Flexible Twist For Pitch Control In A High Altitude Long Endurance Aircraft With Nonlinear Response, Vanessa L. Bond Dec 2008

Flexible Twist For Pitch Control In A High Altitude Long Endurance Aircraft With Nonlinear Response, Vanessa L. Bond

Theses and Dissertations

Information dominance is the key motivator for employing high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) aircraft to provide continuous coverage in the theaters of operation. A joined-wing configuration of such a craft gives the advantage of a platform for higher resolution sensors. Design challenges emerge with structural flexibility that arise from a long-endurance aircraft design. The goal was to demonstrate that scaling the nonlinear response of a full-scale finite element model of a high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) aircraft was possible if the model was aeroelastically and "nonlinearly" scaled. A straight-forward method of scaling the first three natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes, and the first …

Community Project Design and Management Reports - Sociology

The experience and process of aging has become a prominent topic of discussion nationwide and Central Illinois is no exception, due to the rapid growth within the senior population in the area. The 60 and over population of Illinois is projected to grow by 87% during the next 30 years (The Maturing of Illinois). An initiative has been developed to evaluate how prepared local communities are for older adults by conducting needs assessments, which can also serve as vital tools for those who plan and provide human services in communities. Often community leaders will form policies and allocate limited resources …

Modeling Capture Zones To Determine Potential Threats To The Public Water Supply Wells, Jordan Wollak

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority uses groundwater wells to provide drinking water to the residents of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. Proper management is needed to ensure that the residents have safe drinking water. This study focuses on a particular water distribution trunk of the Albuquerque Water System. Ridgecrest Trunk wells provide approximately 20 percent of the water for Albuquerque, New Mexico. However, throughout the area there are numerous sites that have known releases of hazardous materials that have contaminated soil and groundwater. Warm Hydroforming Characteristics Of Stainless Steel Sheet Metals, Eren Billur Dec 2008

Warm Hydroforming Characteristics Of Stainless Steel Sheet Metals, Eren Billur

Theses and Dissertations

For numerical modeling and predictive analysis of warm hydroforming, better understanding of material properties (i.e. Flow curves) is required at elevated temperatures and high strains. Hydraulic bulge testing is a suitable method to obtain this information. However, analysis of the test data is not standardized as there are numerous approaches developed and adopted throughout the years. In this study, first, different approaches for hydraulic bulge analysis were compared with stepwise experiments to determine the best combination of approaches in obtaining accurate flow curves at different temperatures and strain rates. Then, three different grades of stainless steels (AISI 201, 301 and …

Season Of Birth And Risk For Schizophrenia, Seth Roberts Dec 2008

Season Of Birth And Risk For Schizophrenia, Seth Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic, debilitating mental disorder characterized by positive (e.g., hallucinations, delusions) and negative (e.g., catatonia, flat affect) signs and symptoms. Many studies suggest that individuals born in winter or spring months are at increased risk for schizophrenia. Study Objectives: 1) To determine whether season of birth affects risk for schizophrenia in the Irish Study of High Density Schizophrenia Families (ISHDSF). 2) To examine, by computer simulation, power to detect genetic associations with schizophrenia under a variety of conditions and using different analytic strategies. 3) To test whether specific genes are associated with schizophrenia in the Irish Case …

Molecular Mechanisms Involved In Oligodendrocyte Development, Rochelle Coelho Dec 2008

Molecular Mechanisms Involved In Oligodendrocyte Development, Rochelle Coelho

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by demyelination and loss of oligodendrocytes (OLGs), the CNS myelin-producing cells. Thus, understanding the mechanisms that control OLG development can provide valuable knowledge regarding remyelination therapies for MS. This disease is thought to result from an autoimmune attack towards myelin. FTY720, an immunomodulator under evaluation for MS treatment is a sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) analog. We found before that S1P plays a crucial role in the NT-3-mediated survival of OLGs, an observation that led us to investigate whether FTY720 could have any effect on these cells. Our studies …

Brown And The Colorblind Constitution, Christopher W. Schmidt Dec 2008

Brown And The Colorblind Constitution, Christopher W. Schmidt

All Faculty Scholarship

This Essay offers the first in-depth examination of the role of colorblind constitutionalism in the history of Brown v. Board of Education. In light of the recent Supreme Court ruling in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School Dist. No. 1 (2007), such an examination is needed today more than ever. In this case, Chief Justice John Roberts drew on the history of Brown to support his conclusion that racial classifications in school assignment policies are unconstitutional. Particularly controversial was the Chief Justice's use of the words of the NAACP lawyers who argued Brown as evidence for his colorblind …

Department of Radiology

Introduction:Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare pathology of unknown etiology characterized by inflammation and fibrosis in the mesentery. Its protean clinical and radiological manifestations make it a diagnostic challenge. There is no established treatment available for its management. The clinical outcome is inconsistent, with the prognosis ranging from complete resolution without any treatment to rapid progression culminating in death. Case Presentation: A 33-year-old Pakistani man presented with vague abdominal pain, an ill-defined epigastric mass and bilateral pedal edema. A detailed review of his history and laboratory investigations did not point to any diagnosis. The Patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy based …

Co-Administration Of Sildenafil Potentiates Doxorubicin-Induced Apoptosis In Prostate Cancer: The Role Of Nf-Kappab, Sarah Hassanieh Dec 2008

Co-Administration Of Sildenafil Potentiates Doxorubicin-Induced Apoptosis In Prostate Cancer: The Role Of Nf-Kappab, Sarah Hassanieh

Theses and Dissertations

Our recent studies have shown that that erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs including Sildenafil (Viagra), Vardenafil (Levitra) and Tadalafil (Cialis) enhance killing of several types of cancer cells by anticancer drug, Doxorubicin (DOX). We observed increased cell death by apoptosis in response to the combined treatment with ED drugs and DOX. However, the mechanism of such enhancement of cell death by combined treatment of ED drugs and DOX is not fully understood. Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) is an oxidant-sensitive transcription factor that plays a critical role in the immediate-early activation of a multitude of genes that have been documented to play critical …
