Comparison Of Different Chemical Pulps From Wheat Straw And Bleaching With Xylanase Pre-Treated Ecf Method, Sai̇m Ateş, Celi̇l Atik, Yonghao Ni, Esat Gümüşkaya

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Different pulping processes, kraft-anthraquinone (AQ), bio-kraft, soda-AQ, ALCELL, and FORMACELL were studied for wheat straw. Fungal pre-treatment with Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, white rot fungi, was applied to wheat straw before kraft-AQ pulping, the so-called bio-kraft process. Fiber properties, carbohydrate contents, FT-IR analyses, strength properties of resultant paper, and bleachability characteristics were included to determine the properties of these pulp samples. In addition, the effects of the xylanase pre-treatment on the subsequent Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) bleaching process were investigated. The results indicated that kraft-AQ pulps from wheat straw exhibited better characteristics than the other pulp samples with lower kappa number, higher …

Mechanisms Of Hemoglobin Adaptation To High Altitude Hypoxia, Jay F. Storz, Hideaki Moriyama Jan 2008

Mechanisms Of Hemoglobin Adaptation To High Altitude Hypoxia, Jay F. Storz, Hideaki Moriyama

Hideaki Moriyama Publications

Evidence from a number of vertebrate taxa suggests that modifications of hemoglobin (Hb) function may often play a key role in mediating an adaptive response to high altitude hypoxia. The respiratory functions of Hb are a product of the protein’s intrinsic O2-binding affinity and its interactions with allosteric effectors such as protons, chloride ions, CO2, and organic phosphates. Here we review several case studies involving high altitude vertebrates where it has been possible to identify specific mechanisms of Hb adaptation to hypoxia. In addition to comparative studies of Hbs from diverse animal species, functional studies of …

Data Assimilation And Visualization For Ensemble Wildland Fire Models, Soham Chakraborty

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis describes an observation function for a dynamic data driven application system designed to produce short range forecasts of the behavior of a wildland fire. The thesis presents an overview of the atmosphere-fire model, which models the complex interactions between the fire and the surrounding weather and the data assimilation module which is responsible for assimilating sensor information into the model. Observation plays an important role in data assimilation as it is used to estimate the model variables at the sensor locations. Also described is the implementation of a portable and user friendly visualization tool which displays the locations …

Novel Catalysts For The Production Of Co- And Co2-Free Hydrogen And Carbon Nanotubes By Non-Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Hydrocarbons, Wenqin Shen Jan 2008

Novel Catalysts For The Production Of Co- And Co2-Free Hydrogen And Carbon Nanotubes By Non-Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Hydrocarbons, Wenqin Shen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Non-oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons is an attractive alternative route for the production of CO- and CO2-free hydrogen. It will satisfy a major requirement for successful utilization of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells (< 10 ppm CO) and sequestering carbon as a potentially valuable by-product, carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Due to the deposition of carbon on the surface of catalyst particles during the reaction, catalyst performance, life-time, and purification of the generated carbon product, are significant issues to solve in order to make the process practically feasible. The scope of this thesis includes: the development of novel Fe, Ni, and Fe-Ni catalysts supported on a Mg(Al)O support to achieve improved catalytic performance with easily-purified CNTs; evaluation of catalysts for ethane/methane dehydrogenation at moderate reaction temperatures; and study of activation and deactivation mechanisms by a variety of characterization techniques including TEM, HRTEM, XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. The Mg(Al)O support was prepared by calcination of synthetic MgAl-hydrotalcite with a Mg to Al ratio of 5. The catalysts were prepared either by conventional incipient wetness method or by a novel nanoparticle impregnation method, where the monodisperse catalyst nanoparticles were prepared in advance by thermal decomposition of a metal-organic complex in an organic-phase solution and then dispersed onto the Mg(Al)O support. Dehydrogenation of undiluted methane was conducted in a fix-bed plug-flow reactor. Before reaction, the catalysts were activated by reduction in hydrogen. Fe-based catalysts exhibit a higher hydrogen yield at temperature above 600ºC compared with monometallic Ni catalyst. FeNi-9 nm/Mg(Al)O, Fe-10 nm/Mg(Al)O and Fe-5 nm/ Mg(Al)O nanoparticle catalysts show much improved performance and longer life-times compared with the corresponding FeNi IW/Mg(Al)O and Fe IW/Mg(Al)O catalysts prepared by incipient wetness. 10 nm is the optimum particle size for methane dehydrogenation. Addition of Ni to Fe forming a bimetallic FeNi alloy catalyst enhances the catalytic performance at the temperatures below 650ºC. Metallic Fe, Ni, FeNi alloy and Fe-Ni-C alloy, unstable iron carbide are all catalytically active components. Catalysts deactivation is due to the carbon encapsulation. The carbon products are in the form of stack-cone CNTs (SCNTs) and multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs), depending on the reaction temperature and catalyst composition. The growth of CNTs follows a tip growth mechanism and the purity of cleaned CNTs is more than 99.5%.

