A Construct With Fluorescent Indicators For Conditional Expression Of Mirna., Linghua Qiu, Hongyan Wang, Xugang Xia, Hongxia Zhou, Zuoshang Xu

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Transgenic RNAi holds promise as a simple, low-cost, and fast method for reverse genetics in mammals. It may be particularly useful for producing animal models for hypomorphic gene function. Inducible RNAi that permits spatially and temporally controllable gene silencing in vivo will enhance the power of transgenic RNAi approach. Furthermore, because microRNA (miRNA) targeting specific genes can be expressed simultaneously with protein coding genes, incorporation of fluorescent marker proteins can simplify the screening and analysis of transgenic RNAi animals. RESULTS: We sought to optimally express a miRNA simultaneously with a fluorescent marker. We compared two construct designs. One expressed …

Do Off-Campus Students Use E-Books?, Pamela Grudzien, Anne Marie Casey Jan 2008

Do Off-Campus Students Use E-Books?, Pamela Grudzien, Anne Marie Casey

Publications

The number of electronic books (e-books) that are available is increasing rapidly. Libraries are acquiring them individually, in large groups, and as part of collections. Off-campus librarians perceive them to be the best solution to the problems and expenses related to loaning and shipping print books to off-campus students. This study looks at the usage of e-books by off-campus students at Central Michigan University (CMU) to see if usage patterns can assist librarians with e-book collection development to support off-campus programs.

A Process Plan For Consensus Building In The Evaluation Of Nsgc & Epscor Native American Outreach Program, Jocelyn S. Nickerson, Brent D. Bowen, Henry R. Lehrer

Publications

The NASA Nebraska Space Grant (NSGC) & EPSCoR Programs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha have embarked on a unique educational journey known as the Nebraska Native American Outreach program (NNAOP). The NNAOP’s main objective is to encourage and motivate Native American students to be more competitive in mathematics and science. This program has allowed for a variety of educational and public outreach activities to take place. However, in order to continually provide effective support to Nebraska’s Native American community, NSGC & EPSCoR sought an evaluation technique for the NNAOP. To execute such an evaluation, NSGC organized the first …

The Reciprocating Joule Cycle Engine For Micro Combined Heat And Power Applications, Robert William Allen Jan 2008

The Reciprocating Joule Cycle Engine For Micro Combined Heat And Power Applications, Robert William Allen

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Micro CHP has been identified as a means of reducing the carbon dioxide emissions from household energy consumption. Large scale field trials undertaken in the UK, with systems internal to a single dwelling and based on Stirling engines, were disappointing because of the low thermal efficiencies of such engines. Alternative engines/devices with higher thermal efficiencies are currently being evaluated in Japan but such systems are external to the dwelling. The reciprocating Joule cycle engine is proposed as an engine for a micro CHP system because of its potential to be more thermally efficient than a Stirling engine and at least …

Ebay's Practical Effect: Two Differing Visions, Jay Dratler Jan 2008

Ebay's Practical Effect: Two Differing Visions, Jay Dratler

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This short paper examines the likely effect of the Court's three opinions on the actual practice of intellectual property cases in their remedial phase. The first part briefly discusses the unanimous opinion and its likely economic effect in increasing the already daunting complexity-and therefore the already considerable cost-of intellectual property litigation. The second part examines the first concurring opinion and the effect of its implicit suggestion that nothing much has really changed. The third part examines the possible practical effect of the second concurring opinion. The conclusion then offers a few general observations on where remedial practice in patent cases …

Zealous Lawyering Succeeds Against All Odds: Major Mori And The Legal Team For David Hicks At Guantanamo Bay, Ellen Yaroshefsky Jan 2008

Zealous Lawyering Succeeds Against All Odds: Major Mori And The Legal Team For David Hicks At Guantanamo Bay, Ellen Yaroshefsky

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Beginning in 2002, when the first detainees were sent to Guantanamo Bay, civilian and military lawyers worked diligently to secure access to those detainees and to provide them with meaningful and zealous representation. It was several years before the first detainee obtained a hearing. That detainee, David Hicks, was an Australian represented by military lawyer, Major Michael (Dan) Mori, other military lawyers, and civilian lawyers. This essay describes the legal, political and media strategy of the Hicks legal team in a highly publicized case that raised profound ethical challenges to the lawyers’ ability to be zealous advocates. In a system …

Part 6: Wunderbar! German Firms In Hampton Roads, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University Jan 2008

Part 6: Wunderbar! German Firms In Hampton Roads, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Our region is home to 31 companies hailing from the Federal Republic of Germany and they represent the largest contingent (19 percent) of the area’s international firms. These firms “insource” rather than “outsource” jobs and pay above-average compensation to their workers.

Part 4: Women Earn Less Than Men In Hampton Roads. Why?, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University Jan 2008

Part 4: Women Earn Less Than Men In Hampton Roads. Why?, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

As is true nationally, women in Hampton Roads earn less than men. Gender earnings differentials are particularly large in occupations characterized by “crowding” – where women constitute a sizable proportion of those employed. Economically speaking, women may be better off in the Richmond metro area than in Hampton Roads.

