The Relationship Of Self -Evaluation, Writing Ability, And Attitudes Toward Writing Among Gifted Grade 7 Language Arts Students, Lisa Dement Jan 2008

The Relationship Of Self -Evaluation, Writing Ability, And Attitudes Toward Writing Among Gifted Grade 7 Language Arts Students, Lisa Dement

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Previous research has indicated that literary skills performance in reading and writing for middle school students has declined. There remains an important gap in the current literature regarding the decline in literary skills, which is a good predictor of the potential for students to drop out of school. The goal of this study was to determine if the use of self-evaluation influences students' writing ability and their attitudes toward writing. Using a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design, and over the course of 10 weeks, the researcher administered a writing pre- and posttest, as well as a pre- and posttest Writing …

Ultrashort Laser Pulse Heating Of Nanoparticles: Comparison Of Theoretical Approaches, Thomas George, R. Letfullin Jan 2008

Ultrashort Laser Pulse Heating Of Nanoparticles: Comparison Of Theoretical Approaches, Thomas George, R. Letfullin

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The interaction between nanoparticles and ultrashort laser pulses holds great interest in laser nanomedicine, introducing such possibilities as selective cell targeting to create highly localized cell damage. Two models are studied to describe the laser pulse interaction with nanoparticles in the femtosecond, picosecond, and nanosecond regimes. The first is a two-temperature model using two coupled diffusion equations: one describing the heat conduction of electrons, and the other that of the lattice. The second model is a one-temperature model utilizing a heat diffusion equation for the phonon subsystem and applying a uniform heating approximation throughout the particle volume. A comparison of …

Visual Analysis: Yellowtown The Aesthetics Of Poverty, The Graphic Design Of Urgency, Karen Lewis Jan 2008

Visual Analysis: Yellowtown The Aesthetics Of Poverty, The Graphic Design Of Urgency, Karen Lewis

RIT Digital Archives

Pawn shops, pay-day-advance brokers, national check cashiers, gun and ammunition suppliers, discount cigarettes, beer, and liquor, 24-hour locksmiths, and automotive repair shops (figure 1, following page) frequently use a bright, shiny, plastic, primarily-yellow colored signage to identify themselves. These businesses, aimed especially at those in a state of urgency or distress, are often located in the poorest areas of the city. Because of the consistency of the use of the color yellow by these urgent businesses, and because of the limited areas where they appear “to belong,” a massing of yellow signage color codes the poorest parts of the city …

Changing Places: The Cost Of Actualizing The Imagined, Gethin Davison Jan 2008

Changing Places: The Cost Of Actualizing The Imagined, Gethin Davison

RIT Digital Archives

The tension between proposals for urban change and a desire to protect the existing ‘place-identity’ of established neighborhoods is a key issue of contention in many communities, with a broad range of developments resisted on the basis that an existing place-identity would be damaged or destroyed. This paper sets out to explore some of these tensions, and to uncover ways in which urban design and development might contribute to the creation of new identities that do not destroy the existing meanings and experiences of place. Reporting the findings of empirical research undertaken at the highly-awarded ‘Subi Centro’ development in Perth, …

Research Brief: Time Of Day Effect On Performance At A User Interface, Prabir Mukhopadhyay Jan 2008

Research Brief: Time Of Day Effect On Performance At A User Interface, Prabir Mukhopadhyay

The paper investigates the effect of time of day at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) interface. Two dependent variables, time taken and error rate were measured. 11 male students participated in the experiment which involved a set task at an ATM simulated on a PC in a controlled environment. Subjects were asked to perform the task at three different times of the day, 9.00am, 1.00 pm and 9.00 pm. The order of the sequence in which the subjects performed the task was randomized by Latin square design to minimize order effect. One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) on transaction time and …

Universal Design: Is It Accessible?, Jane Bringolf Jan 2008

Universal Design: Is It Accessible?, Jane Bringolf

RIT Digital Archives

Designing products and environments to be usable by the majority of people is the underpinning concept of universal design1. In some aspects, however, universal design fails to meet some of its own principles. This has resulted in a lack of understanding of the concept, which in turn, has allowed the terms “accessibility” and “disability” to inhabit the language of universal design. This means universal design is now bounded by concepts of accessibility, regulations and disability rights, rather than the intellectual challenges inherent in designing for the whole of the population bell curve. The universal design movement recognizes that making headway …

Pre-Commencement Discovery And The Odex Litigation: Copyright Versus Confidentiality Or Is It Privacy?, Sze Shun, George Wei

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article examines whether internet service providers are under any duty to disclose the names of subscribers whose accounts can be shown to be associated with infringing activity. This question involves tension between the economic interests of copyright owners/licensees, the privacy interests of internet users and the economic interests of the internet service provider. This tension in turn raises age-old problems of balance and proportionality between privacy, confidentiality and other competing rights and freedoms as well as the interests of society at large. The article concludes by briefly touching on privacy areas from outside of copyright and the Internet: including …

