Populations of sturgeon across the globe are threatened due to unregulated harvest and habitat loss, and the status varies among species across North America. Ready access to viable and functional sperm would contribute to recovery programmes for these species. In this study, we examined the motility, viability (cell membrane integrity) of cryopreserved sperm from three North American acipenseriform species and fertilizing capacity. Milt samples were collected from captive shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum), wild paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) and pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) and cryopreserved using combinations of Modified Tsvetkova's (MT) extender, Original Tsvetkova's extender, and modified Hanks' balanced salt solution, along …

Optical And Electrochemical Molecular And Nanoscale Sensors For The Selective Detection Of Organophosphorus Based Pesticides, Chandrima De Aug 2008

Optical And Electrochemical Molecular And Nanoscale Sensors For The Selective Detection Of Organophosphorus Based Pesticides, Chandrima De

Masters Theses

Organophosphorus based pesticides are highly toxic and represent serious environmental concerns. These compounds tend to easily enter ground water and cause drastic pollution. The toxicity levels of the organophosphorus pesticides however are based on their structures, and hence methods for their selective detection are in high demand. The creation of new materials for sensing and actuation requires careful manipulation of the responsive units required to control analyte selectivity. We have successfully designed and synthesized a molecular sensor based on the family of stilbenes that not only can detect organophosphorus pesticides, but also distinguish between them. Four different pesticides have been …

In this mixed-method study the researcher also investigated whether there is a significant relationship between the Faith Development Interview (FDI), a qualitative measure of …

Ductile-Regime Machining Of Silicon Carbide And Quartz, Deepak Ravindra Aug 2008

Ductile-Regime Machining Of Silicon Carbide And Quartz, Deepak Ravindra

Masters Theses

Silicon carbide (SiC) and quartz are one of the advanced engineered ceramic materials designed to operate in extreme environments. One of the main reasons for the choice of these materials is due to its excellent electrical, mechanical and optical properties that benefit the semiconductor, MEMS and optoelectronic industry respectively. Manufacturing these materials is extremely challenging due to its high hardness, brittle characteristics and poor machinability. Severe fracture can result when trying to machine SiC and quartz due to its low fracture toughness. However, from past and current research efforts, it has been proven that ductile regime machining of brittle materials …

Effects Of Ziram On Tumor-Cell-Binding Capacity, Cell-Surface Marker Expression, And Atp Levels Of Human Natural Killer Cells, Thyneice R. Taylor, Margaret M. Whalen Aug 2008

Effects Of Ziram On Tumor-Cell-Binding Capacity, Cell-Surface Marker Expression, And Atp Levels Of Human Natural Killer Cells, Thyneice R. Taylor, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Human natural killer (NK) cells are central in immune defense against tumor and virally infected cells. Ziram is used as an accelerating agent in latex production and as an agricultural fungicide. Previous studies showed that continuous exposure to ziram inhibits NK lytic function. Additionally, they showed that a brief (1 h) exposure to ziram caused persistent loss of lytic function. This study examined whether decreases in lytic function were accompanied by decreases in the target-binding function of NK cells and found that some, but not all, exposures to ziram caused significant decreases in binding function. Ziram exposures that caused a …

The antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract obtained from Rauvolfia tetraphylla was tested against bacterial species of Escherichia coli, Streptococcus lactis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Alcaligenes faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, and fungal species of Fusarium oxysporum, Alternaria helianthii, Curvularia lunata, Aspergillus niger, and Penicillium spp. Better antimicrobial activity was observed when the extracts showed maximum activity against E. coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Alcaligenes faecalis. Among different fungi tested, A. niger and Penicillium spp were found to be more sensitive to crude extract when compared to others.

A Note On Variation Of Active Principles In Indian Medicinal Plants And Tim Formulations, Amritpal Singh Aug 2008

A Note On Variation Of Active Principles In Indian Medicinal Plants And Tim Formulations, Amritpal Singh

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The active principles or constituents (phytochemicals) in medicinal plants are chemical compounds known as secondary plant products. Some secondary products discourage herbivores; others inhibit bacterial or fungal pathogens. Active principles in medicinal plants may affect health, but are not-essential nutrients as our diet does not require them to sustain life in the same way as vitamins and minerals.

