Simulation Modeling Of Karst Aquifer Conduit Evolution And Relations To Climate, John D. Broome Dec 2008

Simulation Modeling Of Karst Aquifer Conduit Evolution And Relations To Climate, John D. Broome

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

ABSTRACT Karst regions of the world that receive relatively similar amounts of precipitation display a wide variety of landscapes. It has been suggested (Groves and Meiman, 2005) that climates exhibiting larger discrete storm events have more dissolving power and consequently higher rates of conduit growth than climates with more uniform precipitation distributions. To study this concept, a computer program “Cave Growth” was developed that modeled the growth of a cross-section of a cave passage under dynamic flow and chemical conditions. A series of 46 simulation datasets were created to represent different climatic conditions. These simulations had the same total annual …

The Physical Discrimination And Possible Concept Of Object Weight That Exists In Infants And Toddlers, Anita Patnaik Dec 2008

The Physical Discrimination And Possible Concept Of Object Weight That Exists In Infants And Toddlers, Anita Patnaik

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Young children’s attention to a variety of object features has been studied. However, very few studies have examined young children’s understanding of object weight. In order to investigate developmental changes in perception and categorization of weight, three tasks were given to 59 18-month-old to 3-year-old children. Three age groups (20; 27 and 34 months old) were analyzed for the final results. The first two tasks used a familiarization and novelty preference paradigm in which attention was assessed by measuring each child’s looking time.

The first task’s goal was to evaluate young children’s ability to discriminate objects on the basis of …

Una Cartografía Interior: El Espacio Geográfico Y Las Distancias En La Novela Ucrania, Jett Mickey Dec 2008

Una Cartografía Interior: El Espacio Geográfico Y Las Distancias En La Novela Ucrania, Jett Mickey

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

In my essay titled, Una cartografía interior: El espacio geográfico y las distancias en la novela Ucrania, I explore the way the author, Pablo Aranda, uses a geographical discourse to create a metaphor for the interior self. I also show how he ruptures and collapses different forms of distance, be it geographical, emotional, or temporal throughout the book in an effort to connect not only the characters, but also the reader to the book as well. The first part of my essay looks at the means of communication in the novel, and how they are bridges of geographical space. I …

Bourdieu And American Legal Education: How Law Schools Reproduce Social Stratification And Class Hierarchy, Lucille A. Jewel Dec 2008

Bourdieu And American Legal Education: How Law Schools Reproduce Social Stratification And Class Hierarchy, Lucille A. Jewel

Scholarly Works

The American legal profession has long been organized along hierarchical lines, and in many instances, status inequalities between attorneys are based on perceived differences in attorneys' educational credentials. Relying upon the theories of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, this essay will discuss how American legal educational institutions operate to reproduce the stratification within the legal profession and within society as a whole.

American law schools are not equalizing institutions that erase all class differences among students to create a profession that awards all of its members a monolithic class status. By allocating professional status based on a system of educational tiers, …

Efficacy Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine On Perceived Well-Being In Geriatric Long-Term Care Residents, Shannon L. Baer

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Non-conventional therapies have been termed and captured by the phrase Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), since the establishment of The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), by the Federal Government in 1992. With the use of CAM on the rise in the baby boom population and the expectation that the number of nursing home residents is expected to double by 2020, it is imperative that healthcare providers gain more knowledge in effective means for treating the geriatric population holistically. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the implementation of a CAM intervention program in a sample …

What Is The Prevalence Of Overweight And Obesity And Its Relationship To Physical Activity In Children, Cameron Grove Dec 2008

What Is The Prevalence Of Overweight And Obesity And Its Relationship To Physical Activity In Children, Cameron Grove

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purpose of this research project is to see if there is a relationship between the amount of physical activity a child gets during the week and their BMI. Previous studies have revealed an increase in the occurrence of childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity, and associations have been identified between physical activity, sedentary behaviors, dietary patterns and students perceptions of overweight and obesity (Tremblay, 2003). This research study was a casual comparative validation study due to the secondary data that was collected by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Overweight and obesity are determined by the BMI …

Patient To Nurse Ratios And Safety Outcomes For Patients, Julie Rinaldifuller Dec 2008

Patient To Nurse Ratios And Safety Outcomes For Patients, Julie Rinaldifuller

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Hospital administrators are given the challenge of how to staff their hospitals cost effectively while maintaining a safe culture for the public. This study was conducted to determine the association between the patient to nurse ratio and safety outcomes for patients at one local institution. Three nursing units, providing different levels of patient care, were studied, looking at adverse events involving patients and what the patient to nurse ratio was during that time. The literature review supported lower patient to nurse ratios to deliver safe patient care. With nursing care critically impacting patient safety, it would be in the interest …

