Role Played By Serum, A Biological Cue, In The Adherence Of Enterococcus Faecalis To Extracellular Matrix Proteins, Collagen, Fibrinogen, And Fibronectin, Sreedhar R Nallapareddy, Barbara E Murray

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Most previous studies have found that Enterococcus faecalis isolates do not show significant adherence to fibronectin and fibrinogen.

METHODS: The influence of various conditions on E. faecalis adherence to extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins was evaluated using a radiolabeled-cell adherence assay.

RESULTS: Among the conditions studied, growth in 40% horse serum (a biological cue with potential clinical relevance) elicited adherence of all 46 E. faecalis strains tested to fibronectin and fibrinogen but not to elastin; adherence levels were independent of strain source, and adherence was eliminated by treating cells with trypsin. As previously reported, serum also elicited adherence to collagen. …

Effect Of Mulberry Lees Addition On Dough Mixing Characteristics And The Quality Of Mulberry Toast, Jean-Yu Hwang, Wen-Chieh Sung, Yung-Shin Shyu Jun 2008

Effect Of Mulberry Lees Addition On Dough Mixing Characteristics And The Quality Of Mulberry Toast, Jean-Yu Hwang, Wen-Chieh Sung, Yung-Shin Shyu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study evaluated the effects of 10%-30% mulberry lees addition on the dough mixing characteristics and the quality of mulberry toast. Farinogram shows the addition of 30% mulberry lees had the shortest departure time and weakest gluten strength. Peak viscosity, pasting temperature and final viscosity of Rapid Visco Analyser pasting profiles decreased as the addition of mulberry lees increase. Dough with 10% and 20% lees addition had a similar dough expansion rate to that of the control. However, the fermentation rate of the dough with 30% mulberry lees was obviously much slower. The ice-melting onset temperature, peak temperature and enthalpy …

Optimization Of Diffuser Valves, Chin-Tsan Wang, Pi-Cheng Chang, Chien-Cheng Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, the width of channel, D, and diffuser angle, , at given diffuser width whose value is 100 m will be studied for steady and unsteady flow conditions. By means of a series of numerical simulations, some findings for diffuser valve will be reported. The diffuser valve with a channel width of D = 300 m and diffuser angle =60º, is a better geometry because of its outstanding capability on suction production of net volume flow. Besides, the larger the Reynolds number is, the greater the suction amount of net volume flow will be. When the aspect ratio …

Assessing The Globally Averaged Sea Level Budget On Seasonal To Interannual Timescales, Josh K. Willis, D. Chambers, R Steven Nerem Jun 2008

Assessing The Globally Averaged Sea Level Budget On Seasonal To Interannual Timescales, Josh K. Willis, D. Chambers, R Steven Nerem

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Analysis of ocean temperature and salinity data from profiling floats along with satellite measurements of sea surface height and the time variable gravity field are used to investigate the causes of global mean sea level rise between mid-2003 and mid-2007. The observed interannual and seasonal fluctuations in sea level can be explained as the sum of a mass component and a steric (or density related) component to within the error bounds of each observing system. During most of 2005, seasonally adjusted sea level was approximately 5 mm higher than in 2004 owing primarily to a sudden increase in ocean mass …

The Impact Of The Swingshift Options School Alternative Educational Pathway On At-Risk Middle School Students' Transition To High School, Carol Rutan Smith Jun 2008

The Impact Of The Swingshift Options School Alternative Educational Pathway On At-Risk Middle School Students' Transition To High School, Carol Rutan Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this qualitative and quantitative study was to understand the perspectives of so-called at-risk middle school students who participated in an alternative mid-level program and the support that program might have provided in their transition into high school. The study gives voice to such students and sheds light on the type of programs and practices that reduce their risk for dropping out of school. Dynarski and Gleason (2002) reported that early adolescence is a period of both enormous opportunity and enormous risk for dropping out of school.

Participants were former students in the Swingshift Options School (SOS) program …

Bringing Down The Barriers Of Maggot Debridement Therapy, Kristine L. Gillard Jun 2008

Bringing Down The Barriers Of Maggot Debridement Therapy, Kristine L. Gillard

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this paper is to describe the rationale for Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT) and the development of a practice model. Chronic wounds are a growing problem in health care. Debridement of a wound is an essential component of wound healing as the presence of devitalized tissue can impede the healing process. Even with today's high-tech medicine there are still times we need to resort back to the basic and simple principles from nature that may help combat medical problems. The use of maggot larvae for wound debridement has made resurgence into wound management in the last 15 years. …

Zoonotic Disease Emergence : A Study Of Host-Pathogen-Ecosystem Dynamics, Laurie Jeanne Dizney Jun 2008

Zoonotic Disease Emergence : A Study Of Host-Pathogen-Ecosystem Dynamics, Laurie Jeanne Dizney

Dissertations and Theses

A growing body of work demonstrates that loss of biodiversity negatively impacts ecosystem functions. One function, or service, that biodiverse ecosystems provide is suppression of zoonotic diseases, which are defined as diseases carried by wildlife hosts that can spill over into human populations. Ebola, SARS, West Nile virus, Hantavirus, Avian Influenza and Lyme disease are just a few of the recently emerging zoonotic diseases. Disease suppression has been shown for Lyme disease by the dilution effect, whereby increasing species diversity decreases disease prevalence in the host populations. But does a dilution effect apply to other disease systems? To test this …

Negotiating Identity In The Transnational Imaginary Of Julia Alvarez's And Edwidge Danticat's Literature, Erik R. Kerby Jun 2008

