Imaging In Karst Terrain Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Iana Muchaidze
Masters Theses
"The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) plans to construct a new intersection between highway 60 and highway 65 to alleviate traffic congestion during peak flow periods. This construction site, which is referred to as the Route 60/65 study site in this thesis, is located on the southeastern side of Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. Bedrock in the study area (Burlington-Keokuk Limestone) is characterized by karstic features such as loosing streams, underground caves, and sinkholes. Prior to the commencement of construction, MoDOT conducted a study of the subsurface conditions in the Route 60/65 study site. The main objective was to identify features, …
Modeling And Measurement Of Thermal Residual Stresses And Isotope Effects On Thermo Physical Properties Of Zrb₂-Sic Ceramics, Michael P. Teague
Modeling And Measurement Of Thermal Residual Stresses And Isotope Effects On Thermo Physical Properties Of Zrb₂-Sic Ceramics, Michael P. Teague
Masters Theses
"Commercially available finite element modeling software (ABAQUS) was used to investigate the internal residual stresses that develop as a result of cooling from processing temperatures in ZrB₂-SiC ceramics. The size and shape of the SiC particles were varied to evaluate their effect on the residual stresses. Results were compared to experimental data and showed similar trends, where increasing SiC particle size increased tensile stress and also decreased strength. Models were used to analyze benefits of novel shaped SiC inclusions and also better understand the short comings of the composites. An attempt to validate the models using neutron diffraction to measure …

Sorting Automated Concept Generator Results Based On Manufacture And Assembly Concerns, Kerry Ryan Poppa
Sorting Automated Concept Generator Results Based On Manufacture And Assembly Concerns, Kerry Ryan Poppa
Masters Theses
"Early in the design process, it is desirable to produce a large number of potential solutions. Completely exploring a problem's solution space is an unreasonable expectation for an unaided designer or design team. Computational tools have emerged to help designers more fully explore possible solutions. These automated concept generators use knowledge from existing designs and the desired functionality of the new product to suggest solutions. Existing automated concept generation methods produce many candidate solutions, but produce unmanageably large sets of solutions. Techniques are needed to organize the set of concepts into smaller groups, more easily parsed by the human designer. …

Ground Motion Sensitivity Analyses For The Greater St. Louis Metropolitan Area, Ece Karadeniz
Masters Theses
"Local site effects can play an important role in modifying the intensity of ground shaking and earthquake damage. The process of rock motion propagating through the soil column can be approximated using one-dimensional site response analyses. To evaluate the likely site response several input parameters are required. These include: thickness of the unconsolidated soil cap, shear wave velocity, unit density, dynamic soil properties, and acceleration time histories. Considerable uncertainty often exists in regards to these input parameters. In this study, the program Shake2000 was employed for site response analyses and sensitivity analyses were performed to determine how the uncertainties in …
Autothermal Non-Catalytic Reformation Of Jet Fuel In A Supercritical Water Medium, Jason W. Picou
Autothermal Non-Catalytic Reformation Of Jet Fuel In A Supercritical Water Medium, Jason W. Picou
Masters Theses
"The non-catalytic reformation of jet fuel using supercritical water was studied in a specially designed 0.4-L Haynes Alloy 230 tubular reactor. Experiments were performed at a constant pressure of 24.1 MPa, a temperature of 770°C, and at a constant water-to fuel ratio of fifteen-to-one by mass with various space times and oxygen flow rates. The experiments were conducted with and without air flow so as to examine the effects of the concurrent partial oxidation on the overall reformation process. The reactor effluent gas consisted of hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane and ethane. Increasing space time increases the extent …
Forecasting Using The T-Method, Parthiv Akshay Shah
Forecasting Using The T-Method, Parthiv Akshay Shah
Masters Theses
"The T-method is a technique developed by Genichi Taguchi to calculate an overall prediction based on the signal-to-noise ratio without the use of Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. The Taguchi Methods, also known as robust design principles, is used to determine the optimal levels of control factors through planning and conducting experiments, and evaluating their results. The primary goal of Robust Design is to minimize variance in the presence of noise factors to achieve a robust process. T-Method is one of the techniques evolved from Taguchi Methods. This thesis illustrates the use of the T-method and outlines it steps using four forecasting case …

