The Places You'll Go, and many others. All of these stories are given an intertwining story line, with Horton serving as the protagonist. Evoking Desire…And Irreverence: A Collection Of Women Writing Women, Women Writing Women Collective

Publications

We draw from the diverse life experiences of women who have supported their academic and life journeys through membership in the Women Writing Women (WWW) collective. We come from diverse backgrounds in curriculum, new media studies, drama, english, art, science, creative writing, elementary, secondary, higher and adult education, and bring these multiple perspectives to our monthly dialogues. We explore how writing can evoke desire, longing, fear, reverence, irreverence, joy and awe rather than merely represent. The community offers an emergent space for these deeply personal, yet public explorations into meaning‐making. We share personal stories, perform writing, dialogue on the evolution …

Maverick Mothers And Mercy Flights: Canada’S Controversial Introduction To International Adoption, Tarah Brookfield Jan 2008

Maverick Mothers And Mercy Flights: Canada’S Controversial Introduction To International Adoption, Tarah Brookfield

Youth and Children's Studies

In the 1970s, two private adoption agencies faced state and public scrutiny over their ‘rescue’ of orphans from Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia. The organizations were run by four Canadian mothers who themselves adopted over fifty children and placed hundreds more with other Canadian families. Inspired by a sense of maternal internationalism, these ‘maverick mothers’ were convinced that removing the children from their war torn nations and bringing them to Canada was in each child’s best interest. According to professional social workers and diplomats, a strong commitment to maternalism and internationalism were not valid enough to trust the complicated operation of …

Calling Dick Tracy! Or, Cellphone Use, Progress, And A Racial Paradigm, Judith A. Nicholson Jan 2008

Calling Dick Tracy! Or, Cellphone Use, Progress, And A Racial Paradigm, Judith A. Nicholson

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The hero and phone-watch from Dick Tracy are evoked regularly in news and studies of cellphone use. This paper argues that the racial paradigm of White law enforcer and Dark law-breaker in the comic strip resonates in contemporary evocations and in discussions of cellphone use and crime. Representations of mobile communication and racialized criminality in Dick Tracy were inspired by the 1930s “war on crime” that intersected with wireless innovations and with lynching. This paper interprets that repeated evocation of the comic strip is a “perverse nostalgia” for an old-fashioned form of law and order premised on racialized violence and …

Prince Of Haiti/King Of Paris: The Research, The Creative Process And The Script, Kyle Siebrecht Jan 2008

Prince Of Haiti/King Of Paris: The Research, The Creative Process And The Script, Kyle Siebrecht

Open Access Theses

Prince of Haiti/King of Paris is an original theatre piece containing eighteenth-century period recreations of the music, dance, opera and ritual on the French colonial island of Saint-Domingue, now Haiti. The reconstructions, several of which have not heretofore been attempted, include the French Baroque style, African heritage, and styles including both of these influences. They are based on the descriptive writings of Moreau de Saint-Méry (Martinique 1750 Paris 1819). The script centers on the life of this noted French Caribbean jurist and journal writer, who found himself at the helm of the French Revolution on Bastille Day, and at the …

Representing Work: What The Office Teaches Us About Creativity And The Organization, Kevin Craft Jan 2008

Representing Work: What The Office Teaches Us About Creativity And The Organization, Kevin Craft

Open Access Theses

NBC's situation comedy The Office reflects on the nature of workplace management in the 21st century. The show critiques a corporation that values conformity over individuality, while implying that promoting "creative" employees to upper management is not credible alternative. The Office does this by focusing on Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell), a character whose unique creative working style makes him a great salesman but a poor manager. Michael?s character stands in contrast to Ryan Howard (played by B.J. Novak), who differs from Michael both in his approach to business and his success at it. The Office implies that creativity …

Francois Valentijn's Oud En Nieuw Oost Indien And The Dutch Frontispiece In The 17th And 18th Centuries, Maria S. Labarge

Open Access Theses

In this thesis I analyze the Dutch frontispiece to Francois Valentijn's 1726 book Oud en Nieuw Oost Indien and demonstrate that it is a significant artistic statement, original in its rich and imaginative iconography and emblematic program. I describe and explain the image and its iconographic program and emblematic structure. I compare the frontispiece to many other Dutch frontispieces and artworks that likewise feature the four continent allegories and other iconographic elements. I demonstrate the ways in which the frontispiece superbly and comprehensively summarizes and visualizes the text, which is the primary purpose of frontispieces. I also show how the …

Creativity Research In Music Education: A Review (1980-2005), Donald J. Running Jan 2008

Creativity Research In Music Education: A Review (1980-2005), Donald J. Running

Music Faculty Publications

This article lays a foundational groundwork of what is currently known regarding creativity and music education to encourage future research. It explores principal research avenues within various scholarly journals related to creativity and music education, including definitions of creativity, empirical measures of creativity, and effects of music instruction on general creativity scores. Definitions (and, consequently, assessments) of creativity fall into three general categories: product based, process based, and performance based. These definitions have generated a number of new theories and tests designed to assess the creativity of products and individuals.
