Preliminary Perspectives On The Health Needs Of Pastoral Women On The Borana Plateau Using Participatory Approaches, D. Layne Coppock, Seyoum Tezera, Solomon Desta Dec 2008

Preliminary Perspectives On The Health Needs Of Pastoral Women On The Borana Plateau Using Participatory Approaches, D. Layne Coppock, Seyoum Tezera, Solomon Desta

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Since 2000, the PARIMA project has conducted participatory research and outreach among pastoralists in southern Ethiopia. This has led to notable achievements in terms of forming collective-action groups dominated by women, stimulation of sustainable micro-finance and micro-enterprise activities, and improving linkages of pastoral producers to livestock markets. Despite such gains, there are many other challenges to be addressed. One is poor human health. PARIMA researchers used participatory and qualitative methods to conduct a preliminary assessment of women’s health problems among members of six, well-established collective-action groups from the Borana and Gugi zones in the Oromia Regional State during 2008. Conventional …

Successful Implementation Of Collective Action And Human-Capacity Building Among Pastoralists In Southern Ethiopia: Lessons Learned, 2001-2008, D. Layne Coppock, Seyoum Tezera, Solomon Desta, Getachew Gebru

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Since 2000 the PARIMA project has implemented pilot risk-management activities among poverty-stricken, semi-settled pastoralists in southern Ethiopia. The goal has been to improve human welfare via collective action and capacity building. Outcomes include progress in income generation, asset conservation, and livelihood diversification. The approach has been unique to southern Ethiopia in that a bottom-up, participatory perspective has dominated. It has focused on the priorities and felt needs of local people rather than top-down development of livestock or agricultural technology. Fifty-nine collective-action groups were created. Dominated by women, they have included over 2,300 members and most groups have been recently merged …

Are Cattle Die-Offs Predictable On The Borana Plateau, D. Layne Coppock, Getachew Gebru, Solomon Desta, Sintayehu Mesele, Seyoum Tezerra

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Drought regularly affects rangelands and contributes to high death rates for livestock and poverty for pastoralists. But do livestock losses occur randomly simply when rainfall is low, or are they cyclical and predictable? Previously, PARIMA researchers proposed that high stocking rates—combined with low rainfall—trigger livestock die-offs on the Borana Plateau. It takes about six years for animal numbers to recover, setting the stage for another die-off when a dry year occurs. This “boom-and-bust” cycle is based on observed herd crashes in 1983-5, 1991-3, and 1998-9. Researchers predicted in 2002 that the next major die-off would occur during 2004-06, and one …

What Are Consumers In Moyale, Kenya Willing To Pay For Improved Milk Quality?, D. Layne Coppock, Francis O. Wayua, Mohamed G. Shibia, Moses S. Mamo Dec 2008

What Are Consumers In Moyale, Kenya Willing To Pay For Improved Milk Quality?, D. Layne Coppock, Francis O. Wayua, Mohamed G. Shibia, Moses S. Mamo

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Pastoralists in northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia may be able to diversify income by selling milk to urban residents. However, milk sold in open-air markets is often low in quality because it has been transported long distances without refrigeration and is subject to spoilage, or because milk is adulterated prior to sale to boost volume or enhance appearance. Open-air markets are characterized by low-income consumers who must make choices about milk quality with virtually no information other than their own sensory perceptions. PARIMA researchers used an experimental-auction approach to determine what residents in Moyale, Kenya, are willing to pay (WTP) …

Style Investing And Institutional Investors, Kenneth Froot, Melvyn Teo Dec 2008

Style Investing And Institutional Investors, Kenneth Froot, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper explores the importance and price implications of style investing by institutional investors in the stock market. To analyze styles, we assign stocks to deciles or segments across three style dimensions: size, value/growth, and sector. We find strong evidence that institutional investors reallocate across style groupings more intensively than across random stock groupings. In addition, we show that own segment style inflows and returns positively forecast future stock returns, while distant segment style inflows and returns forecast negatively. We argue that behavioral theories play a role in explaining these results.

