Through continued development, the two-dimensional PAGE gel technique developed by O'Farrell in 1975 has emerged as the hallmark technology utilized in virtually all protein expression analyses. The principle objective of this study was the development and validation of a proteome analysis methodology using this technique suitable for use in determining the quantifiable proteome differences between prion containing [PSI+] and wild type [psi-] strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In addition to the development of an assay, which yields highly reproducible whole proteome isolates from both strains, was the elicitation of statistically significant proteome changes between the two strains. The main function of the cardiovascular system is to deliver a sufficient quantity of oxygenated blood to the tissues, cells, and organs of the body in order to provide the cells with essential nutrients for metabolism and for the removal of waste products. All cells require and utilize oxygen. Oxygen is transported to various cells and tissues via red blood cells flowing through the microcirculation of an organism. Measurement of oxygen transport in the microcirculation has shown that about ten times more oxygen appears to leave the blood of arterioles than can be accounted for by diffusion. The purpose of this study was to determine if youth and adult participants in the 4-H Environmental Impact program perceive youth-adult partnerships as an effective means to enhance the youths’ development of life skills. The study further sought to discover the perceived obstacles that may keep youth and adults from participating in equal partnerships. The life skills of: Leadership, Cooperation, Service Learning, and Planning and organizing were enhanced through the youths’ participation in the youth-adult partnership. Scan-Rescan And Intra-Observer Variability Of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Of Carotid Atherosclerosis At 1.5 T And 3.0 T, Arvin Vidal, Yves Bureau, Trevor Wade, J David Spence, Brian K Rutt, Aaron Fenster, Grace Parraga

Carotid atherosclerosis measurements for eight subjects at baseline and 14 +/- 2 days later were examined using 1.5 T and 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A single observer blinded to field strength, subject and timepoint manually segmented carotid artery wall and lumen boundaries in randomized images in five measurement trials. Mean increases in the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) for T1-weighted images acquired at 3.0 T compared to 1.5 T were 90% (scan) and 80% (rescan). Despite significantly improved SNR and contrast-to-noise ratios (CNR) for images acquired at 3.0 T, vessel wall volume (VWV) intra-observer variability was not significantly different using …

Computer Science Technical Reports

Anonymizing networks such as Tor allow users to access Internet services privately by using a series of routers to hide the client's IP address from the server. The success of such networks, however, has been limited by users employing this anonymity for abusive purposes such as defacing popular websites. Website administrators routinely rely on IP-address blocking for disabling access to misbehaving users, but blocking IP addresses is not practical if the abuser routes through an anonymizing network. As a result, administrators block \emph{all} known exit nodes of anonymizing networks, denying anonymous access to misbehaving and behaving users alike. To address …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Motivated by the hinge structure present in protein chains and other molecular conformations, we study the singularities of certain maps associated to body-and-hinge and panel-and-hinge chains. These are sequentially articulated systems where two consecutive rigid pieces are connected by a hinge, that is, a codimension two axis. The singularities, or critical points, correspond to a dimensional drop in the linear span of the axes, regarded as points on a Grassmann variety in its Pl¨ucker embedding. These results are valid in arbitrary dimension. The three dimensional case is also relevant in robotics.

Giardia infection has been found in a wide range of hosts including human, domestic, and wild animals. Dogs are the definitive host of G.duodenalis, which can cause diarrhea and other symptoms. Although zoonotic transmission of Giardia remains unclear, epidemiologic evidence suggests that some Giardia species are zoonotic. Additionally, Giardia has been associated with epidemics in the US and other countries making it one of the most important public health concerns. Prevalence of Giardia among dogs in the United States ranged from 10% in well-treated dogs to 30-50% in puppies and up to 100% in breeding kennels. However, prevalence of Giardia …

We study body-and-hinge and panel-and-hinge chains in R^d , with two marked points: one on the first body, the other on the last. For a general chain, the squared distance between the marked points gives a Morse-Bott function on a torus configuration space. Maximal configurations, when the distance between the two marked points reaches a global maximum, have particularly simple geometrical characterizations. The three-dimensional case is relevant for applications to robotics and molecular structures.

Attrition In Adolescent After-School Programs: Addressing The Concern Via Interviews With Program Dropouts, Lynda Okeke

Journal of Youth Development

The purpose of this paper is to address the challenges of attrition in adolescent, voluntary after-school programs (ASPs). Studies show that the after-school hours are a time of elevated juvenile delinquency. Since 1998 there has been a surge in the number of ASPs throughout the United States. Despite this surge, attrition is a major concern and threat to ASPs. Moreover, youth who drop out are rarely asked about their reasons for not attending. Seventy middle school-aged individuals who were selected to participate in the Baltimore County Middle School After-School Collaboration Project (BCAP) but eventually dropped out are interviewed for this …

The drug promethazine hydrochloride (PRZH) forms with rhodium (II) a colored chelate (λmax = 472 nm) complex at (pH = 2.1) which is extractable with benzyl alcohol as organic solvent. Under the appropriate experimental conditions a calibration plot was set up from which some analytical parameter were derived and deduced by regression. Standard addition procedure was also adopted. It has been estimated that the concentration of the drug PRZH to be 24.89 mg per unit and 24.19 mg per unit for both calibrations.
