Once the unruly upstart, John Zorn is now a MacArthur fellow, whose formidable catalog divides easily into early, middle, and late periods. The early period dates from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, when Zorn pioneered the practice of "comprovisation," a term used to describe "the making of new compositions from recordings of improvised material." Ultimately, Zorn's comprovisation blurs the lines between active listener and composer, since both create new works when they impose structure on found sonic material. His early structuralist-modernist approach to comprovisation produced esoteric, often severely pointillist music, and evolved into the game pieces of the late 1970s …

As current scholarship has begun to revisit African American theater, there has been an important rediscovery of certain women playwrights of the Harlem Renaissance. Coinciding with this rediscovery has been a tendency, however, to retain the often confusing and oppressive label that has haunted their plays and kept them from serious scholarly attention. Evoking categorizations like "folk drama" and "propaganda plays" oversimplifies the complexities of the terms themselves as well as what the individual women were doing in their writing. The thesis proposed for my M.F.A in creative writing is a collection of vignette-length short stories with each story intended to be a self-standing narrative. Each short story in this collection will be dissimilar in narrative structure and contain characters of various age, gender, ethnicity, and geographies which do not intermix with the other stories. However, language style, mood, and tone will subtly overlap to provide glue, suggesting a kaleidoscopic whole. Thematically, the stories deal with a pattern of threshold moments: coming to terms with disillusionment, substance addiction, death, moral ambiguity, and futility.

The success of the music therapy profession has been well established, though the healing properties of music are not yet fully understood. Clinical observations show the medicinal value of music therapy; however, it is challenging to quantify music's beneficial effects. Examining music therapy's effectiveness in treating neurological disorders can possibly help to better validate this profession. However, music therapy is a multidisciplinary field, and perhaps we must come to a better understanding of how the various disciplines relate to one another. Ultra-Wide band (UWB) systems are a new wireless technology capable of transmitting data over a wide spectrum of frequency bands with very low power and high data rates. This technology has the potential to replace almost every cable at home or in an office with a wireless connection. In a UWB receiver, a radio frequency (RF) low noise amplifier (LNA) is one of the most important components. For many gay men performing a gay-centric identity can be challenging. By adopting a set of expected behaviors known as the gay cultural script, many of these men are potentially met with discrimination from both heterosexual and homosexual communities. The gay cultural script is readily available as it is found within the gay ghettos and through various representations of gay men in the media. This short story collection is a meditation on happenstance and circumstance as played out in each character's life often catalyzed through the introduction of an unknown element: whether that element be a new character, perspective, or knowledge. Stylistically, the voice of the narration is colorful and humorous though the subject matter may be of the melancholic or macabre variety. The point of view changes from first to third, depending on the story and main character; however, the unifying factors of this collection is that each character is changed because of a loss, whether metaphoric or literal.

La Satire Comme Critique Sociale Chez Balzac, Galina Paramonova

As one of the founders of the realist novel, Balzac is praised for having invented returning characters and interwoven chronologies that serve to challenge the decadent social mores of his time, but critical discussions of Balzacs's work continue to neglect his use of satire in social criticism. Different modes of satire occure in his LePere Goriot (1835), Le Bat de Sceaux (1829), Gobseck (1830), La Maison Nucingen (1837), Le Depute dArcis (1847), and La Femme abandonnee (1822), which together attest that Balzac achieves his ambition to become both the Rabelais and the Moliere of his era.

Gender Stereotypes In Spanish Language Television Programming For Children In The United States, Carlo Andre Romo

Children's television programming falling within the traditional Saturday morning time slot for four continuous Saturdays on five Spanish language networks in a southwest border city in the United States constituted the sample for this study. Each of the programs in the study was broken down and analyzed for character demographics, character behaviors and consequences received for those behaviors. Eight categories of behavior were scored, including four traditionally male behaviors (aggression, autonomy, construction, dominance) and four traditionally female behaviors (deference, dependence, harm avoidance, nurturing). The analysis of demographic data revealed male characters clearly outnumbered female characters and female characters were significantly …

Section 524(g) of the Bankruptcy Code was adopted to protect unknown future asbestos personal injury victims' rights and prospects for financial recovery. To serve these goals and satisfy the demands of due process, Section 524(g) provides two basic forms of virtual representation for future victims - requiring the appointment of an independent legal representative and aligning the interests of future victims with current claimants (75% of whom must approve any plan that invokes Section 524(g)). This dissertation will contribute to the project of explaining what environmental communication studies may offer theoretically to an understanding of communication and rhetoric in general, investigate a complex problem in rhetoric from a variety of methodological approaches, offer examples of rhetorical criticism relevant to environmental communication researchers, and delve into certain salient aspects of ecological rhetoric (defined herein as rhetoric from an ecological perspective). This dissertation offers a rhetorical analysis of the formation of women’s memory, history, and communities in intersections of musical and literary expression in the American South, a region graced with a vital but underexamined tradition of female musicianship. Recent scholars have deconstructed the imagined narrative of southern culture as static, patriarchal, and white to uncover alternative stories and cultures that exist outside of canonical literature. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of explicit fluency-building strategies on the oral reading rates of first-grade students. According to the National Reading Panel (2000) there are five essential components of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. All components are needed to achieve the complex skill of reading. Due to the reciprocal nature of these skills pertaining to reading, a deficit in any reading component can cause difficulties in learning to read (O'Connor, 2007). From The Mountains To The Podium: The Rhetoric Of Fidel Castro, Brent C. Kice

This dissertation examines the rhetoric utilized by Fidel Castro that Castro used in order to maintain his tenure as the sole leader of Cuba for almost 50 years. Castro employs identification through division with an enemy, and he is able to perpetuate this division through an ongoing, dynamically perceived narrative. This narrative takes shape in the form of “the revolution,” a rhetorical construction designed to create a collective Cuban identity, which, in turn, is furthered through ideology by Castro’s elimination of competing points of views.