Corporate Venture Capital, Disembodied Experimentation And Capability Development, Thomas Keil, Ekko Autio, Gerard George Dec 2008

Corporate Venture Capital, Disembodied Experimentation And Capability Development, Thomas Keil, Ekko Autio, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Studies invoking a capabilities lens often ascribe deliberateness in organizational decisions to develop new capabilities. Drawing on five longitudinal case studies of large, global firms in the information and communication technology sector, we examine how firms engender cognizance of their future capability needs in situations characterized by high decision-making uncertainty. We develop a theoretical account of how firms use investments in start-ups to actively engage in experimentation outside organizational boundaries, a learning process which we term as disembodied experimentation. Disembodied experimentation creates awareness of voids in the capability base of an incumbent and helps to overcome inertial restraints thereby influencing …

Is Christian Schooling Really At Loggerheads With The Ideas Of Diversity And Tolerance? A Rejoinder, Matthew Etherington Dec 2008

Is Christian Schooling Really At Loggerheads With The Ideas Of Diversity And Tolerance? A Rejoinder, Matthew Etherington

Education Papers and Journal Articles

This article builds on the foundations and evaluations laid recently by Symes and Gulson in their 2005 article, Crucifying Education: The rise and rise of new Christian schooling in Australia. It evaluates the warrant of Christian schooling within a liberal democracy and offers a rejoinder for defending the rights of Christian particularism within a secular educational system such as operates in Australia. In similar vein to Pike’s (2004) challenge against the discrediting of Christian schooling in England, this article also questions the fundamental liberal tenet of individual autonomy as the supreme goal of education.

The main thesis of this paper …

Side-Effects Of Pesticides On The Life Cycle Of The Mite Pathogenic Fungus Neozygites Floridana, V. W. Wekesa, M. Knapp, I. Delalibera

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The tomato red spider mite, Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard, is an invasive species in Africa causing considerable damage to Solanaceous crops. The fungal pathogen Neozygites floridana Weiser and Muma from Brazil has been considered a potential candidate for introduction into Africa for the control of T. evansi. To be incorporated in the tomato production system, N. floridana has to be compatible with the pesticides used for the control of other pests and diseases. Pesticides used in tomatoes that might affect the fungus were therefore studied by the use of different methods. Two insecticides (Lambda-cyhalothrin and Methomyl), two acaricides (Propargite …

Spiral Of Silence And The Iraq War, Jessica Drake Dec 2008

Spiral Of Silence And The Iraq War, Jessica Drake

Theses

Discussing controversial issues may be hard for some individuals because they fear they may become isolated. The Iraq War serves as one such controversy in which some individuals might avoid publicly expressing their opinion. Spiral of silence, a communication theory set forth by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann can be used to explain why some individuals will publicly express their opinion of the Iraq War while others will not. A Web-based survey was distributed to Rochester Institute of Technology faculty, staff and students. This study investigated public opinion expression through interactive forms of media such as discussion forums, blogs and Web sites.

Agenda-Setting And The Media: A Look At Child Welfare Legislation, 1995-2005, Tamara Temoney Dec 2008

Agenda-Setting And The Media: A Look At Child Welfare Legislation, 1995-2005, Tamara Temoney

Theses and Dissertations

This project used a content analysis methodology to determine the agenda-setting capacity of the media to influence child welfare legislation in a state legislature. With a foundation in agenda-setting theory, this study identifies how the coverage of child abuse and neglect in the print media impacts decision-makers to introduce legislation related to child abuse and neglect. Through a comparison of the issues covered in the newspaper with the issues receiving legislative attention, this study showed that media influence varies by topic, with some topics being more open to media affects than others. A second component of this study analyzed how …

Making Sense Of The Access Problem: A New Methodology For Analyzing The Postsecondary Education Decision, Farrah Graham Dec 2008

Making Sense Of The Access Problem: A New Methodology For Analyzing The Postsecondary Education Decision, Farrah Graham

Theses and Dissertations

This study is interested in defining new variables that contribute to the explanation of whether or not an individual applies to postsecondary institutions. Prior research has explained differences based on demographic variables, such as first generation status, income and race, and differences in information and social support that an individual possesses. While these variables have a significant effect on the decision, they do not completely explain why individuals decide to pursue postsecondary education. This research suggests that how an individual moves through the decision process, as well as how information is interpreted and used will have an effect on the …

Creation Of A Mouse With A Humanized Fpgs Gene Compatible With Normal Development, Linying Xie Dec 2008

Creation Of A Mouse With A Humanized Fpgs Gene Compatible With Normal Development, Linying Xie