What does religion mean to the individual? How are people religious and what do their beliefs, practices and identities mean to them? The individual's place within studies of religion has tended to be overlooked recently in favour of macro analyses. Religion and the Individual draws together authors from around the world to explore belief, practice and identity. Using original case studies and other work firmly placed in the empirical, contributors discuss what religious belief means to the individual. They examine how people embody what religion means to them through practice, considering the different meanings that people attach to religion and …

Private Query On Encrypted Data In Multi-User Setting, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Xuhua Ding, Yanjiang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searchable encryption schemes allow users to perform keyword based searches on an encrypted database. Almost all existing such schemes only consider the scenario where a single user acts as both the data owner and the querier. However, most databases in practice do not just serve one user; instead, they support search and write operations by multiple users. In this paper, we systematically study searchable encryption in a practical multi-user setting. Our results include a set of security notions for multi-user searchable encryption as well as a construction which is provably secure under the newly introduced security notions.

Do Sages Have Emotions?, Alan Kam Leung Chan Jan 2008

Do Sages Have Emotions?, Alan Kam Leung Chan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Contemporary discussions of Confucian philosophy may tend to privilege certain key ethical concepts such as “benevolence“ (ren 仁) and “filial piety” (xiao 孝), but in traditional China much of the Confucian hermeneutical and philosophical enterprise revolved around the figure of the ideal “sage” (shengren 聖 人 ). Virtues are neither abstract nor self-existing; they are seen to cohere and find profound expression in the being of the sage. In this context, “sagehood“ thus emerges as a critical concern in Confucian self-understanding. Can sagehood be attained? Can the “average person” (zhongren 中人), indeed, become like Confucius, the sage par excellence, who …

The Contribution Of The International Court Of Justice To The Development Of International Environmental Law: A Contemporary Assessment, Dr. Jorge E. Viñuales Jan 2008

The Contribution Of The International Court Of Justice To The Development Of International Environmental Law: A Contemporary Assessment, Dr. Jorge E. Viñuales

Fordham International Law Journal

The article provides a detailed and up-to-date assessment of the contribution of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to the development of International Environmental Law (IEL), including the potential in this respect of the cases currently pending before the Court. The author argues that the ICJ's contribution to IEL can be organized in two main waves of cases. The legacy of the first wave, which covered essentially the Corfu Channel and the Nuclear Tests cases, as well as an important obiter dictum made in the Barcelona Traction case, was the confirmation of previous case-law on transboundary damages as well as …

"More Adversarial, But Not Completely Adversarial": Reformasi Of The Indonesian Criminal Procedure Code, Robert R. Strang

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article provides a perspective not normally available to U.S. legal scholars in the area of comparative law -- it is a firsthand account of criminal procedure reform in the Republic of Indonesia. Indonesia, the world’s fourth largest country by population and the largest civil law jurisdiction, has embarked on sweeping legal, political, and institutional reform in the ten years since the collapse of authoritarian rule. Half way around the world from the U.S., Indonesia is virtually unknown to Western legal scholars, yet the changes being made in Indonesian criminal procedure are fundamental: establishing a suspect’s right to remain silent; …

Gendercide And The Cultural Context Of Sex Trafficking In China, Susan Tiefenbrun, Christie J, Edwards Jan 2008

Gendercide And The Cultural Context Of Sex Trafficking In China, Susan Tiefenbrun, Christie J, Edwards

Fordham International Law Journal

This paper discusses the interconnection of historic, legal, and cultural contexts that result in the perpetuation of discrimination against women in Chinese society. The contextual analysis attempts to explain the causes for an increase in trafficking of women and the deplorable human rights violations perpetrated upon women in China today. The remedies to eliminate trafficking proposed in this paper are not easily implemented. The OCP must be revised to provide more incentives to rational family planning rather than harsh punishments and coercion. China needs to reverse a long-standing cultural tradition of male son preference and discrimination against women. We know …

Gravity And The Legitimacy Of The International Criminal Court, Margaret M. Deguzman Jan 2008

Gravity And The Legitimacy Of The International Criminal Court, Margaret M. Deguzman

Fordham International Law Journal

References to gravity are threaded throughout the Rome Statute's provisions relating to jurisdiction and its exercise. These references reflect the drafters' philosophical vision for the Court, but fail to provide the institution with clear legal guidance. Part II begins by examining the relevant statutory provisions, exploring ambiguities in the text and suggesting how it should be interpreted. It then canvases the legislative history for indications of the drafters' intent and evaluates the approaches to gravity adopted thus far by the Court's judges and Prosecutor. The analysis in this Part demonstrates that gravity plays two essential and distinct roles for the …

A Theory Of Internationally Regulated Goods, Asif Efrat Jan 2008

A Theory Of Internationally Regulated Goods, Asif Efrat

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article examines the overlooked countertrend of international trade regulation. It offers a theory of internationally regulated goods ("IRGs") that explains why certain goods are regulated internationally, how governments form their preferences on international regulation, and how they establish cooperation. This Article argues that international regulation allows governments to make up for the deficiencies of national regulation by inducing the externalities-generating countries to establish proper controls. Beyond identifying and analyzing the trend of internationally regulated goods, this Article makes several additional contributions. Most importantly, the theoretical model bridges rationalist and nonrationalist accounts of international law by combining self-interest calculations with …

