An Educational Initiative To Promote Evidence-Based Practice, Laurel Ann Ecoff Phd, Ms, Rn, Nea-Bc

Dissertations

Evidence-based practice (EBP), recognized as essential in providing quality patient care and achieving optimal outcomes, is the integration of the best research evidence, patient preference, and clinician expertise. Healthcare providers must attain expertise in integrating EBP into the clinical setting. Fellowships are one strategy reported in the literature to assist nurses in acquiring needed knowledge and skills for evidence-based care. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention, the Evidence-Based Practice Institute (EPBI), to teach nurses the process of EBP for project implementation to improve nursing and patient outcomes. This descriptive study used a …

Contact With Nature, Sense Of Humor, And Psychological Well-Being, Thomas R. Herzog, Sarah J. Strevey Nov 2008

Contact With Nature, Sense Of Humor, And Psychological Well-Being, Thomas R. Herzog, Sarah J. Strevey

Peer Reviewed Articles

We administered a questionnaire measuring contact with nature, sense of humor, and psychological well-being. Factor analysis of the humor items yielded four factors: humor production, humor appreciation, coping humor, and humor tolerance. Factor analysis of 14 well-being measures yielded three factors: emotional well-being, personal development, and effective functioning. The best sense-of-humor predictor of the well-being measures and factors was humor appreciation. Regression models for each of the well-being factors as dependent variables with humor appreciation and contact with nature as independent variables showed that additive models with both predictors were appropriate for personal development and effective functioning and that a …

Communication Strategies Of Successful Coaches: A Content Analysis Of Books By Coaches About Coaching, Fredyne Yust Nov 2008

Communication Strategies Of Successful Coaches: A Content Analysis Of Books By Coaches About Coaching, Fredyne Yust

Theses

Communication behaviors of coaches are critical in motivating athletes and creating a climate of success. Coaches learn their techniques from a variety of sources—mentors, education, and lessons learned from other coaches. For this study, university coaches were surveyed to determine five books written by successful coaches: The Smart Take from the Strong (Pete Carril), Sacred Hoops (Phil Jackson), Leading with the Heart (Mike Krzyzewski), Reach for the Summit (Pat Summitt) and They Call Me Coach (John Wooden). Using grounded theory, the researcher analyzed these texts and discovered discernible categories of communication techniques deemed significant to the process of successful coaching. …

The Revitalization Of Older Industrial Cities: A Review Essay Of Retooling For Growth, Timothy J. Bartik Nov 2008

The Revitalization Of Older Industrial Cities: A Review Essay Of Retooling For Growth, Timothy J. Bartik

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This review essay debates the policy issues raised by the book Retooling for Growth: Building a 21st Century Economy in America's Older Industrial Areas, edited by Richard M. McGahey and Jennifer S. Vey (Brookings Institution Press, 2008). I argue that the main rationale for adopting policies to revitalize older industrial cities is to improve the per capita earnings of urban residents. Therefore, urban economic development policy should be seen as urban labor market policy. Increasing city residents' earnings requires progress on two fronts: increasing metropolitan labor demand; increasing the quantity and quality of the effective labor supply of city residents …

The Urgent Reawakening Of The Assyrian Question In An Emerging Iraqi Federalism: The Self-Determination Of The Assyrian People, Paul A. Isaac Nov 2008

The Urgent Reawakening Of The Assyrian Question In An Emerging Iraqi Federalism: The Self-Determination Of The Assyrian People, Paul A. Isaac

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article introduces the contemporary significance of the Assyrian Question--the longstanding inquiry over the rights of a small religious and ethnic minority in Iraq. Recently, Assyrians have been violently targeted and disproportionately driven from postwar Iraq in massive numbers, threatening to obliterate their presence from their ancestral homeland forever. Addressing their legal rights, the author argues that Assyrians are an indigenous people under international law and are, therefore, entitled to the full exercise of their political, social, and cultural self-determination. The article surveys the international law of self-determination alongside provisions of Iraqi law that have been created to protect Assyrians. …

Aquatic Perceived Competence Analysis In Children: Development And Preliminary Validation Of A Pictorial Scale, Juan Antonio Moreno Murcia, Luis Miguel Ruiz Pérez

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of this study was to develop and validate a scale for measuring perceived motor of children in the water (also known as aquatic perceived competence). One hundred boys and girls four and five years old took part in the study and were given a picture questionnaire featuring a series of images of children engaged in a variety of water tasks. Factor analyses were conducted to test whether the ten-item scale is made up of two major dimensions, the first of them referring to willingness (predisposition or attitudes of the children towards water) and the second to the perceived …

Centralized College Client Database Creation From Diverse Interrelated Sources, George Hogan Nov 2008

Centralized College Client Database Creation From Diverse Interrelated Sources, George Hogan

