Overreaction To Fearsome Risks, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard Zeckhauser Dec 2008

Overreaction To Fearsome Risks, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard Zeckhauser

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Fearsome risks are those that stimulate strong emotional responses. Such risks, which usually involve high consequences, tend to have low probabilities, since life today is no longer nasty, brutish and short. In the face of a low-probability fearsome risk, people often exaggerate the benefits of preventive, risk-reducing, or ameliorative measures. In both personal life and politics, the result is damaging overreactions to risks. We offer evidence for the phenomenon of probability neglect, failing to distinguish between high and low-probability risks. Action bias is a likely result.

The Many Faces Of Fault In Contract Law: Or How To Do Economics Right, Richard A. Epstein Dec 2008

The Many Faces Of Fault In Contract Law: Or How To Do Economics Right, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Modern law often rests on the assumption that a uniform cost/benefit formula is the proper way to determine fault in ordinary contract disputes. This Article disputes that vision by defending the view that different standards of fault are appropriate in different contexts. The central distinction is one that holds parties in gratuitous transactions only to the standard of care that they bring to their own affairs, while insisting on the higher objective standard of ordinary care in commercial transactions. That bifurcation leads to efficient searches. Persons who hold themselves out in particular lines of business in effect warrant their ability …

Impulsivity And Trauma Exposure In Adolescents, Lisa B. Greene Dec 2008

Impulsivity And Trauma Exposure In Adolescents, Lisa B. Greene

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Trauma exposure is prevalent among adolescents and may have a negative impact on social, educational, and occupational functioning. Research indicates that individual-level variables, such as impulsivity, may be risk factors for exposure to traumatic events but the findings have been mixed. This study examined the relation between impulsivity and accidental trauma exposure using a multi-method, multi-informant procedure with a community sample of 48 adolescents. Mean age was 15.2 (SD = 1.38) and the sample was predominantly female (62.5%) and predominantly Caucasian (87.5%). No significant difference was noted between genders in terms of number of traumatic events reported. As a whole, …

The Effect Of Classroom Experiences On Future Success, Jennifer R. Presson

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis explores the impact that classroom experiences have upon students’ academic and future success. It begins by discussing Charles Dickens’ criticism of education in his works, specifically in the novel Hard Times. Next, the thesis examines a number of studies that have sought to identify the factors that determine students’ academic success. Finally, the careers of Erin Gruwell and Rafe Esquith are described as ‘real life’ examples of the way that teachers can impact students’ success.

A Three-Dimensional Pattern-Space Representation For Volumetric Arrays, William C. Barott, Paul G. Steffes Dec 2008

A Three-Dimensional Pattern-Space Representation For Volumetric Arrays, William C. Barott, Paul G. Steffes

Publications

A three-dimensional pattern-space representation is presented for volumetric arrays. In this representation, the radiation pattern of an array is formed by the evaluation of the three-dimensional pattern-space on a spherical surface. The scan angle of the array determines the position of this surface within the pattern-space. This pattern-space representation is used in conjunction with a genetic algorithm to minimize the sidelobe levels exhibited by a thinned volumetric array during scanning.

Teacher And Technology: How Faculty Resource Centers Can Enhance Higher Education Teaching And Learning, John T. Freden

Theses and Dissertations

As many classrooms around the world utilize instructional technology to attempt to enhance student learning, the faculty resource centers that support this instructional technology are sometimes left out of the equation. This study asks the question "What can faculty resource centers do to help teachers integrate instructional technology to improve student learning?" To help answer this question surveys were sent out to educators at two different higher education institutions. Questions were asked in a survey about the educators' background information, instructional technology, and faculty resource centers. The , information gathered from this survey is useful to faculty resource centers as …

Organizational Change In A Higher Education Institution: The Impact Of Increasing International Student Enrollment On University Of Services, Glenda Kim Cousins

Theses and Dissertations

Using a grounded theory approach, this study explored organizational change in higher education, the research examined how direct service staff, directors, and administrators perceived and responded to changes created by increasing international student numbers, and how the organization of Academic and Student Affairs adapted to these changes. The data supported that every person perceived having a certain level of power to influence change but the amount of power depended on an individual's understanding of a situation, persuasiveness in motivating people, relational dynamics with others, and participation within the flow of communication. The study found two processes operating simultaneously as individuals …

Chebyshev Collocation Method For The Effect Of Variable Thermal Conductivity On Micropolar Fluid Flow Over Vertical Cylinder With Variable Surface Temperature, Nasser S. Elgazery, Nader Y. Abd Elazem Dec 2008

Chebyshev Collocation Method For The Effect Of Variable Thermal Conductivity On Micropolar Fluid Flow Over Vertical Cylinder With Variable Surface Temperature, Nasser S. Elgazery, Nader Y. Abd Elazem

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

An analysis is performed to study the role of a variable thermal conductivity on unsteady free convection in a micro-polar fluid past a semi-infinite vertical cylinder with variable surface temperature in the presence of magnetic filed and radiation. The surface temperature is measured to vary as a power of the axial coordinate measured from the leading edge of the cylinder. The governing non-linear partial differential equations are transformed into a linear algebraic system utilizing Chebyshev collocation method in spatial and Crank-Nicolson method in time. Numerical results for the velocity, angular velocity and temperature profiles as well as for the local …

ETSU Faculty Works

In the title complex, [La2(C10H10NO3)2(NO3)4(C12H8N2)4], each La III ion is ten-coordinated by four N atoms from two bidentate 1,10-phenanthroline ligands and by six O atoms, two from the N-acetyl-N-phenyl-glycinate ligands and four from two nitrate anions. Two LaIII cations, which exhibit a distorted bicapped square-anti-prismatic coordination, are bridged by two N-acetyl-N-phenyl- glycinate ligands into a dimeric structure, generated by inversion symmetry. There is a π-π contact between the benzene rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.409 (3) Å].

Cannabinoid (Cb2) Receptor Deficiency Reduces The Susceptibility Of Macrophages To Oxidized Ldl/Oxysterol-Induced Apoptosis, Natalie Freeman-Anderson, Theresa G. Pickle, Courtney D. Netherland, Alicia Bales, Nancy E. Buckley, Douglas P. Thewke Dec 2008

Cannabinoid (Cb2) Receptor Deficiency Reduces The Susceptibility Of Macrophages To Oxidized Ldl/Oxysterol-Induced Apoptosis, Natalie Freeman-Anderson, Theresa G. Pickle, Courtney D. Netherland, Alicia Bales, Nancy E. Buckley, Douglas P. Thewke

ETSU Faculty Works

Macrophage apoptosis is an important process in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. Oxidized low-density lipoproteins (OxLDL) are a major component of lesions and potently induce macrophage apoptosis. Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), the predominant macrophage cannabinoid receptor, modulates several macrophage processes associated with ongoing atherosclerosis; however, the role of CB2 in macrophage apoptosis is unknown. To determine if CB2 influences a macrophage apoptotic pathway relevant to atherosclerosis, we examined the effect of CB2 deficiency on OxLDL-induced macrophage apoptosis. In situ terminal transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) analysis of resident peritoneal macrophages detected significantly fewer apoptotic CB2-/- macrophages than CB2+/+ macrophages after …
