Pseudonaja textilis is a widespread and common snake in eastern parts of Australia, but its distribution in New Guinea is poorly understood, and the origin of the New Guinea populations and its timing have been the subject of much speculation. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences from three New Guinea populations of P. textilis indicates that New Guinea was colonised from two independent eastern and western migration routes most likely in the Pleistocene. One dispersal event from northern Queensland led to the populations in eastern New Guinea (Milne Bay, Oro and Central Provinces, Papua New Guinea), whereas another, from Arnhem …

Bioinformatics Research In The Asia Pacific: A 2007 Update, Shoba Ranganathan, Michael Gribskov, Tin Wee Tan
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We provide a 2007 update on the bioinformatics research in the Asia-Pacific from the Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet), Asia's oldest bioinformatics organisation set up in 1998. From 2002, APBioNet has organized the first International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB) bringing together scientists working in the field of bioinformatics in the region. This year, the InCoB2007 Conference was organized as the 6th annual conference of the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network, on Aug. 27–30, 2007 at Hong Kong, following a series of successful events in Bangkok (Thailand), Penang (Malaysia), Auckland (New Zealand), Busan (South Korea) and New Delhi (India). Besides a scientific …
Regulating Nanotechnology: A Private–Public Insurance Solution, Maksim Rakhlin
Regulating Nanotechnology: A Private–Public Insurance Solution, Maksim Rakhlin
Duke Law & Technology Review
Nanotechnology promises to revolutionize innovation in nearly every industry. However, nanomaterials’ novel properties pose potentially significant health and environmental risks. Views in the current debate over nanotechnology regulation range from halting all research and development to allowing virtually unregulated innovation. One viable regulatory solution balancing commercialization and risk is the adoption of a mandatory private-public insurance program.

Hydrogen Sensor Using Optical Reflectance From Porous Silicon With A Palladium Thin Film, Christopher G. Lowrie, Susan K. Earles, Maria E. Pozo De Fernandez
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Results of a hydrogen sensor based on light scattering from a porous silicon surface coated with a thin palladium film are discussed. Reflected light scattered from the rough surface of porous silicon surface with a thin palladium film is compared before and after exposure to hydrogen gas. After exposure to hydrogen gas the sensor's optical reflectance is decreased indicating the presence of hydrogen.

Porous Silicon Surface Feature Size Estimation Using The Reflectance Spectrum, Christopher G. Lowrie, Susan K. Earles, Maria E. Pozo De Fernandez
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
In this paper we excite the surface of porous silicon with incoherent, broad band white light and observe the spectrum of colors reflected from the surface. Using an atomic force microscope images from red and green porous silicon samples are collected. In this paper we relate the optical color of the surface to the size of scattering features on the textured surface. From image segmentation using the watershed transform the height distributions of the optical scattering features are determined. The heights of these surface features are then used as input variables to a computer simulation of a reflective grating. The …
The Inflammatory Consequences Of Stress And Adiposity, Cathy A. Bykowski
The Inflammatory Consequences Of Stress And Adiposity, Cathy A. Bykowski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The inflammatory process is important in protecting the body against the invasion of pathogens, but recent research has suggested that a long-term inflammatory response may lead to chronic diseases (e.g., Black, 2003; Wu, Dorn, Donahue, Sempos, & Trevisan, 2002). Two factors that have been implicated in the inflammatory and disease processes are stress and obesity (Black, 2003). While their individual lines of research continue to grow, few researchers have attempted to integrate these factors into one model to explain their effects on inflammation. This study aimed to replicate previous findings suggesting relationships between stress, obesity and inflammation and test an …
The Moderating Role Of Meaning And Defense Mechanisms In The Association Between Child Sexual Abuse And Romantic Relationship Dysfunction, Angela Fairweather
The Moderating Role Of Meaning And Defense Mechanisms In The Association Between Child Sexual Abuse And Romantic Relationship Dysfunction, Angela Fairweather
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current study investigated whether finding meaning in relation to sexual trauma and using mature defense mechanisms would moderate the association between child sexual abuse (CSA) severity and relationship and psychological adjustment in a sample of undergraduate women with a history of child sexual abuse. CSA severity was measured both objectively (i.e., severity of the abusive event) and subjectively (i.e., self-reported perceptions of the severity of the abusive event). As predicted, the interaction of objective CSA severity and mature defenses uniquely predicted one of four aspects of romantic relationship functioning (i.e., dyadic cohesion or doing joint activities with one's partner), …
The Interplay Of Economic, Climatic And Cultural Change Investigated Through Isotopic Analyses Of Bone Tissue: The Case Of Sardinia 4000-1900 Bc, Luca Lai
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the broader aim of reconstructing long-term resource use and ecological history for better policy making in times of environmental change, this study is an attempt to decode the mutual effects of human subsistence practices, climate and socio-cultural organization in Sardinia between 4000 and 1900 BC. Was economy changing due to climate change? Was the environment changing due to economic practices? And how were economic practices and socio-cultural factors interacting? The answer is complex, and some convergence of complex systems theory, historical ecology and agency supports this. Diet, at the interface of all of these as fulfilling biological needs constrained …

Concept/Mind Mapping: Initial Experience And Lessons Learned (Part 2), Aziza Ellozy Dr., Hoda Mostafa
Faculty Journal Articles
In our last issue we introduced concept mapping and mindmapping as learning and assessment tools. We discussed the context in which we decided to use these devices in “Scientific Thinking”, a course designed for freshmen. We highlighted the difference between the two mapping methods, described how they are created, and made suggestions as to how they can be incorporated in your courses. We emphasized that our approach to mapping was a hybrid approach that integrated the powerful visual cues of mindmapping into concept maps.

Retinoic Acid Decreases Atf-2 Phosphorylation And Sensitizes Melanoma Cells To Taxol-Mediated Growth Inhibition, Ying Huang, Jennifer Minigh, Sarah Miles, Richard N. Niles
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Cutaneous melanoma is often resistant to chemo- and radiotherapy. This resistance has recently been demonstrated to be due, at least in part, to high activating transcription factor 2 (ATF-2) activity in these tumors. In concordance with these reports, we found that B16 mouse melanoma cells had higher levels of ATF-2 than immortalized, but non-malignant mouse melanocytes. In addition, the melanoma cells had a much higher amount of phosphorylated (active) ATF-2 than the immortalized melanocytes. In the course of determining how retinoic acid (RA) stimulates activating protein-1 (AP-1) activity in B16 melanoma, we discovered that this retinoid decreased the phosphorylation of …