Transverse Structure Of Wind-Driven Flow At The Entrance To An Estuary: Nansemond River, Diego A. Narváez, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson Jan 2008

Transverse Structure Of Wind-Driven Flow At The Entrance To An Estuary: Nansemond River, Diego A. Narváez, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson

CCPO Publications

Observations of current velocity profiles were combined with an analytical solution to study the transverse partition of the wind-driven flow in an estuary, the Nansemond River, which is a tributary of the James River in the Chesapeake Bay. Observations spanned two periods of nearly 3 months in autumn-winter of 2003-2004 and spring-summer 2004. The wind-driven circulation consisted of downwind flow over the shoal and upwind flow in the channel at the entrance to the estuary. This pattern developed mainly with landward winds and provided observational evidence that sustains analytical and numerical model results. The transverse structure of the flow showed …

Kilovolt Blumlein Pulse Generator With Variable Pulse Duration And Polarity, Andrea De Angelis, Juergen F. Kolb, Luigi Zeni, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 2008

Kilovolt Blumlein Pulse Generator With Variable Pulse Duration And Polarity, Andrea De Angelis, Juergen F. Kolb, Luigi Zeni, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A Blumlein pulse generator which utilizes the superposition of electrical pulses launched from two individually switched pulse forming lines has been designed and tested. By using a power metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor as a switch on each end of the Blumlein line, we were able to generate pulses with amplitudes of 1kV across a 100Ω load. Pulse duration and polarity can be controlled by the temporal delay in the triggering of the two switches. Using this technique, we have demonstrated the generation of pulses with durations between 8 and 60ns. The lower limit in pulse duration was determined by the switch …

Agent-Based Modeling And Possible Implications On Management And Engineering Management, Ipek Bozkurt, Jose J. Padilla, Andres A. Sousa-Poza Jan 2008

Agent-Based Modeling And Possible Implications On Management And Engineering Management, Ipek Bozkurt, Jose J. Padilla, Andres A. Sousa-Poza

VMASC Publications

Engineering Management (EM) is a discipline that takes pride in bridging two major fields, namely engineering and management. It is clear from any basic research conducted within this field that both engineering and management tools and paradigms need to be used jointly. A mixture that encompasses quantitative and qualitative research, as well as theoretical and empirical research is found in literature, making Engineering Management, as a discipline, very complex in nature. As this complexity evolves, so should the tools of the craft. It is interesting, however, to see that Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) as a tool or as a topic of …

Examining Granular Computing From A Modeling Perspective, Ying Xie, Jayasimha R. Katukuri, Vijay V. Raghavan

Faculty Articles

In this paper, we use a set of unified components to conduct granular modeling for problem solving paradigms in several fields of computing. Each identified component may represent a potential research direction in the field of granular computing. A granular computing model for information analysis is proposed. The model may suggest that granular computing is an instrument for implementing perception based computing based on numeric computing. In addition, a novel granular language modeling technique is proposed for information extraction from web pages. This paper also suggests that the study of data mining in the framework of granular computing may address …

The Riddle Of A Riddle, Ivan Gaskell Jan 2008

The Riddle Of A Riddle, Ivan Gaskell

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This paper examines the distinction made by Arthur C. Danto between artworks and what he terms "mere real things." It presents an eighteenth-century tool for sifting grain (a riddle) as a case study in the contexts of first, the house of its first known owner, General Artemas Ward (1727-1800); second, an exhibition 2006-7 drawn from the contents of that house pointedly held in an art museum; and, third, the likely maker of the object, a member of Hassanimisco Band of Nipmuc Indians. It examines the equivocal position of objects such as this in Danto's estimation, things that he considers to …

Smes In Globalized World: A Brief Note On Basic Profiles Of Pakistan’S Small And Medium Scale Enterprises And Possible Research Directions, Sarath W.S.B. Dasanayaka

Business Review

The Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) are playing very significant role in almost all the economies around the world in irrespective of the countries development stage. However it is obvious that SMEs function as a lifeline in informal sector in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe due to their contribution to overall economy in many aspects such as employment generation, exports, tax income, innovation, competitiveness, equitable income distribution, social stability, domestic resources usage, regional development and ultimately it is the main source of economic growth. The Pakistan is no exception to this phenomenon as a developing country located …

Effects Of Free Trade Agreements (Ftas) On Construction Firms In Singapore, Low Sui Sui, June S.Y. Khoo

Business Review

Since the 1950s, the international trading system has been characterized by a shift from the multilateral processes towards bilateral and regional arrangements. The signing of the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (USSFTA) by the Prime Minister of Singapore and the President of the United States is but part of Singapore’s overall trade initiatives and economic strategy which involves forging free trade agreements (FTA) with other countries outside the ASEAN region. This study seeks to analyze the effect of FTA in the context of the construction industry with respect to local contractors. A questionnaire-based survey and in-depth personal interviews were conducted with …