Adhesion Enhancement Of Polymeric Films On Glass Surfaces By A Silane Derivative Of Azobisisobutyronitrile (Aibn)., Sudhir Mulik, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Nicholas Leventis

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Adhesion of polymeric films on surfaces can be due to a combination of van der Waals, electrostatic or covalent interactions between the two materials. The interfacial adhesion between a polymer film and glass or metal can be improved by using a broad class of silane coupling agents. Typically, silane coupling compounds used for adhesion improvement have structure similar to (R´O)3-Si-R, where R´O- is an alkoxy group and -R is an organofunctional group. Under appropriate reaction conditions alkoxy groups condense with hydroxyl groups available on the surface, resulting in surfaces decorated with organofunctional -R groups, which promote formation of covalent bonding …

Thermal Analysis Of Adsorbed Poly(Vinyl Acetate) On Silica, Boonta Hetayothin, Frank D. Blum Jan 2008

Thermal Analysis Of Adsorbed Poly(Vinyl Acetate) On Silica, Boonta Hetayothin, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The physical properties of polymers at interfaces can be quite different from those in bulk due to the interaction between the absorbed polymer and the surface. This phenomenon can be probed through the dynamic behavior of the polymer chains at the interface which can be experimentally probed by techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR),1 viscoelasticity, and calorimetry. At the polymer-air interface, polymer chains have more flexibility than those at the polymer-substrate interface. On the other hand, at the silica-polymer interface, where chains are more restricted on the surface, a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) results as compared with …

On Existence And Uniqueness Results For The Bbm Equation With Arbitrary Forcing Terms, Timothy A. Smith

Publications

The problem of classical solutions for the regularized long-wave equation is considered where various additional forcing terms are introduced which are often required for physical modifications in the wave theory. Sufficient conditions of solvability and existence are established and then these conditions are related to the structure of the forcing terms under consideration.

An Evaluation Of Visitor Decisions Regarding Alternative Transportation In Glacier National Park, Melissa Lynn Baker Jan 2008

An Evaluation Of Visitor Decisions Regarding Alternative Transportation In Glacier National Park, Melissa Lynn Baker

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In 2007, Glacier National Park implemented a free, voluntary shuttle bus system along the Going to the Sun Road. The first year of implementation of the transit system at Glacier National Park presented a unique opportunity to evaluate visitor behavior in national parks. One way that transportation mode choice has been understood is through the theory of planned behavior, which characterizes social behavior as the result of conscious, deliberate thought processes directly related to the behavior in question. This study examined the intersection of national park visitors' recreation experience preference and their decisions toward shuttle use in a national park. …

Calculated values are compared with the Nominal the Best signal to noise ratio. Copyright © 2008 …

Perceived Discrimination And Depressive Symptomatology Among Native American Older Adults, Rita Haidle Billow Jan 2008

Perceived Discrimination And Depressive Symptomatology Among Native American Older Adults, Rita Haidle Billow

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Recent studies have recognized discrimination as a stressor that is linked to psychological distress for those who experience such discrimination. The present study investigated the role of cultural identification as a moderator of the relationship between a global measure of perceived discrimination and depressive affect for a sample of older Native American adults, a group that has essentially been ignored in the empirical literature. The data were collected through surveys mailed to tribally-enrolled Native American adults aged 50 and older residing on a reservation in the Northwest. Multiple regression analysis was performed to test the moderating role of cultural identification. …

The Life History And Ecology Of Riverine Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) In A Large Floodplain River, Tyler Huntley Tappenbeck Jan 2008

The Life History And Ecology Of Riverine Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) In A Large Floodplain River, Tyler Huntley Tappenbeck

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The productivity and life history diversity of salmonids is linked to the complexity of habitat in large floodplain rivers. Dynamic floodplain processes are driven by flow, sediment transport, cut and fill alluviation, woody plant succession, and ecosystem engineers, notably beavers, that create dynamic and biophysically complex off-channel rearing and spawning habitats. Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) display some of the most variable life history traits of all Pacific salmon, using lake and river rearing strategies throughout rivers of the northern Pacific Rim. However, sockeye management has primarily focused on the lake-type life history with minimal regard to the importance of the …

Mindfulness : Extending Treatment For Early Onset Obsessive Compulsive Disorder / Tourettes Syndrome, Rita L. Baldino Jan 2008

Mindfulness : Extending Treatment For Early Onset Obsessive Compulsive Disorder / Tourettes Syndrome, Rita L. Baldino

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Mindfulness is a categorical name for a group of techniques borrowed from ancient Buddhist practices that teach individuals to pay attention in the present moment. Recently, the technique has been applied successfully in several clinical populations to help individuals live with, or accept, some of the difficult-to-treat symptoms of their illnesses. This intervention study takes three specific techniques from the mindfulness literature and introduces them to a young male who had been diagnosed and has received evidence-based treatment for early onset obsessive compulsive disorder, comorbid with Tourette’s syndrome. Fourteen sessions, scheduled over eight weeks, occurred. Three measures of effectiveness were …
