The Autonomy Of Ugandan Women’S Organizations: How It Matters In Creating And Maintaining A Dependable Democracy, Caroline Tushabe Dec 2008

The Autonomy Of Ugandan Women’S Organizations: How It Matters In Creating And Maintaining A Dependable Democracy, Caroline Tushabe

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

For African nations “independence” from colonial rule seemed a long-awaited time that would re-establish and/ or introduce democracy. In 1962 Uganda embraced “independence” from colonial rule with both arms. However, practices of poor governance, increased political instability and economic uncertainties slowly and steadily eroded women’s hard work which sustained the nation during the regimes of Idi Amin (1971-79) and Obote II (1980-84). When Uganda finally returned to democratic systems of government, quotas were reserved for women without any acknowledgement of women’s previous participation both in private and public spaces. Though there are now more women in government positions, the system …

Accessing Housing Finance In South Africa: The Role Of Women Activism, Catherine Ndinda, Ufo Okeke-Uzodike Dec 2008

Accessing Housing Finance In South Africa: The Role Of Women Activism, Catherine Ndinda, Ufo Okeke-Uzodike

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Women’s history in South Africa is replete with examples of exclusion, discrimination, and marginalization. The transition to democracy in 1994 and inclusion of gender equality in the post-apartheid constitution in 1996 were seen as steps in the right direction towards addressing women’s oppression and creating gender equity in accessing housing finance. The subsequent formulation of policies and institutions meant to achieve gender equality put women’s concerns in the public domain. However women’s access to capital and housing finance in particular remain challenges in accessing improved housing. An exploration of women’s position with regard to housing finance points to the ways …

Still Seeking For Something": The Unspeakable (Loss) In "Passing" By Nella Larsen, Agnieszka Mrozik Dec 2008

Still Seeking For Something": The Unspeakable (Loss) In "Passing" By Nella Larsen, Agnieszka Mrozik

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

The paper analyzes Nella Larsen’s Passing (1929) through the lens of the theory of melancholy from Freud to Butler. Examining the dynamic relationship between Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry, two protagonists of Larsen’s novella, I attempt to demonstrate that under the surface of clearly expressed racial tensions, focused upon the dilemma of passing, there is a more deeply hidden problem - the one of gender identity and sexual desire.

Can Public Debt Enhance Democracy?, Clayton P. Gillette Dec 2008

Can Public Debt Enhance Democracy?, Clayton P. Gillette

William & Mary Law Review

This Essay draws on historical and current examples to examine the extent to which public creditors can enhance democracy by monitoring public officials in a manner that compensates for the failures of the government debtor's constituents to monitor public officials. Creditors and constituents may share significant interests, depending on the structure of security arrangements for public debt and the identity of the debtors. Where interests overlap, the capacity of creditors to overcome collective action problems suffered by constituents may transform creditors into surrogates for constituents. Whether creditors are willing to play this role, however, may depend on the existence of …

Imperial And Imperiled: The Curious State Of The Executive, Saikrishna B. Prakash Dec 2008

Imperial And Imperiled: The Curious State Of The Executive, Saikrishna B. Prakash

William & Mary Law Review

In the last four decades, the presidency has been characterized both as the "imperial presidency" as well as the "imperiled presidency. "From an originalist perspective, both camps have elements of truth on their side. When it comes to the conduct and initiation of wars, modern Presidents exercise powers that rival those the Crown possessed in England. Presidents claim the power to start wars, notwithstanding Congress's power to declare war. Moreover, Presidents insist that they have the sole right to determine how the armed forces will wage all wars, even though Congress clearly has considerable power over the armed forces. Law …

Auto Updater Using Web Services, Vineel Vemula

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this project is to develop a software application which when included in any software will provide the feature of automatic updatability. One of the serious problems software industries are currently facing is the faulty and error prone nature of the software being developed. Such faulty software when having an ability to update itself automatically as soon as an update or patch is released by the vendors will be more desirable by the customers or the end users. This project develops a platform dependant application which can be included in any software that supports the Microsoft.NET framework.

Shawnee Community College Online Course Catalog, Helen M. Dunn

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Shawnee Community College, a rural community college in the southernmost portion of southern Illinois, needed an avenue to provide accurate catalog information to prospective students, current students, faculty and staff, and the community. The implementation of such a catalog was becoming more critical with the expansion of program offerings to include degrees sought through online means alone. The SCC Online Catalog project was chosen by the institution to provide a solution to the current catalog situation and a project plan was formed. After identifying platform options, the project team and the identified key stakeholders chose to utilize ASP.NET 2.0 along …

Pyrosequencing Analysis Of The Trichodiene Synthase 5 (Tri 5) Gene From The Members Of The Genus Stachybotrys, Tineace Taylor Farrow Dec 2008

Pyrosequencing Analysis Of The Trichodiene Synthase 5 (Tri 5) Gene From The Members Of The Genus Stachybotrys, Tineace Taylor Farrow

Theses (Pre-2016)

This research will focus on multiple isolates of Stachybotrys species from culture collection companies which will be studied in an attempt to determine the presence of the Trichodiene synthase 5 (Tri5) gene, an enzyme involved in the early stages of the biosynthesis of trichothecenes. Using general primers, the Tri5 gene will be amplified by customized PCR technique. The amplicons will be sequenced using a new multiple sequence technique personally designed. Stachybotrys is a genus of filamentous fungi belonging to the class of anamorphic ascomycetes (Kirk et al, 2001). The genus has a single well-known species, Stachybotrys chartarum. S. chartarum was …

“Poor Fools, Nothing But Bellies” (Theo 26-27): Eating Imagery In Hesiod As Personification Of Oppression, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton Dec 2008

“Poor Fools, Nothing But Bellies” (Theo 26-27): Eating Imagery In Hesiod As Personification Of Oppression, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Delivered during the 1999 meeting at the University of Notre Dame, this paper discusses the symbolic power of food imagery, especially its use in the cultural construction of humanity and in the process of dehumanization of oppressed groups. Tracing the use of food and eating imagery to the early seventh century BCE Greek poet Hesiod, Flint-Hamilton demonstrates the importance of studying early Classical texts to help us better understand modern-day oppression and the legacy of slavery.