Removal Of Heavy Metals From Electroplating Wastewater Using Rice Husk And Coconut Coir, Frency Mathew
Masters Theses
"Heavy metal toxicity due to industrial wastewater has been a threat to the environment for the past many decades, especially in the developing countries such as India, China and Thailand where cost effectiveness of the removal process is a major factor. In this research, the effectiveness of two natural adsorbents, rice husk (RH) and coconut coir (CC), which are cheaply available in these countries for the removal of heavy metals from electroplating wastewaters were studied"--Abstract, page iii.
An Economic Incentive Based Routing Protocol Incorporating Quality Of Service For Mobile Peer-To-Peer Networks, Anil Jade
Masters Theses
"Economic incentive models are becoming increasingly popular in Mobile Peer to Peer Networks (M-P2P). These models entice node participation to combat free riding and to effectively manage constraint resources in the network. Due to the dynamic topology of the M-P2P network, the connections between the peers become unpredictable and therefore, reliable routing becomes important. Many routing protocols proposed earlier (such as DSR, AODV) are based on best effort data traffic policy, such as the shortest route selection (hop minimization). Using economic models to find a cost effective optimal route from the source to the destination, while considering Quality of Service …
The Effect Of Clinical Education On Law Student Reasoning: An Empirical Study, Stefan H. Krieger
The Effect Of Clinical Education On Law Student Reasoning: An Empirical Study, Stefan H. Krieger
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
During the past thirty years, clinical legal education has become an important component of most law school curricula. In clinics, students, typically in their second or third year of law school, represent clients in actual cases in a legal aid office at the law school, pursuant to a court approved "student practice order."' Under the supervision of faculty members, students interview and counsel clients, investigate facts, research legal rules, negotiate with opposing parties, draft documents, and try and argue cases in court. Proponents of clinical education have urged the development and expansion of clinical programs to train students in the …
Ownership, Limited: Reconciling Traditional And Progressive Corporate Law Via An Aristotelian Understanding Of Ownership, Ronald J. Colombo
Ownership, Limited: Reconciling Traditional And Progressive Corporate Law Via An Aristotelian Understanding Of Ownership, Ronald J. Colombo
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Concern over issues of corporate social responsibility and corporate governance persists, fueled, in large part, by recent (and ongoing) corporate scandals of one sort or another. The debate over the nature of the corporation - and, consequently, the proper role of directors, shareholders, and other stakeholders - plays an important role in the consideration of such concerns. If one conceptualizes the corporation as an entity owned by the shareholders, then one would probably be more likely to view directors as mere agents, tasked with maximizing the wealth of their principals (the shareholders). On the other hand, rejecting such a conceptualization …
The Winding Road From Form To Function: A Brief History Of Contemporary Marriage, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern
The Winding Road From Form To Function: A Brief History Of Contemporary Marriage, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Consider this contrast: American marriage was once “rigid, work-centered, custom regulated, with well-defined roles for husband, wife, and children,” but now may be characterized as “flexible, pleasure-centered, cooperatively regulated, with loosely defined roles for husband, wife, and children.” The accuracy of this comparison between conjugal unions past and present may be debated, although on the whole the distinction it draws seems defensible. What might startle the reader, however, is that quoted contrast appeared in a 1955 college sociology text entitled “Making the Most of Marriage.” The author, noted sociologist Paul H. Landis, celebrated the pliable, fun-loving marriage of his time …

When Meat Loaf mystified scores of listeners in the early nineties by his logically inconsistent song lyrics, he almost certainly did not look to property law when answering his fans most popular question. This Essay does not argue that he should have. However, Meat Loaf's (in)famous song lyrics may be able to shed light on what has become a popular question among property fans, namely what is the nature of the right to exclude.

Family Model And Mystical Body: Witnessing Gender Through Political Metaphor In The Early Modern Nation-State, Allison Anna Tait
Family Model And Mystical Body: Witnessing Gender Through Political Metaphor In The Early Modern Nation-State, Allison Anna Tait
Law Faculty Publications
The preferred political metaphor in the constitutionalist context was the mystical political body, a concept that defined a system in which power was shared and the well-being of the community was linked to the well-being of the individual. Within the mystical political body, the theoretical possibility exists for women not only to occupy a civic space through organic (and organological) association but also to articulate their perspective and its consequences for the political community in a civically approved way. In the mystical body, women approach a citizenship status impossible within the traditional family framework and their witnessing is closely associated …

Business Lawyers, Baseball Players, And The Hebrew Prophets, Thomas L. Shaffer
Journal Articles
This article is a reflection on the ethics of practiving law for business, building on the career of Scott Boras, who acts as agent and lawyer for professional baseball players. The reflection wonders at the clout corporate lawyers have over their clients, mentioning, of course, some personal experiences (back before the invention of moveable type) from the author's two years in a large business-oriented law firm, as well as on Mr. Boras's significant influence in the baseball world. The object, finally, is ethical reflection on such things as the particular a lawyer has when she in in house rather than …

Determinants Of Financial Health Of Us General Aviation Airports, Vitaly S. Guzhva, Massoud Bazargan, David A. Byers
Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach
This survey-based study investigates the current financial environment of US general aviation airports. Due to a dearth of data and research on the financial performance of general aviation airports, the paper provides vital information regarding the critical needs and major revenue sources of such airports. The findings suggest that general aviation airports can be self-sustaining regardless of their location, runway length and other airport-specific characteristics. The attitudes of the airport manager towards the importance of financial self-sustainability, positive relationships with local communities, and utilisation of non-traditional and non-aviation revenue sources are found to be critical for the financial health of general aviation …

Emulating The Swedes: An Exploration Of The Developing Trends In Swedish Theatre For Young Audiences, Amanda Wolgast
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a practitioner in the field of Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA), I have always been drawn to looking at literature and productions that challenge my preconceptions of what constitutes good theatre for youth. I enjoy the bold and innovative, versus the cute and playful. My training and education in this developing branch of theatre has undoubtedly exposed me to the many accomplishments of the American TYA system, but quite often - through attending conferences, as well as participating in class discussions - I find that many debates/conversations center around what more we need to do in this field or …
