The Evolving Role Of Chemical Engineers In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Tushar Misra Dec 2008

The Evolving Role Of Chemical Engineers In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Tushar Misra

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Traditionally in the pharmaceutical industry, chemical engineers have been employed in the manufacture of fine chemicals, advanced intermediates and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). They have also played an important role in the biotechnology industry, where their specialized understanding of fermentation and separation techniques has been utilized effectively. In the last twenty years, they have also had growing opportunities to contribute to the development of drug products. Such industries allow for the application of skills and techniques that a chemical engineer learns: unit operations, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, mathematical modeling, process development and scale-up, cost analysis, etc. However, with the emergence of …

Light-Induced Relocalization Of The Photoreceptor G Protein Transducin Is Mediated By Binding Partner-Restricted Diffusion: New Insights Into G Protein Subunit Dissociation, Derek H. Rosenzweig Dec 2008

Light-Induced Relocalization Of The Photoreceptor G Protein Transducin Is Mediated By Binding Partner-Restricted Diffusion: New Insights Into G Protein Subunit Dissociation, Derek H. Rosenzweig

Open Access Dissertations

Phototransduction is a well characterized system for study of G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling. The GPCR rhodopsin couples to the heterotrimeric G protein transducin. Light-stimulated activation of transducin in turn activates phosphodiesterase (PDE), leading to closure to cGMP-gated channels and inhibition of glutamate release. Rod and cone photoreceptors are highly polarized neurons consisting of the outer segment (OS) where phototransduction biochemistry occurs, the inner segment containing mitochondria and other organelles, the nuclear layer, an axon, and a glutamatergic synapse. Upon illumination, activated G protein transducin redistributes from the rod OS (where it is localized in the dark) to the …

Optical Hyperspace For Plasmons: Dyakonov States In Metamaterials, Zubin Jacob, Evgenii E. Narimanov Dec 2008

Optical Hyperspace For Plasmons: Dyakonov States In Metamaterials, Zubin Jacob, Evgenii E. Narimanov

Birck and NCN Publications

We show that the subdiffraction imaging behavior observed in the magnifying superlens experiment, [Smolyaninov , Science 317, 1699 (2007)] is due to the hyperbolic dispersion of Dyakonov plasmons supported by the device. These states which are a special case of Dyakonov surface waves [Dyakonov, Sov. Phys. JETP 67, 714 (1988)] exist at the interface of a metal and an anisotropic dielectric giving rise to plasmon beams on resonance. Furthermore, we describe how the unique properties of metamaterial Dyakonov plasmons can be tailored for plasmonic devices.

The Institutionalization Of Diversity And Gender Equity Norms And Values In Higher Education Settings, Rowanna Lynn Carpenter Dec 2008

The Institutionalization Of Diversity And Gender Equity Norms And Values In Higher Education Settings, Rowanna Lynn Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses

Universities in the United States increasingly experience demographic, business, and community pressure to hire, retain, and educate women and ethnic minority faculty, staff, and students. Responses to this pressure have changed over time from isolated open-door initiatives to comprehensive diversity initiatives designed to create welcoming campus environments for people of all backgrounds. Current literature on the assessment of diversity initiatives in higher education suggests the need to use approaches that include attention to the entire university, and to institutionalize the norms and values associated with diversity initiatives as part of the change process. Despite this shift toward a comprehensive understanding …

Fingering Instabilities On Reaction Fronts In The Co Oxidation Reaction On Pt(100), D. Bilbao, Jochen A. Lauterbach Dec 2008

Fingering Instabilities On Reaction Fronts In The Co Oxidation Reaction On Pt(100), D. Bilbao, Jochen A. Lauterbach

Faculty Publications

Fingering instabilities arising from local perturbations to planar reaction fronts in the CO oxidation reaction on Pt(100) are presented. CO oxidation represents a heterogeneous nonlinear system with the necessary kinetic and diffusive transport properties to support the development of fingered wave fronts. External forcing was utilized to create CO wave fronts on an otherwise monostable, O-covered surface, which, upon destabilization, gave rise to fingers of adsorbed CO extending into the O adlayer ahead of the reaction front. Finger spreading and tip-splitting were observed as the finger pattern evolved towards an intrinsic wavelength, independent of the length of the reaction front, …

The Effect Of Liquid Hot Filling Temperature On Blow-Molded Hdpe Bottle Properties, Benjamin S. Hudson Dec 2008

The Effect Of Liquid Hot Filling Temperature On Blow-Molded Hdpe Bottle Properties, Benjamin S. Hudson

Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of deformation in plastic bottles is a common problem in the bottling industry where bottles are blow molded, hot filled at high temperatures and sealed. Plastics have unique properties that make it difficult to predict when and why such changes may occur. The root cause of such deformation is unknown by many bottle producers and recent attempts have been made to minimize the occurrence of such defects. The purpose of this research is to determine which variables involved in the bottle production process influence bottle shape. Earlier variables that were tested included both blow molding resin and total …
