This research project study centered on the examination of community capitals that exist within a thriving rural community located in the upper Great Plains region. Grounded theory helped in the analysis of the data to understand how community capitals contributed to the socioeconomic growth and well-being of a thriving rural community. Interview data were collected from key informants and questionnaire results from business owners showed there were a number of factors that contributed to the community's ability to thrive. The main contributing factor to the growth of the community was a change to a positive mindset among rural community leaders. …

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is a common opportunistic pathogen that invades the susceptible host. Alveolar macrophages (AM) play a pivotal role in defending against invading pathogens in the lungs. The effectiveness of AM in combating PA infection has not been studied in detail. The goal was to identify the key components involved in mounting an effective innate immune response using the murine lung infection as a model to understand the host - pathogen interactions. Our most important finding was the involvement of Lyn tyrosine kinase, a member of Src family tyrosine kinases, in orchestrating the host cell response to PA invasion. …

Background:The incidence of tuberculosis in Pakistan is 181/100,000 population. However, information about transmission and geographical prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains and their evolutionary genetics as well as drug resistance remains limited. Our objective was to determine the clonal composition, evolutionary genetics and drug resistance of M. tuberculosis isolates from different regions of the country.

Methods:

M. tuberculosis strains isolated (2003-2005) from specimens submitted to the laboratory through collection units nationwide were included. Drug susceptibility was performed and strains were spoligotyped.

Results:

Of 926 M. tuberculosis strains studied, 721(78%) were grouped into 59 "shared types", while 205 (22%) were identified …

Introduction: Chemotherapy Induced neutropenia is a frequent and serious complication of cytotoxic cancer treatment. Granulocyte colony stimulating factors (G-CSF) are frequently used to counter neutropenia, attempt rapid recovery of Patients and allow for continuation of treatment without compromise on dose, especially in curative malignancies. First-principles density-functional calculations of the electronic structure, energy band gaps (E_g), and strain-induced band gap changes in moderate-gap single-walled (n,0) carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are presented. It is confirmed that (n,0) SWNTs fall into two classes depending upon n mod 3=1 or 2. E_g is always lower for “mod 1” than for “mod 2” SWNTs of similar diameter. For n<10, strong curvature effects dominate E_g; from n=10 to 17, the E_g oscillations, amplified due to σ−π mixing, decrease and can be explained very well with a tight-binding model which includes trigonal warping. African American underrepresentation in positions of power within the intercollegiate and professional sports hierarchy continues to be a major concern among the media, professional sports organizations, and academic researchers. Although African Americans dominate the rosters of college and professional football teams, they remain grossly underrepresented in the management ranks. In 2002, the NFL designed a diversity plan that is commonly referred to as the "Rooney Rule" in order to increase the recruitment of African-Americans in head coaching positions. Several types of design models are currently being used to develop marine protected areas (MPAs) for conservation of coastal and pelagic ecosystems. However, few studies have applied these models in large estuaries which have unique characteristics that need to be considered in MPA design, including strong physical, chemical and biological gradients and significant human impacts. We explored how one design model, MARXAN, can be applied to estuarine systems by developing MPA design scenarios for Long Island Sound, an estuary in the northeastern USA. The twospotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch is a common pest on soybean plants. To clarify plantarthropod interaction on mite-soybean system, leaf fluorescence, photosynthetic responses to variable carbon dioxide levels, and chlorophyll content were evaluated. Significant photosynthetic rate reduction was observed due to stomatal limitation. Stomatal closure was the major plant physiological response. As a consequence, there was reduction in photosynthetic rates. Surprisingly, plants did not show chlorophyll content reduction associated with photosynthetic impairment. No differences in fluorescence data indicate that T. urticae injury did not impair the function of light harvesting and photoelectron transport. These results showed that T. …

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) β receptor activation inhibits N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-evoked currents in hippocampal and cortical neurons via the activation of phospholipase Cγ, PKC, the release of intracellular calcium, and a rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton. In the hippocampus, the majority of NMDA receptors are heteromeric; most are composed of 2 NR1 subunits and 2 NR2A or 2 NR2B subunits. Using NR2B- and NR2A-specific antagonists, we demonstrate that PDGF-BB treatment preferentially inhibits NR2B-containing NMDA receptor currents in CA1 hippocampal neurons and enhances long-term depression in an NR2B subunit-dependent manner.
