Quantification Of Soluble Organic Fraction Measurement Variation In Diesel Particulate Matter Emissions, John Wesley Hardin Dec 2008

Quantification Of Soluble Organic Fraction Measurement Variation In Diesel Particulate Matter Emissions, John Wesley Hardin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heavy-duty diesel engines (HDDE) are the dominate prime movers of goods and services in the United States (US) and the world today. HDDE will continue to lead the transportation sector in the near term because of its superior fuel economy and performance compared to existing alternatives. However, HDDE produce many harmful emissions constituents that include: hydrocarbons (HC), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM). Due to these harmful emissions, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been entrusted to enforce the Clean Air Act to limit the amount of emissions that can be produced from these …

Investigation Of Lubricant Oil Consumption And Its Contribution To Particulate Matter Emissions, Sam George Dec 2008

Investigation Of Lubricant Oil Consumption And Its Contribution To Particulate Matter Emissions, Sam George

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The global objective of this study was to determine lubricant oil consumption as a function of engine operating conditions, and determine its contribution to particulate matter (PM) emissions in a hydrogen-fueled engine. Hydrogen offers a promising alternative for internal combustion engines owing to its clean burning properties. The success of gaseous-fueled engines lies in the development and use of specially formulated and well researched lubricating oils as these oils are the only source of carbon emissions in hydrogen-fueled engines. The lubricant oil consumption can be determined in a hydrogen-fueled engine by measuring the carbonaceous emissions. This study determined lubricant oil …

Caveolin-1 Recruitment To The Trailing Edge Of Motile Cells Results In Focal Adhesion Disassembly And Nascent Interaction With Actin Stress Fibers, Andrew Beardsley Dec 2008

Caveolin-1 Recruitment To The Trailing Edge Of Motile Cells Results In Focal Adhesion Disassembly And Nascent Interaction With Actin Stress Fibers, Andrew Beardsley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The protein caveolin-1 has been shown to positively affect angiogenesis and vascular remodeling in vivo via studies using knockout mice. In fact, defects in these two processes are among the major hallmarks of an otherwise benign caveolin-null phenotype. Current dogma on the function of caveolin-1 does not predict or account for these deficits. The overall objective of the following studies was to uncover the role of caveolin-1 in angiogenesis and vascular remodeling through study of the protein in cell-substratum remodeling during cell motility in vitro.;In the first study, caveolin-1 and its parent organelle, caveolae, conspicuously polarize to the rear of …

Impulsivity And Trauma Exposure In Adolescents, Lisa B. Greene Dec 2008

Impulsivity And Trauma Exposure In Adolescents, Lisa B. Greene

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Trauma exposure is prevalent among adolescents and may have a negative impact on social, educational, and occupational functioning. Research indicates that individual-level variables, such as impulsivity, may be risk factors for exposure to traumatic events but the findings have been mixed. This study examined the relation between impulsivity and accidental trauma exposure using a multi-method, multi-informant procedure with a community sample of 48 adolescents. Mean age was 15.2 (SD = 1.38) and the sample was predominantly female (62.5%) and predominantly Caucasian (87.5%). No significant difference was noted between genders in terms of number of traumatic events reported. As a whole, …

Effects Of Rate Of Feedback And Reinforcement On Novel Responding, Vennessa L. Walker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ten middle-school students were assigned to receive feedback and token reinforcement either every 1 min (HR) or every 15 min (LR). Subjects used a computer program to learn to perform 5 basic algebra skills at high rates and high accuracy. Subjects were yoked with a partner for practice so that each member of the pair completed the same number of items per skill. Subjects were provided with cumulative review worksheets and then were tested for distraction, adduction, and retention. Results suggest that HR facilitates faster acquisition of skills as well as better performance on cumulative reviews, distraction, and retention tests. …

An Examination Of Liability, Duty, And Disclaimers For The Pleasure Horse Industry In West Virginia And Other States, Jennifer L. Poling

