Aristotle's Abstract Ontology, Allan Bäck Mar 2008

Aristotle's Abstract Ontology, Allan Bäck

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Aristotle has a metaphysics of individual substances, substrata persisting through time that are neither in nor said of a subject. That I do not dispute. However, when we move from the individual to the universal, from perception to knowledge, Aristotle has a metaphysics of relations. This I will try to sketch out here.

Aristotle appeals to abstraction at key places in his philosophy. Somehow abstraction gets us to the first principles and to the objects of the most fundamental sciences. Somehow universals are abstracted from singulars and have no transcendent existence.

Aristotle never states his theory of abstraction formally or …

Benefits Of Using Marginal Opportunistic Wildlife Behavior Data: Constraints And Applications Across Taxa – A Dominance Hierarchy Example Relevant For Wildlife Management, Kim Jochum Mar 2008

Benefits Of Using Marginal Opportunistic Wildlife Behavior Data: Constraints And Applications Across Taxa – A Dominance Hierarchy Example Relevant For Wildlife Management, Kim Jochum

Faculty

This study is a new approach on collecting, handling and examining wildlife behavior data across mammal species in order to provide new and unique conclusions from efficient data collection schemes. Sophisticated dominance hierarchy patterns and the ability of individual recognition are well described in many large mammals such as monkeys and cetaceans through the effort of detailed long-term studies. Their implications are well known as important topics regarding management strategies, especially for endangered species. However worldwide, for other large mammals, e.g. bears, detailed long-term wildlife behavior studies are virtually not available. This is due to the inaccessibility and inefficient observation …

Gene Rearrangement Analysis And Ancestral Order Inference From Chloroplast Genomes With Inverted Repeat, Feng Yue, Liying Cui, Claude W. Depamphilis, Bernard M.E. Moret, Jijun Tang Mar 2008

Gene Rearrangement Analysis And Ancestral Order Inference From Chloroplast Genomes With Inverted Repeat, Feng Yue, Liying Cui, Claude W. Depamphilis, Bernard M.E. Moret, Jijun Tang

Faculty Publications

Background
Genome evolution is shaped not only by nucleotide substitutions, but also by structural changes including gene and genome duplications, insertions, deletions and gene order rearrangements. The most popular methods for reconstructing phylogeny from genome rearrangements include GRAPPA and MGR. However these methods are limited to cases where equal gene content or few deletions can be assumed. Since conserved duplicated regions are present in many chloroplast genomes, the inference of inverted repeats is needed in chloroplast phylogeny analysis and ancestral genome reconstruction.

Results
We extend GRAPPA and develop a new method GRAPPA-IR to handle chloroplast genomes. A test of GRAPPA-IR …

Hidden Village (42sa2112): A Basket Maker Iii Community In Montezuma Canyon, Utah, Donald G. Montoya

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on the Basketmaker III period of the Ancestral Puebloan culture commonly known as the Anasazi, which means ‘ancient stranger’ or ‘ancient enemy’ in the Navajo language, or as preferred by the Hopi; "Hisatsinom" for "The Ones Who Came Before." I use the terms Anasazi and Ancestral Puebloan interchangeably in this study. My particular focus concentrates on a Basketmaker III settlement (42Sa2112 – Hidden Village) in Montezuma Canyon in southeastern Utah. My thesis presents data and an interpretive hypothesis that village formation and complex social organization emerged earlier than most standard texts (Plog 1997) assume. Analysis of …

Supplemental Protocol For Liana Censuses, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Suzanne Rutishauser, Salomón Aguilar

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Lianas affect many aspects of tropical forest dynamics and thus the study of their ecology is critical for a comprehensive understanding of tropical forest ecology. Recently, we initiated a complete census of all lianas ≥1 cm diameter in the 50 ha forest dynamics plot on Barro Colorado Island, Panama using the census protocol developed by Gerwing et al. [Gerwing, J.J., Schnitzer, S.A., Burnham, R.J., Bongers, F., Chave, J., DeWalt, S.J., Ewango, C.E.N., Foster, R., Kenfack, D., Martinez-Ramos, M., Parren, M., Parthasarathy, N., Perez-Salicrup, D.R., Putz, F.E., Thomas, D.W., 2006. Nucleoplasmic And Cytoplasmic Degradation Of Telomerase: Implications Toward Telomerase-Based Cancer Therapy, Binh Nguyen Mar 2008

Nucleoplasmic And Cytoplasmic Degradation Of Telomerase: Implications Toward Telomerase-Based Cancer Therapy, Binh Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein that is reactivated in cancer cells to allow for continuous cellular division and indefinite growth. With telomerase being expressed in more than 85% of all cancer, it is imperative that we understand how to selectively inactivate and degrade this unique DNA polymerase. In doing so, we can specifically target tumor cells to erode their telomeres so that they will undergo apoptosis or senescence. Through this research, we have learned that telomerase can be degraded in the nucleoplasm by Hsp90 chaperone inhibition and in the cytoplasm by the dominant negative mutant, D712A V713I. These findings should guide …

Downregulation Of Bk Channel Expression In The Pilocarpine Model Of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Luis F. Pacheco Otalora, Eder F. Hernandez, Massoud F. Arshadmansab, Sebastian Francisco, Michael Willis, Boris Ermolinsky, Masoud M. Zarei, H.-G Knaus, Emilio R. Garrido-Sanabria

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

In the hippocampus, BK channels are preferentially localized in presynaptic glutamatergic terminals including mossy fibers where they are thought to play an important role regulating excessive glutamate release during hyperactive states. Large conductance calcium-activated potassium channels (BK, MaxiK, Slo) have recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of genetic epilepsy. However, the role of BK channels in acquired mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) remains unknown. Here we used immunohistochemistry, laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), western immunoblotting and RT-PCR to investigate the expression pattern of the alpha-pore forming subunit of BK channels in the hippocampus and cortex of chronically epileptic rats obtained …

