The Weak Euler Scheme For Stochastic Delay Equations, Evelyn Buckwar, Rachel Kuske, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tony Shardlow May 2008

The Weak Euler Scheme For Stochastic Delay Equations, Evelyn Buckwar, Rachel Kuske, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tony Shardlow

Articles and Preprints

We study weak convergence of an Euler scheme for non-linear stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs) driven by multidimensional Brownian motion. The Euler scheme has weak order of convergence 1, as in the case of stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs) (i.e., without delay). The result holds for SDDEs with multiple finite fixed delays in the drift and diffusion terms. Although the set-up is non-anticipating, our approach uses the Malliavin calculus and the anticipating stochastic analysis techniques of Nualart and Pardoux.

Particle Composition And Size Distributions In And Around A Deep-Pit Swine Operation, Ames, Ia, Randal S. Marin, Philip J. Silva, Kori Moore, Mark Erupe, Vishal S. Doshi May 2008

Particle Composition And Size Distributions In And Around A Deep-Pit Swine Operation, Ames, Ia, Randal S. Marin, Philip J. Silva, Kori Moore, Mark Erupe, Vishal S. Doshi

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

The contribution of emissions from agricultural facilities is rapidly becoming a major concern for local and regional air quality. Characterization of particle properties such as physical size distribution and chemical composition can be valuable in understanding the processes contributing to emissions and ultimate fate of particulate matter from agricultural facilities. A measurement campaign was conducted at an Iowa, deep-pit, three-barn swine finishing facility to characterize near-source ambient particulate matter. Size-specific mass concentrations were determined using minivol samplers, with additional size distribution information obtain using optical particle counters. Particulate composition was determined via ion chromatographic analysis of the collected filters. A …

Confronting Childhood: Courts And The Contradictions Of Juvenile Justice, Clare F. Ryan May 2008

Confronting Childhood: Courts And The Contradictions Of Juvenile Justice, Clare F. Ryan

Political Science Honors Projects

For decades, the juvenile court has struggled to contain two contradictory, but necessary theories of justice. This project employs an in-depth, single case study of an urban juvenile court to demonstrate that contradictory juvenile justice models constrain court actors, while also giving them discretion. Individuals within the juvenile system hold ultimate responsibility for incorporating the rehabilitative juvenile model and the traditional criminal model into their roles and practices. Court actors structure interactions and goals based on attitudes regarding juvenile identity, self-identity, and blame in order to reconcile institutional ambiguities and produce fair and just results.

Children's Film As Social Practice, J. Zornado May 2008

Children's Film As Social Practice, J. Zornado

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Children's Film as Social Practice," J. Zornado argues that the animated feature is a genre distinct in its own right, and, although overlooked by film criticism up to now, deserves rigorous, scholarly attention. Zornado employs the term "iconology" to develop a foundation for a critical methodology indebted to Althusser, Foucault, and Lacan as well as contemporary film criticism. Iconology of the animated feature film is the study of the meaning systems of the dominant culture and the ways in which such systems are inscribed into all kinds of social practice geared, specifically, to seduce and inform the …

During the last several thousand years the semi‐arid, cold climate of the Russian steppe formed highly fertile soils rich in organic carbon and calcium (classified as Chernozems in the Russian system). Analysis of archived soil samples collected in Kemannaya Steppe Preserve in 1920, 1947, 1970, and fresh samples collected in 1998 indicated that the native steppe Chernozems, however, lost 17–28 kg m−2 of calcium in the form of carbonates in 1970–1998. Here we demonstrate that the loss of calcium was caused by fundamental shift in the steppe hydrologic balance. Previously unleached soils where precipitation was less than potential evapotranspiration are …

Somatostatin Regulates Raw 264.7 Cell Cytokine Release, Shilpa Swarup May 2008

Somatostatin Regulates Raw 264.7 Cell Cytokine Release, Shilpa Swarup

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Immigrant monocytes and resident macrophages propagate the vertebrate innate immune response through cell migration and cytokine production. Monocytes responding to inflammatory challenge migrate into tissues, and as resident macrophages, release a major pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor a (TNF-a). Macrophge cytokine synthesis is known to be under both negative and positive regulatory control. Recent studies have shown that somatostatin (SRIF) regulates monocyte and peritoneal macrophages. However, the effects of SRIF on RAW 264.7 cells, a transformed monocyte/macrophage cell line, have not been investigated. In the present study, SRIF effect on cytokine release in LPS stimulated RAW 264. 7 cells was …

The Increase Of Bipolar Disorder In Children And Adolescents, Kristen Wroblewski May 2008

The Increase Of Bipolar Disorder In Children And Adolescents, Kristen Wroblewski

Social Work Theses

This cluster study investigates the different possibilities that may have caused an increase in the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder in children and adolescents, including comparison to diagnosis in other countries. The same criteria for diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder for adults are used for children and adolescents, which may be misdiagnosed due to other disorders having the same characteristics, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In the cluster study, current and past students’ files at an alternative school were analyzed to determine whether the diagnosis had increased within the setting. Main findings were that Bipolar Disorder did increase over the …

Tradition Of African Story Telling: Oral Literature In The Homes And Schools (Pre-School/Kindergarten) Of Northern Malawi, Elisabeth Hangartner-Everts