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In an effort to protect equine professionals, horse owners, and equestrian participants from liability associated with injury, 45 of 50 states have enacted Equine Activity Statutes. Many of these statutes vary widely with regard to the individuals and types of activities that are afforded protection. Under most state laws there are many requirements for horse owners and equine professionals regarding disclosure of dangerous behaviors in the horse, past medical problems, soundness issues, and other types of risks to potential buyers and handlers. Facility operators and owners are also required to make reasonable efforts to repair dangerous equipment and/or warn visitors …

The Impact Of Divorce On Physical, Social, Psychological, And Socioeconomic Well-Being, Robyn J. Barrus Dec 2008

The Impact Of Divorce On Physical, Social, Psychological, And Socioeconomic Well-Being, Robyn J. Barrus

Theses and Dissertations

Divorce brings unprecedented changes. The prevalence of divorce today constitutes a need to thoroughly study the well-being of divorced peoples. This study used a multidimensional definition of well-being to study divorced peoples and other marital statuses. Physical, social, psychological, and socioeconomic well-being were used. This study hypothesized that the married and remarried have higher well-being than the never married who in turn have higher well-being than the divorced or separated. It was also hypothesized that some are pre-disposed to divorce. ANCOVA analysis was used to test these hypotheses in a sample of approximately 9,863 respondents from the NSFH study. Support …

Rape As A Weapon Of Genocide, Alllison Ruby Reid-Cunningham Dec 2008

Rape As A Weapon Of Genocide, Alllison Ruby Reid-Cunningham

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Sexual violence against women during war and genocide is a pressing problem. Rape is used as a tactic of war and genocide because of its physical and psychosocial consequences for individuals, families, and communities. The physical and emotional sequelae of individual assaults are magnified when rape is committed on a mass scale, as in Bosnia-Herzegovina (1992–1996), Rwanda (1994), and Darfur, Sudan (2003–present). The victimization of raped women affects the community through the collective responses of survivors and their families, friends, and neighbors. Forced intercourse and impregnation represent a symbolic conquest of the woman by the rapist. This conquest becomes generalized …

Churchill In Munich: The Paradox Of Genocide Prevention, Robert Melson Dec 2008

Churchill In Munich: The Paradox Of Genocide Prevention, Robert Melson

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

A catastrophe averted is likely not to be viewed as a catastrophe. A predicted event that fails to materialize is a non-event, something that did not happen, and politicians who expend wealth and lives on something that fails to happen cannot expect to reap the rewards of their decisions. Quite to the contrary, politicians who spend lives and treasure to prevent catastrophes such as genocide are likely to be vilified and punished for their efforts: to the extent that their actions succeed in averting a catastrophe, there is no proof of their success, only of the costs of their efforts. …

War Without Borders: The Colombia-Ecuador Crisis Of 2008, Gabriel Marcella Dr. Dec 2008

War Without Borders: The Colombia-Ecuador Crisis Of 2008, Gabriel Marcella Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Unprotected borders are a serious threat to the security of a number of states around the globe. Indeed, the combination of weak states, ungoverned space, terrorism, and international criminal networks make a mockery of the Westphalian system of international order. Latin American countries are experiencing all of these maladies in varying degrees. The Andean region is under assault by a different kind of war that defies borders. In this context, Dr. Gabriel Marcella analyzes the lessons to be learned from the Colombian attack against the clandestine camp of the the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which was located at an …

Regional Spillover Effects Of The Iraq War, W. Andrew Terrill Dr. Dec 2008

Regional Spillover Effects Of The Iraq War, W. Andrew Terrill Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The Iraq war has been one of the dominant factors influencing U.S. strategic thinking in the Middle East and globally since 2003. Yet the problems of this highly dynamic and fluid war have sometimes forced U.S. policymakers to address near-term issues that cannot be safely postponed at the expense of long-term strategic thought. Such a technique, while understandable, cannot continue indefinitely as an approach to policy. Long-term planning remains vital for advancing regionwide U.S. and Iraqi interests following a U.S. drawdown from Iraq. Such planning must include dealing with current and potential “spillover” from the Iraq war.