Calibrating Function Point Backfiring Conversion Ratios Using Neuro-Fuzzy Technique, Justin Wong, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Danny Ho Dec 2008

Calibrating Function Point Backfiring Conversion Ratios Using Neuro-Fuzzy Technique, Justin Wong, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Danny Ho

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Software estimation is an important aspect in software development projects because poor estimations can lead to late delivery, cost overruns, and possibly project failure. Backfiring is a popular technique for sizing and predicting the volume of source code by converting the function point metric into source lines of code mathematically using conversion ratios. While this technique is popular and useful, there is a high margin of error in backfiring. This research introduces a new method to reduce that margin of error. Neural networks and fuzzy logic in software prediction models have been demonstrated in the past to have improved performance …

Healthcare Expenditure Vs Healthcare Outcomes: A Comparison Of 25 World Health Organization Member Countries, Stevan Hidalgo Dec 2008

Healthcare Expenditure Vs Healthcare Outcomes: A Comparison Of 25 World Health Organization Member Countries, Stevan Hidalgo

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study attempts to determine whether there is a correlation between a country's per capita expenditure on healthcare and its healthcare outcomes. Prior studies have been done to assess access experiences and variations by income in various countries, and to compare the US's multi-payer system to countries with universal or national health insurance. Researchers and authors agree that certain elements of a country's healthcare system are superior, while others are inferior, and that these elements combined would produce a healthcare system with first-rate outcomes, high patient satisfaction, and universal access to healthcare for all citizens. This study was carried out …

No. 22: South African Government And Civil Society Responses To Zimbabwean Migration, Tara Poizer Dec 2008

No. 22: South African Government And Civil Society Responses To Zimbabwean Migration, Tara Poizer

Southern African Migration Programme

This policy brief discusses a key paradox in relation to Zimbabwean migration into South Africa. While Zimbabwean migration since 2000 has been the largest concentrated flow in South African history, South Africa’s reaction to this movement has been characterised by the attempt to continue with ‘business as usual’ and ‘no crisis’ responses.1 Compared with most other developed and developing countries, where an inflow of tens or hundreds of thousands of people is usually treated as a political crisis, such a non-response to over a million immigrants requires explanation.

The lack of commensurate responses is especially noticeable within the various departments …

An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Caperton Forgiveness Styles Inventory, Duane Caperton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research was an investigation into the process of forgiveness. The analysis of qualitative interviews with nearly 100 participants suggested four different approaches, or styles, of forgiving and non-forgiving. The Intrapersonal style describes people who forgive other people by focusing on their own thoughts, feelings, and actions. The Interpersonal style describes people who forgive other people by focusing on the thoughts, feelings, and actions of the offending persons. The Easy Going style describes the people who never forgive anyone because they rarely or never feel offended and consequently rarely or never feel the need to forgive others. The Grudge Holder …

Geothermal (Ground-Source) Heat Pumps: Market Status, Barriers To Adoption, And Actions To Overcome Barriers, Patrick J. Hughes Dec 2008

Geothermal (Ground-Source) Heat Pumps: Market Status, Barriers To Adoption, And Actions To Overcome Barriers, Patrick J. Hughes

United States Department of Energy: Publications

More effective stewardship of our resources contributes to the security, environmental sustainability, and economic well-being of the nation. Buildings present one of the best opportunities to economically reduce energy consumption and limit greenhouse gas emissions. Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs), sometimes called ground-source heat pumps, have been proven capable of producing large reductions in energy use and peak demand in buildings. However, GHPs have received little attention at the policy level as an important component of a national strategy. Have policymakers mistakenly overlooked GHPs, or are GHPs simply unable to make a major contribution to the national goals for various reasons? …

Growing Fields Of Interest: Using An Expand And Reduce Strategy For Domain Model Extraction, Christopher Thomas, Pankaj Mehra, Roger Brooks, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Domain hierarchies are widely used as models underlying information retrieval tasks. Formal ontologies and taxonomies enrich such hierarchies further with properties and relationships associated with concepts and categories but require manual effort; therefore they are costly to maintain, and often stale. Folksonomies and vocabularies lack rich category structure and are almost entirely devoid of properties and relationships. Classification and extraction require the coverage of vocabularies and the alterability of folksonomies and can largely benefit from category relationships and other properties. With Doozer, a program for building conceptual models of information domains, we want to bridge the gap between the vocabularies …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Access to reliable, low cost energy production is key to the wellbeing of our economy, standard ofliving, and national security. As the cost of energy from conventional resources has increased, efforts have started to convert to alternative, renewable sources of energy production. Currently, wind and solar technologies are the best options for an alternative source of energy. Data on wind and solar energy resources, the availability of incentives, and the existence of renewable portfolio standards (RPS) were used to determine the most plausible influencing factors of wind and solar energy production. Maps generated from these data point to a relationship …
