Pond Appeal Series: Teaching Community Stakeholders To Manage Pestiferous Aquatic Midge Emergences From Storm Water Retention Ponds, Kenneth T. Gioeli, R Leroy Creswell, Jeffrey P. Gellermann, Edward A. Skvarch
Journal of Extension
Saint Lucie West (Florida) residents living adjacent to storm water retention ponds complained about the emergence of large swarms of pestiferous aquatic midges. Pond Appeal is a program developed by the Saint Lucie County Cooperative Extension to educate residents about pond best management practices that would result in a reduction in midge emergences. One hundred and fifty people participated in the program. All participants indicated they increased their understanding of pond management techniques and adopted practice changes that enabled them to better manage these ponds. This resulted in a reduction in pestiferous aquatic midges and improved quality of life.

Team Approach To Pesticide Applicator Training, Testing, And Recertification In Four Central Florida Counties, Richard Tyson, Celeste White, Jennifer Welshans, Juanita Popenoe
Journal of Extension
A regional team approach to pesticide training and certification improves clientele opportunities to comply with regulations and requires less time per agent to implement the program. Agents in central Florida identified pesticide licenses with high public demand and developed education opportunities for this group. Program success was measured by comparing exam results from clients taking exams immediately after pesticide training with the results from clients who took the exams without training. Attendees realized a 21% increase in passing percentage. Agents can stretch limited resources and expand quality programs by reaching across county lines in a regional team approach.

Financial Simulations For Young Adults: Making The "Real World" Real, Barbara O’Neill
Journal of Extension
Simulations are a useful tool for teaching personal finance concepts. Keys to a successful simulation experience are easy to replicate materials, realistic scenarios, clear instructions for participants, and a thorough debriefing where students discuss their experiences and what they learned. Simulations provide an opportunity for students to appreciate the economic impact of a post-secondary education and to practice financial management skills such as check writing and budgeting. In addition, they are interactive, which makes learning fun. This article provides Extension educators with brief summaries of a "toolkit" of 11 simulation products that teach personal finance concepts to young adults.

Political Parties In Singapore, Malaysia, And The Philippines: Reflection Of Democratic Tendencies, Ulla Fionna
Political Parties In Singapore, Malaysia, And The Philippines: Reflection Of Democratic Tendencies, Ulla Fionna
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
This essay examines the role of political parties in different forms of government. In the three Southeast Asian countries, the different governments have distinctive methods of utilizing the parties according to their needs. The more democratic the country usually the less control the government has on the parties. The more reliant the government on its party, the more systematic its control over it. Consequently, the stronger control of government the less likely the parties would be able to reach democracy.

The article indicate the interpenetration between Amaterasu Oomikami and environment within the Japanese thought. The protection of environment as a product of interpretation of Japanese culture in reciprocal relation is categorized by: the normative – the real; the sacred – the profane; supranatural world – human world. The system classification is the product of knowledge from the Japanese way in seeing the world based on the classification of the inside (uchi) – the outside (soto/yoso). This classification and its attributes produce differentiation between the inside – the outside. The environment destruction is considered as disgrafuk and dirty action. Any violation …

Most of discourses in meetings, discussions, conferences and talk shows are not equipped with a method which analyzes the root cause and its fundamental solution, and even without the need of analyzing it. As the result,. the discourses almost never find the root cause, and so automatically there are be no fundamental solution. The Method of Root Cause Analysis and Solutions (MRCAS) gives a mode of thought figured by a flow chart and some examples. Application of MRCAS helps its users simultanously thinking inductively and deductively, qualitatively and quantitatively, more deeply and holistically, and also facilitate them in inter or …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Politic participation in democratic State is an indicator of valid implementation of highest State power exercise by people (people sovereignty), that is imbodied by their involvement in democracy event (general elections). The increasingly higher level of political participation indicates that people follow, understand, and engange in national activities. Reversely, a low level of political participation generally indicates that people place less appreciation or interest in national affairs or activities. The low level of peoples’s political participation is reflected in golput (golongan putih-white group or non-voting) attitude. In democratic perspective, golput attitude will of course has implication on development of democracy …

Do The Coefficients Of A Modular Form Really "Encode Arithmetic Data"?, Ken Mcmurdy, Hari Ravindran
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
Language and terminology are so critical to the understanding of modern math- ematics that it is often difficult for even very good mathematicians from different fields to discuss their work in any detail. As a result, common phrases often evolve within each discipline which attempt to capture the avor of some impor- tant idea while avoiding technicality and jargon. For example, when algebraic number theorists are asked why they are so interested in modular forms, it has become common to say with enthusiasm that the coefficients of a modular form "encode arithmetic data". If pressed further, one might go on …

The first thing to go is your sense of humour. Then it's the desire to do the things you used to do, and then the desire to do anything at all. Parts of your body ache that you don't even know the names of, and your eyes forget how to focus. Words you once knew aren't there any more, and there's less and less to say. People you once cared about fall by the wayside and you let them go, too.

Macroalgae And Eelgrass Mapping In Great Bay Estuary Using Aisa Hyperspectral Imagery, Shachak Pe'eri, J. Ru Morrison, Frederick T. Short, Arthur C. Mathieson, Anna Brook, Philip Trowbridge
PREP Reports & Publications
Increase in nitrogen concentration and declining eelgrass beds in Great Bay Estuary have been observed in the last decades. These two parameters are clear indicators of the impending problems for NH’s estuaries. The NH Department of Environmental Services (DES) in collaboration with the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) adopted the assumption that eelgrass survival can be used as the water quality target for nutrient criteria development for NH’s estuaries. One of the hypotheses put forward regarding eelgrass decline is that a possible eutrophication response to nutrient increases in the Great Bay Estuary has been the proliferation of nuisance macroalgae, which …

l was born in Los Angeles in 1947 and learned from my classmates in seventh grade that boys who wrote with their left hand or wore green and yellow on Thursdays were homos. Because I did both, I knew I was in deep trouble from the start and might have some pretending to do. Such was the atmosphere for LGBTQ folks in the United States throughout the 1950s. Things loosened just a bit in the 1960s, when hippies were shaking society up. Then, in the 1970s, gay folks seemed to be-a lot more visible--disturbingly so, in the minds of many-and …