Regional spillover problems …

Hamas And Israel: Conflicting Strategies Of Group-Based Politics, Sherifa D. Zuhur Dr. Dec 2008

Hamas And Israel: Conflicting Strategies Of Group-Based Politics, Sherifa D. Zuhur Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Efforts to separate HAMAS from its popular support and network of social and charitable organizations have not been effective in destroying the organization, nor in eradicating the will to resist among a fairly large segment of the Palestinian population. It is important to consider this Islamist movement in the context of a region-wide phenomenon of similar movements with local goals, which can be persuaded to relinquish violence or which could become more violent. Certainly an orientation to HAMAS and its base must be factored into new and more practical and effective approaches to peacemaking in the region. At the same …

Characterization Of Dna Sequences That Confer Complement Resistance In Leishmania Chagasi, Rebecca R. Dahlin-Laborde, Eric J. Scolaro, Nathan M. Romine, Amanda Ramer-Tait, Soi Meng Lei, Jeffrey K. Beetham Dec 2008

Characterization Of Dna Sequences That Confer Complement Resistance In Leishmania Chagasi, Rebecca R. Dahlin-Laborde, Eric J. Scolaro, Nathan M. Romine, Amanda Ramer-Tait, Soi Meng Lei, Jeffrey K. Beetham

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Serial passage of axenically cultured Leishmania chagasi promastigotes results in a progressive diminution in resistance to complement-mediated lysis (CML), whereas high CML resistance is seen in infectious metacyclic promastigotes from the sandfly vector as well as metacyclic-like promastigotes within low-passage cultures at stationary growth phase. As we previously reported, in a screen seeking to identify novel genes involved in CML resistance: (1) a genomic cosmid library derived from DNA of CML-resistant L. chagasi promastigotes was transfected into highpassage (constitutively CML-sensitive) L. chagasi promastigotes; (2) transformants were screened for acquisition of CML-resistance; (3) multiple cosmid-transfectants exhibited partial CML resistance; and (4) …

Corporate Confessions, Brandon L. Garrett Dec 2008

Corporate Confessions, Brandon L. Garrett

Cardozo Law Review

In corporate crime investigations, when prosecutors pursue charges against both employees and corporations, confessions raise several novel questions without clear answers in constitutional criminal procedure. First, corporations confess. The firm, a target of a criminal investigation, may itself admit to crimes by employees as part of a settlement agreement with prosecutors. While useful to study in their impact and form, as a constitutional matter such confessions can not be coerced, the Supreme Court has adopted a "collective entity rule" that corporate persons may not invoke Fifth Amendment privilege. Second, before itself confessing, the firm may encourage employees to provide statements …

Analysis And Design Of Interleaving Multiphase Dc-To-Dc Converter With Input Lc Filter, Kevin Thomas Delrosso Dec 2008

Analysis And Design Of Interleaving Multiphase Dc-To-Dc Converter With Input Lc Filter, Kevin Thomas Delrosso

Master's Theses

The future of microprocessors is unknown. Over the past 40 years, their historical trend has been for adopting smaller and more powerful designs that drive the world that we live in today. The state of the microprocessor business today faces a crossroad, wishing to continue on the historical trend of doubling the number of transistors on a chip every 18 months (Moore’s Law) but also facing the realistic task of needing to power these sophisticated devices. With the low voltages and high currents that are required for these microprocessors to operate, it poses a difficult task for the future designers …

"As-Yet-Still-Forgiven Past": Dylan Thomas And Nostalgia, David Bradley Bailey Dec 2008

"As-Yet-Still-Forgiven Past": Dylan Thomas And Nostalgia, David Bradley Bailey

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Dylan Thomas exhibited a variety of nostalgic influences within his poetry. A careful study of his life will reveal a nostalgia that evolved from adolescent musings upon an ideal past, to a self-destructive urge to return to innocence through death. Thomas incorporates a variety of historical influences within this nostalgia, but his primary influence is ultimately his own tormented past. This study not only focuses on the personal nostalgia of one man, but the variety of ways nostalgia can affect people, history and society as sociological force.

