programs to solve complex ionic equilibria to more accurately buffer and expand the free …
