Into The Great Wide Open: The West-German Modernist Bungalow Of The 1960s As A Psycho-Political Re-Creation Of Home, Carola Ebert

It was in the late the 1950s—on the brink of a prospering, forward-looking era after the re-building of destroyed cities—that the term ‘Bungalow’ arrived in West-Germany, where it took on specific cultural connotations that differ from those in the Anglo-American world. Paradoxically, in Germany the term itself is understood in reference to this world until today, even if the West- German bungalow differs greatly in its architecture. The West-German bungalow marks the intersection of two global phenomena: bungalow culture and modern architecture. Its cultural significance however, can only be understood in relation to the particulars of German history. I will …
Did At&T Die In Vain? An Empirical Comparison Of At&T And Bell Canada, Eli M. Noam
Did At&T Die In Vain? An Empirical Comparison Of At&T And Bell Canada, Eli M. Noam
Federal Communications Law Journal
"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.
Did the Divestiture of AT&T achieve its purpose? It is helpful to turn to Canada, whose telecommunications industry and regulation were similar but which did not experience a divestiture. Since AT&T was split up in 1982-4, national telecom market concentration in the U.S. has bounced back to a national duopoly structure, with an HHI concentration index of 2,986, higher than for Canada's similar national duopoly with an HHI of 2,463. Local telecom wireline competition is …

Insights Into Biogeophysical Signatures Using Polarization Force Microscopy, Elizabeth Bartosik
Insights Into Biogeophysical Signatures Using Polarization Force Microscopy, Elizabeth Bartosik
All Theses
The success of bioremediation strategies is dependent upon effective monitoring of microorganisms in the subsurface. Induced polarization (IP) may represent a cost-effective, complementary technique to existing borehole-based microbe detection schemes. Recent studies show a significant, yet poorly understood IP effect associated with the presence of bacteria in aqueous and porous media. This effect is believed to be rooted in the physicochemical surface interactions between cells and minerals which we probe using polarization force microscopy. Polarization force experiments were conducted on a hydrated mica surface using the gram positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis and the gram negative bacterium Escherichia coli. On all …

Potential For Abrupt Changes In Atmospheric Methane, Edward Brook, David Archer, Steve Frolking, David Lawrence
Potential For Abrupt Changes In Atmospheric Methane, Edward Brook, David Archer, Steve Frolking, David Lawrence
Earth Sciences
Methane (CH4) is the second most important greenhouse gas that humans directly influence, carbon dioxide (CO2) being first. Concerns about methane’s role in abrupt climate change stem primarily from (1) the large quantities of methane stored as solid methane hydrate on the sea floor and to a lesser degree in terrestrial sediments, and the possibility that these reservoirs could become unstable in the face of future global warming, and (2) the possibility of large-scale conversion of frozen soil in the high- latitude Northern Hemisphere to methane producing wetland, due to accelerated warming at high latitudes. This chapter summarizes the current …

Biodiversity Of Supplemental Wildlife Plantings And Thinned And Burned Pine Habitats In South Carolina, Marguerite Porter
Biodiversity Of Supplemental Wildlife Plantings And Thinned And Burned Pine Habitats In South Carolina, Marguerite Porter
All Theses
Biodiversity conservation is currently an important focus for forest and wildlife management. The overall objective of this study was to compare the diversity of invertebrates and vegetation in white-tailed deer food plots and natural forage areas for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) as indicators of biodiversity. Invertebrates were chosen as the bio-indicator due to their magnitude of contribution to the biodiversity in an ecosystem (Anderson, et al., 2004), ease of capture, and sensitivity to changes in vegetative structure and quality (Hartley, et al., 2007). This study utilized five thinned and burned forested pine sites, five perennial cool-season food plots, and five …

Voting System Risk Assessment Via Computational Complexity Analysis, Dan S. Wallach
Voting System Risk Assessment Via Computational Complexity Analysis, Dan S. Wallach
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Any voting system must be designed to resist a variety of failures, ranging from inadvertent misconfiguration to intentional tampering. The problem with conducting analyses of these issues, particularly across widely divergent technologies, is that it is very difficult to make apples-to-apples comparisons. This paper considers the use of a standard technique used in the analysis of algorithms, namely complexity analysis with its "big-O" notation, which can provide a high-level abstraction that allows for direct comparisons across voting systems. We avoid the need for making unreliable estimates of the probability a system might be hacked or of the cost of bribing …

Machine Errors And Undervotes In Florida 2006 Revisited, Walter R. Mebane
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
The 2006 election for U.S. House of Representatives District 13 in Sarasota County, Florida, attracted extensive controversy because an unusually high proportion of the ballots cast lacked a vote for that office, and the unusual number of undervotes probably changed the election outcome. Intensive technical studies based on examining software and hardware from the iVotronic touchscreen voting machines used to conduct the election failed to find mechanical flaws sufficient to explain the undervotes. Studies that examined the ballots used in Sarasota and in some other counties concluded the high undervote rate was caused by peculiar features of the ballot's format …

Borderline Personality Disorder: An Overview Of History, Diagnosis And Treatment In Adolescents, Linah Al-Alem, Hatim A. Omar
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a cluster B personality disorder. It is characterized by erratic behaviors, emotional instability and one of its hallmarks is self injurious behavior, which starts in adolescence. Patients with BPD are difficult to treat, most have a history of child sexual abuse, about a quarter present with sexual abuse from a caretaker. Although personality disorders are diagnosed only in adults, BPD manifests itself in adolescence in the form of uncontrollable anger, self mutilations, dissociation and other such behaviors. Hence, there is a growing number of scientists discussing the possibility of diagnosing BPD in adolescents. Here, we …