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract: Folylpoly-γ-glutamate synthetase (FPGS) catalyzes the formation of polyglutamate forms of the reduced folates and antifolates such as methotrexate (MTX) and pemetrexed; this allows the retention of folates and antifolate cancer drugs inside the cell. The enzyme activity of FPGS is essential for cell proliferation and survival. The mouse fpgs gene contains two promoters spaced 10 kb apart which are activated in a tissue-specific manner. The upstream promoter (P1) and exons A1a and A1b are used in some differentiated tissues, mainly liver and kidney, whereas the downstream promoter (P2) and exon 1 are used in rapidly dividing cells. In contrast, …

Tolerance Intervals In Random-Effects Models, Kakotan Sanogo Dec 2008

Tolerance Intervals In Random-Effects Models, Kakotan Sanogo

Theses and Dissertations

In the pharmaceutical setting, it is often necessary to establish the shelf life of a drug product and sometimes suitable to assess the risk of product failure at the desired expiry period. The current statistical methodology use confidence intervals for the predicted mean to establish the expiry period and prediction intervals for a predicted new assay value or a tolerance interval for a proportion of the population for use in a risk assessment. A major concern is that most methodology treat a homogeneous subpopulation, say batch, either as a fixed effect and therefore uses a fixed-effects regression model (Graybill, 1976) …

Adhesion Of Copper To Photo-Oxidized Polyimides, Mayuri Razdan Dec 2008

Adhesion Of Copper To Photo-Oxidized Polyimides, Mayuri Razdan

Theses

Polyimides (PIs) are often used as electrical insulation between levels of circuitry in the manufacture of electronic components. Copper adhesion to polyimide (PIs) is of great importance in the construction of these microsystem devices. The two polyimides, Kapton-HN (PMDA-ODA) and Upilex-S (BPDA-PDA) were studied with low pressure (253.7 nm) and medium pressure Hg lamps (broad band of radiation centered at ca. 300 nm). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), a highly sensitive surface analytical technique, was used to observe the surface modification within the top 2-5 nm. XPS analysis showed an increase in the O/C ratio with treatment time which appeared mostly …

In addition, preliminary examinations are made to identify potential associations between geographic variability in the prevalence of obesity and the characteristics of individuals and places with variable …

Living Where The Flow Is Right: How Flow Affects Feeding In Bryozoans, Marney C. Pratt Dec 2008

Living Where The Flow Is Right: How Flow Affects Feeding In Bryozoans, Marney C. Pratt

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bryozoans are suspension feeding colonial animals that remain attached to the substratum or other surfaces. How well a bryozoan can feed in a particular flow regime could help determine the distribution and abundance of that bryozoan. I tested how velocity of flow affects feeding rate in four species of bryozoans in the laboratory and how these species perform in different flow regimes in the field. I found that one species, Membranipora membranacea, had a higher ingestion rate than did the other three species at all velocities of flow tested. Membranipora also had a higher rate of ingestion at intermediate velocities, …

University Students' Perceptions Of Their Parents' Childrearing Styles Associated With Their Inclinations To Become Parents, Judi Mccracken Dec 2008

University Students' Perceptions Of Their Parents' Childrearing Styles Associated With Their Inclinations To Become Parents, Judi Mccracken

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Researchers have associated Diane Baumrind's parenting styles (Baumrind, 1967; Baumrind, 1966; Baumrind, 1968; Baumrind, 1971) with countless outcomes among children, adolescents, and adults. However, few, if any, have investigated an age group's perceptions of their childrearing compared with their inclination to become parents. This study examined 67 West Virginia University students' responses to the Adapted Parenting Attribute Questionnaire (APAQ) completed by Child Development and Family Studies majors in 2007. The purpose was to determine patterns of perceptions in guardians' parenting styles, then compare the participants' inclinations to become parents and their rankings of importance (low, medium, or high; low and …

'Fabrication And Characterization Of Polymer Blends And Composites Derived From Biopolymers', Suraj Sharma Dec 2008

'Fabrication And Characterization Of Polymer Blends And Composites Derived From Biopolymers', Suraj Sharma

All Dissertations

This research focuses on fabricating blends and composites from natural polymers especially from proteins and natural epoxy, and describing the properties of plastics made from them. Specifically, plastic samples from partially denatured feathermeal and bloodmeal proteins, derived from the animal co-products (rendering) industry, were successfully produced through a compression molding process. The modulus (stiffness) of the material obtained was found to be comparable with that of commercial synthetic materials, such as polystyrene, but was found to have lower toughness characteristics, which is a common phenomenon among plastics produced from animal and plant proteins. Therefore, this study explored blending methods for …

Characterization Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Mechanical And Frictional Properties Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Jason Hemmer Dec 2008