Racial Reconciliation In Christian Ethics: Toward Starting A Conversation, Bryan Massingale Dec 2008

Racial Reconciliation In Christian Ethics: Toward Starting A Conversation, Bryan Massingale

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this article, delivered originally in 1998 at Marquette University, the author confronts the reality of racism by introducing the need for racial reconciliation. Addressing such issues as social structures and evangelical approaches to the question of race, Massingale ends with a critique of the approach of Catholic theologians and ethicists to racial justice. In the end, Massingale remarks that for Catholics the legacy of slavery continues to hinder an openness to the reality of Africans and African Americans in the Church and in society.

The French Subjective Theory Of Contract: Separating Rhetoric From Reality, Wayne Barnes Dec 2008

The French Subjective Theory Of Contract: Separating Rhetoric From Reality, Wayne Barnes

Faculty Scholarship

Most of the world, including Anglo-American jurisdictions, conforms to the objective theory of contract, which posits that contract formation is determined by reference solely to external evidence of manifestations of assent. On the other hand, France uniquely clings to the rhetoric of its “subjective” theory of contract, championing the freedom of the individual and the autonomy of the will. France’s association with a subjective theory of contract is widely recognized and assumed. One would initially assume that the French subjectivist philosophy would result in dramatically different outcomes in actual cases, when compared with the objectivist rules-based perspective that obtains in …

The Wagner-Peyser Act And U.S. Employment Service: Seventy-Five Years Of Matching Job Seekers And Employers, Christopher J. O'Leary, Randall W. Eberts

Reports

This paper provides an overview of the public labor exchange system in the United States, how it came to be, and where it is going. The paper begins by offering a brief history of the development of the U.S. Employment Service, emphasizing the federal-state partnership that has evolved over time and highlighting the differing priorities Congress has placed on the services funded under Wagner-Peyser Act. It then examines the ways workers search for jobs and employers recruit employees. It also shows the role the ES plays in this job matching process. The complementarity between ES services and the broader workforce …

A Comparative Analysis Of Factors Contributing To The Biblical Worldview Among High School Students In The American Association Of Christian Schools Of Georgia, North Carolina, And South Carolina, Michael Hugh Bryant

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This non-experimental quantitative study is a comparative analysis of factors contributing to the biblical worldview of students attending select Christian schools in the states of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The research design uses non-randomized control groups, an instrument which includes original questions in addition to items from three other instruments, and a Likert-type scale. Results imply that the subjects appear to consistently reflect orthodox doctrine in their responses, if not always in their behavior. The subjects were homogenous in many of their answers even though there were particular questions that evoked a wide disparity of answers. The particular …

Predicting Counseling Psychologists' Attitudes And Clinical Judgments With Respect To Older Adults, Jody K. Tomko Dec 2008

Predicting Counseling Psychologists' Attitudes And Clinical Judgments With Respect To Older Adults, Jody K. Tomko

Dissertations

With an emphasis on developmental, strengths-based approaches, as well as a commitment to training multiculturally competent practitioners, the profession of counseling psychology and counseling psychologists are potentially equipped to help address the mental health needs of older adults. Amid projections that Baby Boomers will utilize mental health services at a higher rate than previous cohorts (Rosowsky, 2005), understanding the factors involved in preparing counseling psychologists to provide services to older adults is critical. Older adults, however, have not traditionally been a population served by psychologists (Laganà & Shanks, 2002). Further, possible factors involved in the training and experience of counseling …

Modeling Fluid Structure Interaction Over A Flexible Fin Attached To A Naca0012 Airfoil, Srinivasa Ravindra Pantula Dec 2008

Modeling Fluid Structure Interaction Over A Flexible Fin Attached To A Naca0012 Airfoil, Srinivasa Ravindra Pantula

Dissertations

Flow separation control is of importance to the performance of air vehicles. Generally, it is desired to postpone separation such that the overall drag is reduced, stall is delayed, lift is enhanced, and pressure recovery is improved. This work explores a new concept of post-stall flow control for airfoils and wings by using a thin flexible fin attached on the upper surface of an airfoil to passively manipulate flow structures in the fully separated flows for drag reduction and lift enhancement. The flow induced oscillations combined with the shape deformations change the overall pressure distribution on the fin, which in …

Estadounidenses And Gringos As Reality And Imagination In Mexican Narrative Of The Late Twentieth Century, Jessica Lynam Dec 2008

Estadounidenses And Gringos As Reality And Imagination In Mexican Narrative Of The Late Twentieth Century, Jessica Lynam

Dissertations

The representation of North Americans in contemporary Mexican narrative texts is frequent, complex and worthy of study. The present dissertation makes no pretense of being a comprehensive catalogue of “gringos” in Mexican narrative; it can be better seen as a cross-section of Mexican literature concerning people from the United States published during the final two decades of the twentieth century. My intention is to explore how this Mexican narrative has characterized non-Mexican Americans and contextualize these visions in terms of their cultural and historical origins. In this study I analyze six texts authored by both men and women, border authors …