Estimation Of The Number Of Microbial Species Comprising A Population, Melanie R. Slattery Mar 2008

Estimation Of The Number Of Microbial Species Comprising A Population, Melanie R. Slattery

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the appropriateness of using non-parametric estimators, specifically the Chao1, ACES, and Jackknife methods, for estimation of the number of unique species comprising a population. It goes on to develop a parametric method for the above stated problem. This research consisted of creating diverse populations, with known numbers of species, and applying the aforementioned non-parametric and parametric methods to samples drawn from the constructed populations. The parametric fitting of several different distributions to the sample data, including the lognormal, gamma, and Weibull was considered. Both types of methodologies were then applied to sample …

Three Models Of Anthrax Toxin Effects On The Map-Kinase Pathway And Macrophage Survival, Daniel J. Schneider Mar 2008

Three Models Of Anthrax Toxin Effects On The Map-Kinase Pathway And Macrophage Survival, Daniel J. Schneider

Theses and Dissertations

Lethal factor (LF), a component of anthrax toxin, is the primary virulence factor that allows Bacillus anthracis to evade the immune response by blocking the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) enzymes. This research modifies three published MAPK models to reflect this signal inhibition and to estimate a first-order reaction rate by fitting the models to published viability data for two macrophage cell lines cultured with the LF-producing Bacillus anthracis-Vollum1B strain. One model appears to be ill-suited for this purpose because not all relevant MAPK components could be integrated into the inhibition equations. Despite different underlying parameters and values, the …

Blending The Battlefield: An Analysis Of Using Private Military Companies To Support Military Operations In Iraq, Heather L. Gallup Mar 2008

Blending The Battlefield: An Analysis Of Using Private Military Companies To Support Military Operations In Iraq, Heather L. Gallup

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past fifteen years, the Department of Defense has experienced an increasing trend in the outsourcing and privatization of military operations. Key factors contributing to the growth include declines in military budgets, reductions in active duty end-strength, increases in operational deployments, advancements in weapon system technology, and evolutions in the nature of warfare. However, the continued escalation of incorporating Private Military Companies (PMCs) on the battlefield creates unique challenges. The purpose of this exploratory and descriptive research is to identify utilization rates, describe the types of roles being fulfilled, and synthesize the challenges of augmenting military manpower with civilian …

The Evaluation Of A Commercially-Available Abduction Prevention Program, Kimberly V. Beck Mar 2008

The Evaluation Of A Commercially-Available Abduction Prevention Program, Kimberly V. Beck

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Child abduction is a serious problem in the U.S.; therefore, it is essential that researchers evaluate the efficacy of currently available abduction prevention programs. This study evaluated the efficacy of a commercially-available abduction prevention program, The Safe Side. The participants included six 6-8-year old children with no prior abduction prevention training. A non-concurrent multiple baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the effects of the training. The participants' safety responses were assessed using in situ assessments within two different situations (responding to a knock on the door of the participant's home and interaction by a stranger in public) and …

Micro-Etched Platforms For Thermal Inactivation Of Bacillus Anthracis And Bacillus Thuringiensis Spores, Leslie S. Hawkins Mar 2008

Micro-Etched Platforms For Thermal Inactivation Of Bacillus Anthracis And Bacillus Thuringiensis Spores, Leslie S. Hawkins

Theses and Dissertations

This research developed and applied microlithography techniques to etch microscope slide platforms in order to measure thermal inactivation of Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus anthracis spores, two closely related Bacillus species. B.t. is widely used as a surrogate for B.a. in response studies and in some field studies. This work addressed the previously identified problem of measuring both spore growth and spore thermal kill threshold using the traditional method of spreading a diluted spore solution on a plate. The micro-etched platforms forced spore separation thereby preventing neighbor growth from obscuring germination and initial vegetative growth measurements using a microscope. The technique …

The Study Of Compensatory Motions While Using A Transradial Prosthesis, Stephanie Lutton Carey Mar 2008

The Study Of Compensatory Motions While Using A Transradial Prosthesis, Stephanie Lutton Carey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Improvement of prostheses requires knowledge of how the body adapts. A transradial prosthesis without a dynamic wrist component may cause awkward compensatory motion leading to fatigue, injury or rejection of the prosthesis. This work analyzed the movements of shoulder, elbow and torso during four tasks: drinking from a cup, opening a door, lifting a box and turning a steering wheel.

The main purpose of this study was to determine if using a basic transradial prosthesis that lacks motion of the forearm and wrist would cause significant compensatory motion of the shoulder, elbow and torso during the tasks. The second purpose …

Glutamate Release In The Nucleus Accumbens Core Is Necessary For Heroin Seeking, Ryan T. Lalumiere, Peter W. Kalivas Mar 2008

Glutamate Release In The Nucleus Accumbens Core Is Necessary For Heroin Seeking, Ryan T. Lalumiere, Peter W. Kalivas

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Long-term changes in glutamate transmission in the nucleus accumbens core (NAcore) contribute to the reinstatement of drug seeking after extinction of cocaine self-administration. Whether similar adaptations in glutamate transmission occur during heroin and cue-induced reinstatement of heroin seeking is unknown. After 2 weeks of heroin self-administration and 2 weeks of subsequent extinction training, heroin seeking was induced by a noncontingent injection of heroin or by presentation of light/tone cues previously paired with heroin infusions. Microdialysis was conducted in the NAcore during reinstatement of heroin seeking in animals extinguished from heroin self-administration or in subjects receiving parallel (yoked) noncontingent saline or …
