We solve the Riemann problem for the deceleration of an arbitrarily magne-tized relativistic flow injected into a static unmagnetized medium in one dimen-sion. We find that for the same initial Lorentz factor, the reverse shock becomes progressively weaker with increasing magnetization σ (the Poynting-to-kinetic energy flux ratio), and the shock becomes a rarefaction wave when σ exceeds a critical value, σc, defined by the balance between the magnetic pressure in the flow and the thermal pressure in the forward shock. In the rarefaction wave regime, we find that the rarefied region is accelerated to a Lorentz factor that is significantly …

Always There, Todd & Stacie Plouffe Dec 2008

Always There, Todd & Stacie Plouffe

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"We live in a changing, complex world. We are a society that is on the go, a society that thinks more is always better, one in which technology continues to evolve. We dine out more; up to 50 percent of the money that we spend on food is spent dining out. Most families don’t have the classic home cooked meal where all family members eat at the same time. It seems like there is so much to do and so little time to do it."

Historical Legacy Of Jesuits In China, Lawrence Fouraker Dec 2008

Historical Legacy Of Jesuits In China, Lawrence Fouraker

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"What is the meaning today of the missionary activities of the Society of Jesus in China? The attempt by members of the Society of Jesus to convert Chinese to Christianity from the late-16th to early-18th centuries was part of the Catholic Reformation’s missionary expansion around the world. Was the Jesuit mission also part and parcel of an expansionist Western imperialism, or did it rather reflect a humanistic universalism?2 Obviously, there are some aspects of both, but on balance, the conversion of Chinese in this era is …

Intelligence Techniques Are Needed To Further Enhance The Advantage Of Groups With Diversity In Problem Solving, Oscar Castillo, Patricia Melin, J. Esteban Gamez, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva Dec 2008

Intelligence Techniques Are Needed To Further Enhance The Advantage Of Groups With Diversity In Problem Solving, Oscar Castillo, Patricia Melin, J. Esteban Gamez, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In practice, there are many examples when the diversity in a group enhances the group's ability to solve problems -- and thus, leads to more efficient groups, firms, schools, etc. Several papers, starting with the pioneering research by Scott E. Page from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, provide a theoretical justification for this known empirical phenomenon. However, when the general advise of increasing diversity is transformed into simple-to-follow algorithmic rules (like quotas), the result is not always successful. In this paper, we prove that the problem of designing the most efficient group is computationally difficult (NP-hard). Thus, in …

A Model To Use Denied Internet Traffic To Indirectly Discover Internal Network Security Problems, Chet Langin, Hongbo Zhou, Shahram Rahimi Dec 2008

A Model To Use Denied Internet Traffic To Indirectly Discover Internal Network Security Problems, Chet Langin, Hongbo Zhou, Shahram Rahimi

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We propose a model for using firewall log entries of denied inbound Internet traffic for indirect discovery of local IP addresses that have security problems. This method is used successfully to discover two computers on the network of Southern Illinois University which were infected with malicious feral software, as well as two more IP addresses on the university network with other security problems.

Analysis Of Leading Economic Indicator Data And Gross Domestic Product Data Using Neural Network Methods, Edward Tirados, John Jenq Dec 2008

Analysis Of Leading Economic Indicator Data And Gross Domestic Product Data Using Neural Network Methods, Edward Tirados, John Jenq

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this report, Leading Economic Indicator (LEI) data and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data have been analyzed to determine if changes in the ten indicators can be used to predict changes in GDP. Three neural network methods and one statistical method were used to complete the analysis. For this project, the intent was to use multiple regression and backpropagation to develop correlations in which LEI values are used to predict the GDP change in the following quarter. Alternatively, Kohonen's self-organizing map and hierarchical clustering were used to group months of LEI data into clusters to determine if months in a …

Introduction: Telling Places, Nicholas Beech

RIT Digital Archives

I don’t think it is desirable, or possible, in this introduction to a small selection of papers (four) from the conference Telling Places: Narrative and identity in art and architecture, to attempt a complete summary of its proceedings (which included twenty papers, including Davison 2008). Along with the paper presentations, the conference included an exhibition of work produced in the PhD programs at the Bartlett School of Architecture and the Slade School of Fine Art, curated by Christiana Ioannou, Christos Papastergiou, and Laura Cinti; a workshop (that included, most disconcertingly and significantly, actual singing by academics) provided by the artist …

What can be revealed if we open a process which is normally closed to view, exposing it to vulnerabilities and misinterpretation? To investigate the notion of hidden spaces we decided to treat the development of an abstract as a practical collaborative drawing project. Our aim was to use drawing as the site of an active research project and look at the relationship between processes of thinking and the state of drawing [Image 1]. Within this methodology it was our intention to use drawing as a process in which concepts are formed, where an idea is in constant flux, in a …

The Martian Rose (2007): Exposing A Rose To The Martian Environment, Laura Cinti, Howard Boland

RIT Digital Archives

Our cultural concept of Mars has historically been entrenched with its possibilities of life since Percival Lowell gazed at Giovanni Schiaparelli’s canali over a century ago. Perhaps a small misinterpretation of language, an optical illusion, or the dream of an optimist, unlocked the myth of a war torn planet where unrivalled irrigation skills implied markings of intelligent creatures (Lowell, 1909). With new discoveries and the development of technological tools, Mars has become reduced from inhabiting man-like creatures to worms, plants and gradually only the potentiality of microbes. Indeed, many scientists shared this disappointment as the Mariner orbiters first laid their …

The Architectural Public Sphere, Lea-Catherine Szacka Dec 2008

The Architectural Public Sphere, Lea-Catherine Szacka

RIT Digital Archives

In his 1962 book The Structural Transformation of Public Sphere, the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas described the emergence, transformation, and disintegration of the public sphere in the late eighteenth century and in the beginning of the nineteenth century in France, Germany and England. After giving a brief summery of Habermas’ theory on the public sphere, this paper will attempt to draw a parallel between these ideas (generally applied to literature, art and politics) and the development of the architectural exhibitions presented by the Venice Biennale between 1968 and 2006. In other words, this paper will aim to see whether there …

A Reliable Approach For Higher-Order Integro-Differential Equations, Muhammad A. Noor, Syed T. Mohyud-Din Dec 2008

A Reliable Approach For Higher-Order Integro-Differential Equations, Muhammad A. Noor, Syed T. Mohyud-Din

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we apply the variational iteration method (VIM) for solving higher-order integro differential equations by converting the problems into system of integral equations. The proposed technique is applied to the re-formulated system of integro-differential equations. Numerical results show the accuracy and efficiency of the suggested algorithm. The fact that the VIM solves nonlinear problems without calculating Adomian’s polynomials is a clear advantage of this technique over the decomposition method.