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

This "Centralized College Client Database Creation from Diverse Interrelated Sources" project was undertaken as a solution for a requirement that exists for the college that I am employed. This requirement was to provide a complete (technology asset wise) profile of college employees, administrative and faculty, which I have called "clients". This is due to the fact that they are clients for the services of the Information Technology Department, for which this system was designed. The main problem to address is that there is no concise information readily available to the Help Desk and Technical Support areas, for which I am …

The Persistence Of Sleep Disturbance In Children Evaluated For Autism Spectrum Disorders: Predictive Factors And The Impact Of Co-Occurring Diagnoses, Celeste Elana Flachsbart Nov 2008

The Persistence Of Sleep Disturbance In Children Evaluated For Autism Spectrum Disorders: Predictive Factors And The Impact Of Co-Occurring Diagnoses, Celeste Elana Flachsbart

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Mounting research suggests that children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and other clinical diagnoses demonstrate a higher prevalence of sleep problems than typically-developing children. Additionally, sleep problems are related to a number of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral concerns in pediatric populations. Limited research exists comparing sleep problems in children with ASDs with sleep problems in other clinical populations, or exploring the length of these sleep problems.

The current study sought to explore the development and improvement of sleep problems over one year, as well as predictors to help identify children at high risk for persistent sleep problem. Impact of age, …

Breast Cancer Fatalism: The Role Of Women's Perceptions Of The Health Care System, Allyson G. Hall, Amal J. Khoury, Ellen D.S. Lopez, Nedra Lisovicz, Amanda Avis-Williams, Amal K. Mitra

Faculty Publications

Cancer fatalism, which can be understood as the belief that cancer is a death sentence, has been found to be a deterrent to preventive cancer screening participation. This study examines factors associated with breast cancer fatalism among women. We analyzed data from a 2003 survey of women 40 years of age. The survey collected information about respondents' knowledge and attitudes regarding breast health. Analyses compared the characteristics of women who reported and those who did not report a fatalistic attitude. Women with a fatalistic attitude were more likely to be African American, to have a family history of breast cancer, …

Compelling Intimacies: Domesticity, Sexuality, And Agency, Aaron Goodfellow, Sameena A. Mulla Nov 2008

Compelling Intimacies: Domesticity, Sexuality, And Agency, Aaron Goodfellow, Sameena A. Mulla

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This introduction highlights what we call "Compelling Intimacies"—the multiple desires, affects, and affinities that arise at the intersection of institutions, actors, technologies, and ethical discourses to exert persuasive pressures on subjects. Each article animates different facets of the intensities born of intimacy as they operate across social and relational fields. The authors separate agency from intention in their efforts to identify the vitality of human and non-human relations. Together, the articles demonstrate how domesticities arise through diverse sets of circumstances, emerging in multiple incarnations—often in the same household—in such a way as to generate a wide range of affects and …

Technology Acceptance Factors Affecting Adoption Of Wireless Data Technology, Igal Hebron Nov 2008

Technology Acceptance Factors Affecting Adoption Of Wireless Data Technology, Igal Hebron

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The study of acceptance and use of technology is traditionally based on models designed to identify and test the relationships forged between the user and the technology in question. Models designed to study the relationship of user and technology acceptance tend to integrate experiential criteria, such as the attitude of the user towards technology, as well as criteria found within the environment. As wireless communications become more prevalent, and the forms of wireless technology evolve, understanding the process of acceptance and usage will be of importance as companies compete to offer the most user friendly and sophisticated wireless devices.

Lessons Of Abu Ghraib: Understanding And Preventing Prisoner Abuse In Military Operations, Paul T. Bartone Nov 2008

Lessons Of Abu Ghraib: Understanding And Preventing Prisoner Abuse In Military Operations, Paul T. Bartone

Defense Horizons

The abuse of prisoners by U.S. Soldiers at Abu Ghraib had broad strategic consequences, leading many people around the world to question the legitimacy of U.S. goals and activities in Iraq. This paper draws on extensive unclassified reports from multiple investigations that followed Abu Ghraib, and applies key psychological as well as social-situational perspectives to develop a better grasp of the causative factors. From a psychological standpoint, most young adults are powerfully inclined to behave in accord with the social conventions and pressures around them. Especially in ambiguous circumstances, then, it is important that standards of behavior be clear and …

Perceptions Of Selected Athletic Directors In The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Region Regarding Factors And Issues Of Ethics In Interscholastic Athletics, Rodney W. Bussey

Faculty Works

Interscholastic athletic directors have a tremendous responsibility in guiding athletic programs in today’s ever-changing society. Their decisions on the numerous issues confronting them reflect what they perceive as ethical (Conn & Gerdes, 1998). The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions of selected athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex regarding the issues and factors related to the ethical conduct of personnel involved in the directing of interscholastic athletic programs. To accomplish this, the researcher collected qualitative data from eight athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex who are responsible for at least three interscholastic athletic programs that …