A Whole Cell Based Biosensor For Monitoring Physiological Toxins And Early Screening Of Cancer, Gargi Ghosh Jan 2008

A Whole Cell Based Biosensor For Monitoring Physiological Toxins And Early Screening Of Cancer, Gargi Ghosh

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Recently a whole cell based biosensor has been developed in our laboratory that consists of a monolayer of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) on the asymmetric cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane of an ion selective electrode (ISE). When a confluent cell monolayer is formed across the membrane, response from the sensor is inhibited due to inhibited ion transport across the membrane. When the cell based biosensor is exposed to permeability modifying agents, the permeability across the cell monolayer is altered facilitating more ion transport and as a result the response from the sensor increases. This sensor response can be related …

'We Are Obligated To Think That The State Is Just:' The Akp's Geographies Of Islam And The State In Turkey, W. Jefferson West Ii

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In the 2002 national elections in Turkey, the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP) won a majority of parliamentary seats and the leadership of all government ministries. Viewed by many voters as an alternative to both Turkey’s Kemalist establishment and the country’s Islamist political movement, this self described ‘conservative democratic’ party composed of former Islamist politicians and political neophytes sought to establish a Muslim political identity that was neither Islamist nor secular. This dissertation explores the discourse used by AKP politicians as they navigated several highly charged issues involving the religion-state relationship in Turkey. By examining what geographies AKP politicians articulated …

On The Commander-In-Chief Power, David Luban Jan 2008

On The Commander-In-Chief Power, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since September 11, the Bush administration has asserted broad, exclusive presidential war powers under the Commander in Chief Clause. However, the minimalist language of the Clause never specifies what powers a commander in chief possesses. This paper argues, based on military history, original understanding, and the contemporary theory of civilian-military relations, that the commander-in-chief power is narrow rather than broad. In ancient and feudal societies, like contemporary military dictatorships, civilian and military dominion are fused to consolidate power in the hands of a single leader – a warrior-king or fighting executive, whose military prowess validates the claim to civilian rule. …

Heat Capacity Anomalies Of Tlins_2 And Tlgas_2 Single Crystals Detected By Differential Scanning Calorimetry (Dsc), Muhammed Açikgöz

Turkish Journal of Physics

Specific heat capacity C_p anomalies of layered single crystals TlInS_2 and TlGaS_2 have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as a new technique for such crystals. Special features of C_p have been revealed in the temperature range of the possible phase transitions of both crystals. A sequence of maximum values of C_p is obtained at 163, 174, 184, 193, 201, 212, 224, 254, and 259 K for TlInS_2. In the case of TlGaS_2, the temperatures of the obtained maximum C_p values at 177 and 241 K agree well with the intervals of the phase transition temperatures reported in the …

Characterization Of Thin Film Al/P-Cdte Schottky Diode, M. G. Mahesha, V. B. Kasturi, G. K. Shivakumar

Turkish Journal of Physics

A study has been made on the behavior of Al/p-CdTe thin film junction grown by thermal evaporation method. I-V characteristics show that the Al makes Schottky contact with p-CdTe. The variation of junction capacitance with frequency and voltage has been studied to evaluate the barrier height. The activation energy and band gap have been estimated by studying variation of resistivity with temperature. Using all these data, band diagram of Al/p-CdTe has been proposed.

Tracer Tests In Karst Hydrogeology And Speleology, Nico Goldscheider, Joe Meiman, Michiel Pronk, Christopher Smart

International Journal of Speleology

This article presents an introduction to the fundamentals of tracing techniques and their application in cave and karst environments, illustrated by case studies from the Mammoth Cave, USA, and a small experimental site in Switzerland. The properties and limitations of the most important artificial tracers are discussed, and the available methods of tracer injection, sampling, online monitoring and laboratory analysis are presented. Fully quantitative tracer experiments result in continuous or discrete concentration-time data series, i.e. breakthrough curves, and concomitant discharge data, which make it possible to obtain detailed information about groundwater flow and contaminant transport. Within the frame of speleological …

Multiple Channel Coherent Amplitude Modulated (Am) Time Division Multiplexing (Tdm) Software Defined Radio (Sdr) Receiver, Veerendra Bhargav Alluri Jan 2008

Multiple Channel Coherent Amplitude Modulated (Am) Time Division Multiplexing (Tdm) Software Defined Radio (Sdr) Receiver, Veerendra Bhargav Alluri

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

It is often required in communication and navigation systems to be able to receive signals from multiple stations simultaneously. A common practice to do this is to use multiple hardware resources; a different set of resources for each station. In this thesis, a Coherent Amplitude Modulated (AM) receiver system was developed based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology enabling reception of multiple signals using hardware resources needed only for one station. The receiver system architecture employs Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) to share the single hardware resource among multiple streams of data. The architecture is designed so that it can be …

Parametrization And Shape Reconstruction Techniques For Doo-Sabin Subdivision Surfaces, Jiaxi Wang Jan 2008

Parametrization And Shape Reconstruction Techniques For Doo-Sabin Subdivision Surfaces, Jiaxi Wang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis presents a new technique for the reconstruction of a smooth surface from a set of 3D data points. The reconstructed surface is represented by an everywhere -continuous subdivision surface which interpolates all the given data points. And the topological structure of the reconstructed surface is exactly the same as that of the data points. The new technique consists of two major steps. First, use an efficient surface reconstruction method to produce a polyhedral approximation to the given data points. Second, construct a Doo-Sabin subdivision surface that smoothly passes through all the data points in the given data set. …

Adaptive, Multi-Objective Job Shop Scheduling Using Genetic Algorithms, Haritha Metta Jan 2008

Adaptive, Multi-Objective Job Shop Scheduling Using Genetic Algorithms, Haritha Metta

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This research proposes a method to solve the adaptive, multi-objective job shop scheduling problem. Adaptive scheduling is necessary to deal with internal and external disruptions faced in real life manufacturing environments. Minimizing the mean tardiness for jobs to effectively meet customer due date requirements and minimizing mean flow time to reduce the lead time jobs spend in the system are optimized simultaneously. An asexual reproduction genetic algorithm with multiple mutation strategies is developed to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. The model is tested for single day and multi-day adaptive scheduling. Results are compared with those available in the literature for …