Analysis Of Inter-Species Relationships Of Ocimum Species Using Rapd Markers, R. Harisaranraj Et Al. Aug 2008

Analysis Of Inter-Species Relationships Of Ocimum Species Using Rapd Markers, R. Harisaranraj Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Genetic interrelationship of seven Ocimum species was estimated using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. The 15 selected RAPD primers out of 2 primers were amplified in all Ocimum species. O. basilicum has very close similarity (89%) with O. tenuiflorum and another two species of O. gratissimum and O. micranthum. Our results suggested that genetic relationships in Ocimum species using RAPD banding data may be useful for plant improvement and an efficient way to conserve genetic resources of Ocimum species, in addition to their effective medicinal uses.

Western Juniper (Juniperus Occidentalis) Ecology With An Exercise In Remote Sensing Techniques, Elizabeth A. Goralski Aug 2008

Western Juniper (Juniperus Occidentalis) Ecology With An Exercise In Remote Sensing Techniques, Elizabeth A. Goralski

Geography Masters Research Papers

Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis var. occidentalis) has been expanding its biogeographic range since the mid-1800's, resulting in decreased biodiversity, altered wildlife habitat, increased soil erosion, reduced stream flows and reduced forage production. The direct causes of western juniper aforestation are unclear but appear to be related to altered fire regimes, over grazing, and climatic shifts.

This study seeks to determine how Landsat images combined with Digital Orthoquads (DOQs) can be used to examine the geographic distribution of western juniper. Satellite imagery has yet to be applied to the large scale mapping of western juniper aforestation, resulting in the lack of …

It's Not Too Late: Applying Continuing Violation Theory To The Designation Of Critical Habitat Under The Esa, Amelia Boone Aug 2008

It's Not Too Late: Applying Continuing Violation Theory To The Designation Of Critical Habitat Under The Esa, Amelia Boone

Washington Law Review

The Endangered Species Act (ESA or the Act) requires the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (the Service) to designate critical habitat for every species it lists as threatened or endangered. Generally, the Service must designate critical habitat within one year of listing the species. If it cannot determine the species’ habitat at the moment of listing, it can issue a finding of “not determinable,” which gives it one additional year to study the species and its habitat needs. At the end of that additional year, the Service must list the critical habitat, using whatever data is available. On close …

Regulation Of The Bioavailability Of Thioredoxin In The Lens By A Specific Thioredoxin-Binding Protein (Tbp-2), Namal P.M. Liyanage, M. Rohan Fernando, Marjorie F. Lou Aug 2008

Regulation Of The Bioavailability Of Thioredoxin In The Lens By A Specific Thioredoxin-Binding Protein (Tbp-2), Namal P.M. Liyanage, M. Rohan Fernando, Marjorie F. Lou

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Thioredoxin (TRx) is known to control redox homeostasis in cells. In recent years, a specific TRx binding protein called thioredoxin binding protein-2 (TBP-2) was found in other cell types and it appeared to negatively regulate TRx bioavailability and thereby control TRx biological function. In view of the sensitivity of lens transparency to redox status, proper regulation of TRx bioavailability is of the utmost importance. This study was conducted to examine the presence and function of TBP-2 in human lens epithelial cells (HLE B3). We cloned human lens TBP-2 from a human cDNA library (GenBank accession number AY 594328) and showed …

Effective Single-Particle Order-N Scheme For The Dynamics Of Open Noninteracting Many-Body Systems, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Y. Dubi, M. Di Ventra Aug 2008

Effective Single-Particle Order-N Scheme For The Dynamics Of Open Noninteracting Many-Body Systems, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Y. Dubi, M. Di Ventra

Faculty Publications

Quantum master equations are common tools to describe the dynamics of many-body systems open to an environment. Due to the interaction with the latter, even for the case of noninteracting electrons, the computational cost to solve these equations increases exponentially with the partical number. We propose a simple scheme, which allows to study the dynamics of N noninteracting electrons taking into account both dissipation effects and Fermi statistics, with a computational cost that scales linearly with N. Our method is based on a mapping of the many-body system to a specific set of effective single-particle systems. We provide detailed …

Cycles Of Genocide, Stories Of Denial: Atom Egoyan's Ararat, Donna-Lee Frieze Aug 2008

Cycles Of Genocide, Stories Of Denial: Atom Egoyan's Ararat, Donna-Lee Frieze

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article focuses on Atom Egoyan’s Ararat and explores how, through a convoluted narrative structure, Egoyan grapples with denial of the Armenian Genocide and the consequences of those denials for present generations—both Turkish and Armenian—illuminated in the film as an extension of the genocide. Egoyan uses a film-within-a-film to move beyond a popular definition of genocide as mass killing alone and links the understanding of stories, truths, and perspectives in everyday life to the dehumanizing acts of genocide. Employing the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas’ ethical theory of the Other (the ethical) and philosophical understandings of ontology (dehumanization) to illuminate the genocide …