College of Education and Human Services Student Publications

Writing about the story telling tradition in a limited area of the northern region of Malawi may seem far-fetched. Malawi is a small, poor country lying at the southern tip of the East African Rift Valley. The majority of people in the Western Developed World have never heard of this landlocked country in subequatorial Africa, commonly referred to by Malawians as “the warm heart of Africa.” (Catholic Relief Services, 2007, pp. 7-9). The few that are aware of its existence are international aid workers and some courageous eco-tourists crisscrossing the country by bike. One cannot ignore the dire poverty of …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Pancreatic cancer is a highly lethal malignancy with a dismal 5-year survival of less than 5%. The scarcity of early biomarkers has considerably hindered our ability to launch preventive measures for this malignancy in a timely manner. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), a 24-kDa glycoprotein, was reported to be upregulated nearly 27-fold in pancreatic cancer cells compared to normal ductal cells in a microarray analysis. Given the need for biomarkers in the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, we investigated the expression of NGAL in tissues with the objective of examining if NGAL immunostaining could be used to identify foci of pancreatic …

Cloning And Characterization Of A Caesalpinoid (Chamaecrista Fasciculate) Hemoglobin: The Structural Transition From A Nonsymbiotic Hemoglobin To A Leghemoglobin, Sabarinathan K. Gopalasubramaniam, Frank A. Kovacs, Fernando Violante-Mota, Paul Twigg, Raul Arrendondo-Peter, Gautam Sarath May 2008

Kovacs, Fernando Violante-Mota, Paul Twigg, Raul Arrendondo-Peter, Gautam Sarath

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Nonsymbiotic hemoglobins (nsHbs) and leghemoglobins (Lbs) are plant proteins that can reversibly bind O2 and other ligands. The nsHbs are hexacoordinate and appear to modulate cellular concentrations of NO and maintain energy levels under hypoxic conditions. The Lbs are pentacoordinate and facilitate the diffusion of O2 to symbiotic bacteroids within legume root nodules. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that all plant Hbs evolved from a common ancestor and that Lbs originated from nsHbs. However, little is known about the structural intermediates that occurred during the evolution of pentacoordinate Lbs from hexacoordinate nsHbs. We have cloned and characterized a …

Howling (And Bleeding) At The Moon: Menstruation, Monstrosity And The Double In The Ginger Snaps Werewolf Trilogy, Erin M. Flaherty May 2008

Howling (And Bleeding) At The Moon: Menstruation, Monstrosity And The Double In The Ginger Snaps Werewolf Trilogy, Erin M. Flaherty

Honors College Theses

In this essay, I explore the radical reframing of the traditional werewolf narrative with respect to the figure of the double and the abject female body in the Ginger Snaps werewolf trilogy. Notable theorists discussed herein include Barbara Creed, Carol Clover, Julia Kristeva, April Miller and Robin Wood.

Throughout both its folkloric and cinematic history, the creature of the werewolf has been constructed almost invariably as a male monster suffering within a Jekyll and Hyde-like narrative of the double. An otherwise exemplary member of Robin Wood’s society of surplus repression, the male lycanthrope is doomed to endure a monthly transformation …

Measurement Of Functional Residual Capacity Of The Lung Before And During Acute Lung Injury, Lara Brewer, Dinesh Haryadi, Joseph Orr May 2008

Measurement Of Functional Residual Capacity Of The Lung Before And During Acute Lung Injury, Lara Brewer, Dinesh Haryadi, Joseph Orr

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Background: We measured Functional Residual Capacity (FRC) of the lungs with a CO2 partial rebreathing technique, first in a mechanical lung analog, and then in mechanically ventilated animals before, during, and subsequent to an acute lung injury induced by oleic acid. We compared the FRC from partial CO2 rebreathing with those of a nitrogen washout reference method. Materials and Methods: Using an approved animal protocol, general anesthesia was induced and maintained with propofol in six swine (38.8-50.8 kg). In both the mechanical lung analog and the animals, a partial CO2 rebreathing monitor (NICO2, Respironics Inc., Wallingford, CT) was placed in …

Nonlinear Differential Equation Reconstruction And Taken’S Embedding Theorem, Keith H. Warnick, Charles R. Tolle, John W. James May 2008

Nonlinear Differential Equation Reconstruction And Taken’S Embedding Theorem, Keith H. Warnick, Charles R. Tolle, John W. James

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The considerable usefulness of differential equations in modeling physical system dynamics is limited by the ability to generate equations which accurately reproduce observed behavior. Especially in the case of nonlinear systems, finding such a set of differential equations can be a nontrivial problem. However, there are numerical methods for generating differential equations to model empirical data. This paper briefly outlines the trajectory method of Perona et al. for fitting a system of differential equations to time series data. The basis of the system of equations needed to optimize the model are given. Creation of an algorithm to implement the method …

Transient Physiological Responses Of Planting Frozen Root Plugs Of Douglas-Fir Seedlings, M. Anisul Islam, Douglass F. James, Kent G. Apostol, A. Kasten Dumroese

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Short-term physiological responses of planting frozen (FR) and rapidly thawed (TR) root plugs of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga rnenziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedlings were examined through time series (0 h, 6 h, 12 h, 1 day, 3 days, and 7 days) measurements in two separate experiments: 10 °C day : 6 °C night, RH 75% and 30 °C day : 20 °C night, RH 50%, respectively. Net photosynthesis, transpiration, shoot water potential, and root hydraulic conductance were lower in FR compared with TR seedlings under both growing conditions. Magnitude of difference in root hydraulic conductance was higher under warm-dry conditions. Chlorophyll fluorescence …
