Rule-based deduplication utilizes expert domain knowledge to identify and remove duplicate data records. Achieving high accuracy in a rule-based system requires the creation of rules containing a good combination of discriminatory clues. Unfortunately, accurate rule-based deduplication often requires significant manual tuning of both the rules and the corresponding thresholds. This need for manual tuning reduces the efficacy of rule-based deduplication and its applicability to real-world data sets. No adequate solution exists for this problem. We propose a novel technique for rule-based deduplication. We apply individual deduplication rules, and combine the resultant match scores via learning-based information fusion. We show empirically …

Since its inception in the 1950s, operations research has been used in a number of industries, including the energy industry. Documentation of its use in exploration, production, gasoline blending, oil spill management, coal mining, coal handling, and coal mixing is extensive. However, considerably less documented research exists for one significant customer of many of these products: the electric utility. This work reviews refereed literature from United States operations research journals that document the use of operations research in United States electric utility operations. Academic researchers and marketing practitioners are exploring methods to improve salesperson training. Recently, self-directed learning projects were proposed as a new paradigm for learning to take place in the sales domain (Artis & Harris, 2007). Current conceptual work provides a strong foundation for understanding salesperson self-directed learning; however, prior to quantitatively testing proposed models, scales must be created and modified to address salesperson specific learning endeavors. Examining The Potential Unintended Effects Of A Healthful Living Curriculum Upon Children’S Weight-Related Beliefs, Body Satisfaction, And Body Build Stereotypes, Jennifer Paff Ogle, Jan Carroll, Brian Butki, Mary Lynn Damhorst

This exploratory work was guided by the question of whether health education messages about food and exercise might inadvertently influence children’s beliefs about weight controllability, body satisfaction, weight self-assessments, desire to alter weight, and body build stereotypes. Participants were 80 children (38 boys, 42 girls) aged 7 to 13 years enrolled in a week-long “FunLIFE” summer camp offered at a large university. FunLIFE was created in response to the childhood obesity crisis and focuses upon Learning to Improve Fitness and Eating (thus, the acronym “LIFE”). Decision Tree Ensemble: Small Heterogeneous Is Better Than Large Homogeneous, Mike Gashler, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez

Using decision trees that split on randomly selected attributes is one way to increase the diversity within an ensemble of decision trees. Another approach increases diversity by combining multiple tree algorithms. The random forest approach has become popular because it is simple and yields good results with common datasets. We present a technique that combines heterogeneous tree algorithms and contrast it with homogeneous forest algorithms. Our results indicate that random forests do poorly when faced with irrelevant attributes, while our heterogeneous technique handles them robustly. Further, we show that large ensembles of random trees are more susceptible to diminishing returns …

Citation Analysis Of Theses In Library And Information Science Submitted To University Of Pune: A Pilot Study, R.V. Chikate, S.K. Patil
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This is a bibliometric study that used 27 LIS dissertations with a total of 6,257 citations. Most citations are from periodicals (42.2%), mostly from US and Indian journals. Nearly half of the citations recorded are from journal articles: 2,639 (42.2%) Nearly three quarters of the journal articles were from LIS journals, with the remainder from 33 other subject areas. College and Research Libraries is the most cited journal, followed by Scientometrics. Most of the citations are from 55 journals out of the total number.

This paper explores the idea that distributive justice in the multilateral trade regime is best served, at the moment, by democratizing its governance procedures. Part I of this paper focuses on the explanatory question - from a trade and development perspective, how can we understand the breakdown in Doha negotiations? This paper draws attention to institutional dynamics exacerbating the current stalemate. In answering that question, Part I draws from two disparate methodological traditions, which can be described as "economistic" and "constructivist." Constructivist analysis suggests a focus on the discursive subtexts that constitute the identity and interests of participating states. With …