A Method To Quantify Residents' Jargon Use During Counseling Of Standardized Patients About Cancer Screening, Lindsay Deuster, Stephanie Christopher, Jodi Donovan, Michael Farrell Nov 2008

A Method To Quantify Residents' Jargon Use During Counseling Of Standardized Patients About Cancer Screening, Lindsay Deuster, Stephanie Christopher, Jodi Donovan, Michael Farrell

College of Professional Studies Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Jargon is a barrier to effective patient-physician communication, especially when health literacy is low or the topic is complicated. Jargon is addressed by medical schools and residency programs, but reducing jargon usage by the many physicians already in practice may require the population-scale methods used in Quality Improvement.

Objective

To assess the amount of jargon used and explained during discussions about prostate or breast cancer screening. Effective communication is recommended before screening for prostate or breast cancer because of the large number of false-positive results and the possible complications from evaluation or treatment.

Participants

Primary care internal medicine residents. …

Building-Level School Administrators' Perceptions Of Cyber Bullying , Among Students Under Their Supervision: Implications For Prevention And Intervention, James P. Colt Nov 2008

Building-Level School Administrators' Perceptions Of Cyber Bullying , Among Students Under Their Supervision: Implications For Prevention And Intervention, James P. Colt

Education Doctoral

Research has indicated that both technology use and cyber bullying behavior by teenagers are increasing. Despite the importance of the role of building-level school administrators in establishing climate and addressing violence, the research on cyber bullying to date has not included the perceptions of building-level school administrators. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of building-level school administrators about cyber bullying, the factors that influenced their response to cyber bullying, and the measures they and their schools are taking in regard to prevention and intervention of cyber bullying. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixedmethods strategy, which …

The Morality Of Immigration Policy, Peter H. Schuck Nov 2008

The Morality Of Immigration Policy, Peter H. Schuck

San Diego Law Review

In Part I, I discuss five kinds of deontological arguments that a moralist might advance in debating the ideal nature of our immigration policy. In Part II, I take a more instrumentalist-consequentialist approach to immigration policy analysis. Before doing so, however, I briefly note some of the familiar methodological and cognitive limitations of applying this approach to complex public policy issues of this kind, limitations that remind us of the irreducible importance of normative considerations and judgments to such policy assessments. I then go on to identify the three main sets of empirical controversies that figure most prominently in immigration …

Brain Drain, Fernando R. Teson Nov 2008

Brain Drain, Fernando R. Teson

San Diego Law Review

This Article argues against this conventional view. Most of the time there is nothing unfair about the brain drain, whether one considers it from the standpoint of the emigrant, the source country, or the host country. Critics of the brain drain make problematic empirical and philosophical claims. The empirical assumption of the critics, that the brain drain invariably hurts developing countries, is controversial. While a number of authorities endorse the conventional view that the brain drain hurts source countries, a contrarian literature suggests that the brain drain may help those left behind - that there is, in fact, a brain …

An Expanded Conceptualization And A New Measure Of Compulsive Buying, Nancy Ridgway, Monika Kukar-Kinney, Kent B. Monroe Nov 2008

An Expanded Conceptualization And A New Measure Of Compulsive Buying, Nancy Ridgway, Monika Kukar-Kinney, Kent B. Monroe

Marketing Faculty Publications

Drawing on the theoretical foundation of obsessive‐compulsive spectrum disorder, this article develops an expanded conceptualization and new measure of consumers’ proclivity to buy compulsively. Compulsive buying is defined as a consumer’s tendency to be preoccupied with buying that is revealed through repetitive buying and a lack of impulse control over buying. This measure includes dimensions of both obsessive‐compulsive and impulse‐control disorders. By measuring income‐dependent items or consequences of compulsive buying separately from the compulsive‐buying scale, we develop a measure that has a strong theoretical foundation, well‐documented psychometric properties, and an ability to be applied to general consumer populations.

Does The Type Of Crime Determine If An Image Of A Certain Criminal Is Pictured?, Amanda Vance Nov 2008

Does The Type Of Crime Determine If An Image Of A Certain Criminal Is Pictured?, Amanda Vance

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

People have culturally been inclined to visualize a perpetrator simply based on the description of the crime. This experiment seeks to determine if a generalized criminal is expressed by the survey group for each crime. Simply put, it will identify if there exists a similar stereotype for each crime described. Each participant completed a questionnaire to identify their demographics. Next was given five crimes which were about robbery, shooting, rape, stolen identity, and murder to read over with the victim and location information omitted. Participants were asked to visualize and describe the perpetrator in each crime scene. The results concluded …
