Teaching Washington State History Through The Arts: A Curricular Guide, Rebekah Norgard Jan 2008

Teaching Washington State History Through The Arts: A Curricular Guide, Rebekah Norgard

All Graduate Projects

Students benefit both academically and nonacademically when a core subject is taught through the arts. The arts allow students to develop cognitively, extend their research skills, define their ability to problem solve, and strengthen their self-image. Personal connections and student attentiveness is increased when classes incorporate the study of the arts. The purpose of this project was to encourage the integration of arts into core subjects and provide a framework and examples of effective arts content infusion as an instructional strategy for use by Washington State History teachers.

The Ouroboros Father Project, William L. Betz

Theses and Dissertations

The Ouroboros Father Project is an exploration the author's relationship with his dead father, the authors' reaction to his father's death and the author's dealing with the aftermath of his father's legacy as a child molester. The complex story of this relationship and the author's exploration of his own feelings is told in several different genres. This relationship is told in three poems, an essay, and, finally, a four act play and each piece centers around the ancient symbol of the ouroboros. In Search Of Female Space : Resistance And Creation In Tsitsi Dangarembga’S Nervous Conditions And She No Longer Weeps, Diana Mckenna Jan 2008

In Search Of Female Space : Resistance And Creation In Tsitsi Dangarembga’S Nervous Conditions And She No Longer Weeps, Diana Mckenna

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In this paper I explore how with Nervous Conditions (1988) and She No Longer Weeps (1987), Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga creates alternative literary forms in her representation of architectural, bodily and narrative spaces and their relationship to female identities. These physical spaces the women characters inhabit, resist and in which they assert their voices must be cleared of patriarchal control in order for female-centered space to be produced. Moreover, the creation of a new speech paradigm, one that affirms the female voice, is crucial to the journey towards female autonomy. Inasmuch as Dangarembga explores the ways in which physical spaces …

The Effects Of Financial Aid Amounts On Academic Performance, Lane Coonrod '08

The Park Place Economist

Much research has been done investigating the impact of various forms of financial aid on college entry, eventual college graduation, and future earnings, yet little if any literature has explored the possibility of the presence of unintended academic outcomes—both positive or negative. This study looks to focus on one specific possible externality—financial aid’s impact on academic performance.

Highlighting Marital Hiv Risk And Promoting Premarital Vct In Nyanza Province, Kenya, Ben Ochieng, Annabel Erulkar

Reproductive Health

This report describes a project undertaken in Kenya by the Population Council, in collaboration with PATH and Kendu Adventist Hospital, whose objectives were: 1) to design and implement educational strategies to raise awareness of the risks of HIV and early marriage; 2) to promote voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for couples; and 3) to support and empower newly married girls through community-based clubs. The report notes that the strong technical support and leadership provided by the partners led to successful implementation of most project activities. The partnership enabled scarce resources to be shared, and has ensured that the comparative advantages …

Faculty Publications

Opportunities for more creative and innovative environments for learners continue to develop through distance education. Especially at the post-secondary level, these immersive environments can involve high-end video game technologies to create multi-user virtual worlds that can both replicate and far extend physical classrooms. At San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science, courses offered in and through Second Life develop both competence and comfort in working with library users. Several useful lessons have also been learned.