Lived Experiences Of Selected African-American Male Elementary Teachers In Georgia, Chequita Franchon Brady Dec 2008

Lived Experiences Of Selected African-American Male Elementary Teachers In Georgia, Chequita Franchon Brady

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The supply and demand of teachers is constantly changing in the United States because they are steadily flowing in, through, and out of the educational profession (Ingersoll, 2002). Many educators and administrators are concerned about the shortage and underrepresentation of minority teachers in the profession such as African- Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, and even males (Pytel, 2006). There is also an underrepresentation of African-American male elementary teachers. African- American male elementary teachers, a unique minority, are needed in the education profession to serve as role models earlier in the schooling process of young children, as well as to increase …

The work will also examine how his experience in the Nullification Crisis affected his time as secretary of war under Martin Van Buren.

Bridging Aesthetics And Community : A Story Of A Successful School, Julie Marie Sessions Dec 2008

Bridging Aesthetics And Community : A Story Of A Successful School, Julie Marie Sessions

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study begins with the construction of a bridge that symbolizes the philosophers that impact this study: John Dewey, Elliot Eisner, Maxine Greene, and Delores Liston. The bridge is the beginning of a journey where I analyze the concepts of aesthetics and community. This in-depth analysis culminates with the study of a school that successfully incorporates aesthetics and community into its curriculum. The study is based on a methodology known as portraiture (Lawrence-Lightfoot, 1997) where relationships and community involvement are important elements in telling the story of a school. In order to fully paint this portraiture, interviews were conducted, observations …

Effects Of Online, Collaborative Discourse On Secondary Student Writing: A Case Study Of The History And Ecology Of An Electronic Exchange, Julie Henderson Rucker

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Technological environments where teens spend much of their time after school are environments that educators seldom use in classroom instruction. These Web 2.0 environments are participatory, collaborative environments where teens share music, files, pictures, and ideas and are influenced by the information shared by others within their Web 2.0 environments. This study looks at a particular online environment, the Bread Loaf Teacher Network, and how secondary student writing is affected by the collaborative nature of electronic exchanges conducted on this online network. This study analyzed the history and ecology of one electronic exchange (a technological, participatory discourse community within the …

Contention And Ambiguity: Mining And The Possibilities Of Development, Anthony Bebbington, Leonith Hinojosa, Denise Humphreys Bebbington, Maria Luisa Burneo, Ximena Warnaars

Sustainability and Social Justice

The last decade and a half has witnessed a dramatic growth in mining activity in many developing countries. This article reviews these recent trends and describes the debates and conflicts they have triggered. The authors review evidence regarding debates on the resource curse and the possibility of an extraction-led pathway to development. They then describe the different types of resistance and social mobilization that have greeted mineral expansion at a range of geographical scales, and consider how far these protests have changed the relationships between mining and political economic change. The conclusions address how far such protests might contribute to …

Customer Profitability Analysis, Nsaif Jasim ‎Aljbwry, Bushra Fadhil Khudhair Al-Taie Dec 2008

Customer Profitability Analysis, Nsaif Jasim ‎Aljbwry, Bushra Fadhil Khudhair Al-Taie

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

The primary focus of modern management methods lies in achieving consumer or customer satisfaction, which constitutes the ultimate priority. Customers represent the core of success for any organization; thus, the number of "customer-driven" organizations is substantial and steadily increasing. Successful organizations (Prosper) place significant emphasis on their customers within the decision-making process. Accordingly, management accountants are paying increasing attention to Customer Profitability Analysis (CPA), whereby they record and analyze customer-specific revenues and costs. By obtaining this information, managers can ensure that customer contributions add sizably to the organization’s overall profitability. In fact, customer profitability analysis is a specialized form of …