Negotiating Identity In The Transnational Imaginary Of Julia Alvarez's And Edwidge Danticat's Literature, Erik R. Kerby

Theses and Dissertations

The increased contact between nations and cultures in the globalization of the twenty-first century requires an increased accountability for the ways in which individuals and countries negotiate these points of contact. New World and Caribbean Studies envision the cross-cultural and transnational encounters between indigenous, European, and African peoples as important contributors to a paradigm within which identity in relation offers an alternative to identities rooted in national and filial frameworks. Such frameworks limit the ability to construct identity without relying upon static representations of history, culture, and ethnicity that tend to privilege one group over another. In the literature of …

Beyond The Dutiful Daughter: An Examination Of The Role And Representation Of Daughters In The Renaissance, Lisa Emmeluth Hanes Jun 2008

Beyond The Dutiful Daughter: An Examination Of The Role And Representation Of Daughters In The Renaissance, Lisa Emmeluth Hanes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Women have long been termed "the weaker sex" in regards to physical ability, intellectual capacity, or moral character. Although this designation has since been proven to be false on every level, this categorization of females as lesser creatures than males is a stigma borne by women throughout history. This thesis has a narrow focus on the role and representation of aristocratic Early Modern daughters before they become wives and mothers, and on Sofonisba Anguissola, a female Renaissance painter, as a daughter in particular. An examination of Sofonisba primarily as a daughter, and only secondarily as a female artist, will help …

Hyporheic Exchange And Water Chemistry Of Two Arctic Tundra Streams Of Contrasting Geomorphology, Morgan J. Greenwald, William B. Bowden, Michael N. Gooseff, Jay P. Zarnetske, James P. Mcnamara, John H. Bradford, Troy R. Brosten Jun 2008

Hyporheic Exchange And Water Chemistry Of Two Arctic Tundra Streams Of Contrasting Geomorphology, Morgan J. Greenwald, William B. Bowden, Michael N. Gooseff, Jay P. Zarnetske, James P. Mcnamara, John H. Bradford, Troy R. Brosten

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The North Slope of Alaska’s Brooks Range is underlain by continuous permafrost, but an active layer of thawed sediments develops at the tundra surface and beneath streambeds during the summer, facilitating hyporheic exchange. Our goal was to understand how active layer extent and stream geomorphology influence hyporheic exchange and nutrient chemistry. We studied two arctic tundra streams of contrasting geomorphology: a high-gradient, alluvial stream with riffle-pool sequences and a low-gradient, peat-bottomed stream with large deep pools connected by deep runs. Hyporheic exchange occurred to ~50 cm beneath the alluvial streambed and to only ~15 cm beneath the peat streambed. The …

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Background

The lycophyte Selaginella moellendorffii is a vascular plant that diverged from the fern/seed plant lineage at least 400 million years ago. Although genomic information for S. moellendorffii is starting to be produced, little is known about basic aspects of its molecular biology. In order to provide the first glimpse to the epigenetic landscape of this early divergent vascular plant, we used the methylation filtration technique. Methylation filtration genomic libraries select unmethylated DNA clones due to the presence of the methylation-dependent restriction endonuclease McrBC in the bacterial host.

Results

We conducted a characterization of the DNA methylation patterns of the …

Learning, Living, And Leaving The Closet: Making Gay Identity Relational, Tony E. Adams Jun 2008

Learning, Living, And Leaving The Closet: Making Gay Identity Relational, Tony E. Adams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gay identity is inextricably tied to the metaphor of the closet. This tie is best exemplified by the act of "coming out of the closet," an act when a person discloses a gay identity to another, an act of self-identification and confession that others can motivate but never force, an act typically thought of as necessary, dangerous, and consequential, and an act often viewed as a discrete, linear process. Gay identity is also frequently framed as a self-contained trait thus making coming out a one-sided, personal affair.

In this project, I use autoethnography and narrative inquiry, life story interviews of …

The Chronicles Of X-Linked Spinal Muscular Atrophy: The Linkage, The Gene And The Smn Complex, Kemal O. Yariz

Open Access Dissertations

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive motor neuron disease. SMA is associated with homozygous mutations in the Survival of Motor Neuron gene I (SMN1). SMN protein does not appear to exist in cells in isolation but associates with several proteins to form a large multi-protein complex. The functions of SMN complex include assembly, metabolism and transport of diverse classes of ribonucleoproteins. X- Linked Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a rare congenital disorder characterized by multiple joint contractures. It is associated with hypotonia, areflexia, chest deformities and congenital joint contractures. A candidate interval was defined for XL-SMA in Xp11.3-Xq11.2 in …

Kinetic Studies Of The Oxidation Pathways Of Gaseous Elemental Mercury, Deanna L. Donohoue Jun 2008

Kinetic Studies Of The Oxidation Pathways Of Gaseous Elemental Mercury, Deanna L. Donohoue

Open Access Dissertations

Over the last decade our understanding of mercury cycling has dramatically changed. Evidence of rapid atmospheric oxidation has been observed in the Arctic, Antarctic, the MBL, coastal environments, saline lakes, and the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere. These results show that, Hg0, can undergo rapid gas-phase oxidation under standard atmospheric conditions. However, the mechanism and importance of this transformation is still unclear. The goal of this work was two-fold: to investigate of the kinetics of potential pathway for the gas phase oxidation of atmospheric mercury and to develop new laser based techniques, which can be employed for both laboratory and field studies …