Characterization Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Mechanical And Frictional Properties Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Jason Hemmer

All Dissertations

A working hypothesis within the Laboratory of Vascular Research is that mechanical loading on vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), especially due to solid contact from endovascular devices, contributes to the development of restenosis. In order to better understand the role of mechanical loading on VSMCs in vascular disease development, it is imperative to understand the mechanical properties of VSMCs themselves. To measure the viscoelastic and frictional properties of living VSMCs in an in vitro setting, an atomic force microscope (AFM) was utilized, thereby allowing for mechanical testing of living cells in a fluid environment. In the first phase of research, …

Economic Analysis Of Adoption Of Water-Saving Land Improvements In Northern China, Xuanwen Wang Dec 2008

Economic Analysis Of Adoption Of Water-Saving Land Improvements In Northern China, Xuanwen Wang

All Dissertations

Determinants for farmers' choice of water-saving land improvements in Northern China are analyzed with a sample survey of 401 villages. The analysis focuses on two aspects of adoption, whether or not to adopt and if a technology is adopted, how much land to which to apply the technology. In the first stage, 'whether to adopt', multinomial logit models are applied to analyze the discrete choice of alternative land improvement strategies. In the second stage of adoption, 'how much to adopt', both sample selection models and OLS models are utilized to measure the adoption extent of field leveling, use of borders, …

Aperture Coupling And Penetration In Various Configurations, Jason Keen Dec 2008

Aperture Coupling And Penetration In Various Configurations, Jason Keen

All Dissertations

The problem of a slot in a perfectly conducting surface is addressed for a variety of configurations using both integral equation and transmission line techniques. The use of Bethe hole theory to model short slots is discussed and utilized where appropriate. Primary problems of discussion are a slot array, wires coupling through slots in a ground plane, and wires coupling through slots in a bent ground plane. Additionally, the use of the extended BLT formulation for incorporation of slot effects in a transmission line problem is addressed. In this manuscript, the work of Bethe is extended to include cross-aperture coupling …

Human Microvasculature Fabrication Using Thermal Inkjet Printing Technology, Xiaofeng Cui Dec 2008

Human Microvasculature Fabrication Using Thermal Inkjet Printing Technology, Xiaofeng Cui

All Dissertations

The current tissue engineering paradigm is that successfully engineered thick tissues must include vasculature. As biological approaches alone such as VGEF have fallen short of their promises, one may look for an engineering approach to build microvasculature. With the advent of cell printing, one may be able to build precise human microvasculature with suitable bio-ink. Human Microvascular Endothelial Cells (HMVEC) and fibrin were studied as bio-ink for microvasculature construction. Endothelial cells are the only cells to compose the human capillaries and also the major cells of blood vessel intima layer. Fibrin has been already widely recognized as tissue engineering scaffold …

Fabrication And Optical Properties Of Noble Metal Nanostructures, Mark Kinnan Dec 2008

Fabrication And Optical Properties Of Noble Metal Nanostructures, Mark Kinnan

All Dissertations

Experimental and theoretical results are presented in Chapters 2, 3, and 4 on the effects of dielectric medium, particle size, and interparticle distance, respectively, on plasmon coupling in two-dimensional arrays of silver nanoparticles. The arrays were fabricated via the self-assembly of single crystal particles from c.a. 46 nm to 287 nm on PVP-modified glass substrates. Spin-coated poly(methylmethacrylate) layers were used to immobilize the particles and prevent their surface aggregation. Varying the thickness of the PMMA layer made it possible to change the average dielectric medium between the particles. UV-Visible spectra of different arrays were compared to the corresponding electron microscope …

Effect Of Clinically Relevant Mechanical Forces On Smooth Muscle Cell Response In Model Of Balloon Angioplasty, Kara Acampora Dec 2008

Effect Of Clinically Relevant Mechanical Forces On Smooth Muscle Cell Response In Model Of Balloon Angioplasty, Kara Acampora

All Dissertations

Restenosis remains a common problem affecting the patency of endovascular intervention such as balloon angioplasty and stent placement as treatments for atherosclerosis. Denudation of the endothelial layer and the increased injury from balloon deployment can cause phenotypic changes in surrounding vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in vivo. The presented work modeled this mechanical environment in vitro to investigate the role of the altered mechanical environment on the phenotypic response of SMCs. Through the system design and CFD channel characterization, a six-independent-channel system providing low oscillating wall shear stress (WSS) was manufactured to apply concurrent shear and tensile forces with uniform …
