Model-Independent Extraction Of The Kλp Coupling Constant, Terry Mart Nov 2008

Model-Independent Extraction Of The Kλp Coupling Constant, Terry Mart

Makara Journal of Science

We have extracted the kaon-hyperon-nucleon coupling constant by means of a model-independent method and recent experimental data on kaon photoproduction off a nucleon. The extracted coupling constant is consistent with the SU(3) prediction as well as with the values obtained from the kaon-nucleon scattering process.

Kompaktibilitas Komposit Isotropik Al/Al2o3 Dengan Variabel Waktu Tahan Sinter, Widyastuti Widyastuti, Eddy S. Siradj, Dedi Priadi, Anne Zulfia

Makara Journal of Science

Compactibility of Al/Al2O3 Isotropic Composite with Variation of Holding Time Sintering. The requirement of component with structural ability, light weight and also strength is increasing base on Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) by aluminum as matrix (AMCs). A structural ability is connected to composites compactibility which is depend on quality of interfacial bounding. Powder metallurgy is one of method to produce composite with powder mixing, compacting and sintering. Volume fractions reinforced and sintering time can influence composites compactibility. Volume fractions reinforced variable can produce different reinforcement effect. Beside that, on sintering enables the formation of new phase during sintering time. In …

Struktur Kecepatan Gelombang S Di Bawah Indonesia Melalui Analisis Seismogram Gempa-Gempa Bumi Di Sekitar Indonesia Pada Stasiun Observasi Ugm, Bagus Jaya Santosa

Makara Journal of Science

Seismogram Analysis of Earthquakes Around Indonesia In UGM Observational Station: S Velocity Structure. The seismogram comparison between the measured and synthetics seismogram has been carried out in observation station of UGM, where the seismograms are excited by earthquakes that occurred at North Sumatra, Sumbawa, Sunda Strait, around North Celebes and PNG. The ray paths from earthquake's hypocenter to UGM give opportunity to understand the earth structure alongside the front area of subduction zone. The calculation of synthetic seismogram needs input in the form of earth model, the Centroid Moment Tensor (CMT) solution of the earthquake and location of observation station, …

Medial Temporal Lobe Bold Activity At Rest Predicts Individual Differences In Memory Ability In Hhealthy Young Adults, Gagan S. Wig, Scott T. Grafton, Kathryn E. Demos, George L. Wolford, Steven E. Petersen, William M. Kelley

Dartmouth Scholarship

Human beings differ in their ability to form and retrieve lasting long-term memories. To explore the source of these individual differences, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) activity in healthy young adults (n = 50) during periods of resting fixation that were interleaved with periods of simple cognitive tasks. We report that medial temporal lobe BOLD activity during periods of rest predicts individual differences in memory ability. Specifically, individuals who exhibited greater magnitudes of task-induced deactivations in medial temporal lobe BOLD signal (as compared to periods of rest) demonstrated superior memory during offline testing. This relationship …

Product Family Design Using Smart Pareto Filters, Jonathan D. Yearsley Nov 2008

Product Family Design Using Smart Pareto Filters, Jonathan D. Yearsley

Theses and Dissertations

Product families are frequently used to provide consumers with a variety of appealing products and to help maintain reasonably low production costs for manufacturers. Three common objectives in the design of product families are used to balance the interests of both consumers and manufacturers. These objectives are to maximize (i) product performance, (ii) product distinctiveness as perceived by the consumer, and (iii) product commonality as seen by the manufacturer. In this thesis, three methods are introduced that use multiobjective optimization and Smart Pareto filtering to satisfy the three objectives of product family design. The methods are progressive in nature and …

Design And Testing Of A Pumpless Microelectromechanical System Nanoinjector, Quentin Theodore Aten Nov 2008

Design And Testing Of A Pumpless Microelectromechanical System Nanoinjector, Quentin Theodore Aten

Theses and Dissertations

A deeper understanding of human development and disease is made possible partly through the study of genetically modified model organisms, such as the common mouse (Mus musculus). By genetically modifying such model organisms, scientists can activate, deactivate, or highlight particular characteristics. A genetically modified animal is generated by adding exogenous (foreign) genetic material to one or more embryonic cells at their earliest stages of development. Frequently, this exogenous genetic material consists of specially engineered DNA, which is introduced into a fertilized egg cell (zygote). When successfully introduced into the zygote, the exogenous DNA will be incorporated into the …

War And Fashion: Political Views And How Military Styles Influence Fashion, Lauren Topor Nov 2008

War And Fashion: Political Views And How Military Styles Influence Fashion, Lauren Topor

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Women’s outerwear evolves and recreates new fashions based on new materials and historical influences. Whenever the United States goes to war, military styles emerge. However, the outerwear category of women’s apparel has not been thoroughly researched in regard to military influences. Regardless of people’s opinion of war, the influences in the clothing are very apparent. As a result, this study examines outerwear styles during the past two World Wars and the two Gulf war styles.

Since the beginning of World War I, fashion has been influenced by military uniforms. America’s participation in the war affected the designs, fabrics, and colors …

The Promise Of Academic Learning Time In A Dose-Response Model Of Early Reading Achievement, Benjamin Heuston Nov 2008

The Promise Of Academic Learning Time In A Dose-Response Model Of Early Reading Achievement, Benjamin Heuston

Theses and Dissertations

Reading has long been acknowledged to be a critical skill that is best acquired early in life. According to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reports, American public school children continue to struggle to master the basics of reading. Although federal funding in real dollars has increased consistently over time, reading scores have not followed suit, suggesting that fiscal resources have not been applied successfully to the variables that are directly related to reading acquisition and achievement. The current state of affairs therefore suggests the need for identifying a fiscally-targetable, instructionally-relevant variable with a direct, causal relationship …

The Open Road, Bryan Condra Nov 2008

The Open Road, Bryan Condra

Theses and Dissertations

In our journeys on the open road, we travel through a landscape of visual imagery composed of patterns, rhythms and a spectrum of changing colors. Our previous experiences, mental and physical attitudes and expectations, shape our perceptions. By visually interpreting and presenting my experiences of the journey on the open road I hoped to tell a story of how the open road energizes the creative spirit. My goal was to explore how the landscape is altered by motion and speed as we pass through it, and how the journey can be experienced in various ways. I wanted to investigate and …