Influence Of Bioirrigation On Metal Distribution Within Burrows, Terri Shattuck Aug 2008

Influence Of Bioirrigation On Metal Distribution Within Burrows, Terri Shattuck

Masters Theses

Bioirrigation is the increase of solute transport resulting from introduction of oxygenated water from the surface into the more reduced environment deep within the burrow. Fe and Mn hydr-(oxides) accumulate on burrow margins in response to the oxygen flux into suboxic porewaters. This has been shown to trap trace metals (Harding and Risk, 1986; Tessier and Campbell, 1988; Tessier et al., 1979, 1982). The diagenesis, mobility, and transport of metals contribute to the bioavailability of metals in the environment possibly to the extent of harming ecosystems; especially in coastal areas with buried waste. This study assesses Fe and trace metal …

Blunted Cystine–Glutamate Antiporter Function In The Nucleus Accumbens Promotes Cocaine-Induced Drug Seeking, Kristen S. Kau, Aric Madayag, John R. Mantsch, Mark D. Grier, Omer Abdulhameed, David A. Baker

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Repeated cocaine alters glutamate neurotransmission, in part, by reducing cystine–glutamate exchange via system xc−, which maintains glutamate levels and receptor stimulation in the extrasynaptic compartment. In the present study, we undertook two approaches to determine the significance of plasticity involving system xc−. First, we examined whether the cysteine prodrug N-acetylcysteine attenuates cocaine-primed reinstatement by targeting system xc−. Rats were trained to self-administer cocaine (1 mg/kg/200 μl, i.v.) under extended access conditions (6 h/day). After extinction training, cocaine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) primed reinstatement was assessed in rats pretreated with N-acetylcysteine (0–60 mg/kg, i.p.) in the …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Biodegradation At A Former Tar Plant Site, Mihika Baruah Aug 2008

Laboratory Evaluation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Biodegradation At A Former Tar Plant Site, Mihika Baruah

All Theses

A former tar plant site in the southeastern
U.S. is one of hundreds across the country that is contaminated with polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The 2007
CERCLA Priority List of Hazardous Substances ranks PAHs as the eighth most
prominent hazardous substance at National Priority List sites. However, benzo(a)pyrene
is the only PAH that is regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, with a maximum
contaminant level of 0.2 µg/l. As with most sites, monitored natural
attenuation was the preferred bioremediation approach for this site, assuming
it could be shown that the PAHs were undergoing biodegradation. Field data from the site …

Stereotype Threat And Women's Perceptions Of Leadership Self-Efficacy, Phillip Lipka Aug 2008

Stereotype Threat And Women's Perceptions Of Leadership Self-Efficacy, Phillip Lipka

All Theses

The following research examined the effects of stereotype threat on women's leadership self-efficacy. Previous research has demonstrated that women's leadership aspirations are negatively affected by the presence of stereotype threat, and the current research served to expand on this literature by examining possible factors that could moderate women's vulnerability to this threat. It was proposed that women with a weaker adherence to sexist beliefs, less investment in gender ideals, and higher self-esteem would be less susceptible to stereotype threat and would perceive themselves as more capable leaders. Participants completed a survey that primed their gender identity in order to invoke …

Organic Management Of Mexican Bean Beetle (Epilachna Varivestis Mulsant) In Snap Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Tiffany L. Fess Aug 2008

Organic Management Of Mexican Bean Beetle (Epilachna Varivestis Mulsant) In Snap Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Tiffany L. Fess

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Various methods have been suggested to control or deter MBB from attacking bean crops, however conclusive data detailing the effectiveness of control methods and their effects on green bean yield are limited. Two separate experiments were performed to compare MBB management practices in snap bean crops and determine snap bean varieties with natural tolerance to MBB infestations. P. foveolatus in snap bean crops significantly (P<0.05) reduced the larval and adult MBB populations, while increasing the bean yield in optimal growing conditions. The use of row cover and staggering of planting date proved to be unsuccessful (P>0.05) increasing bean yield, however MBB larval, pupal, and adult populations were found to be different (P<0.05) when growing conditions wee optimal. When MBB populations were above the economic threshold (1--1.5 MBB larvae per plant) in the test, tolerance to MBB infestation was not observed (P>0.05) in any of the varieties studied.

Statewide Analysis Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis ) Population Status And Reach-Scale Conservation Priorities In West Virginia Watersheds, Jason W. Clingerman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture (EBTJV) was formed to implement range-wide strategies that sustain healthy, fishable brook trout populations. Hudy et al. (2006) recently completed a comprehensive analysis of eastern brook trout distributions representing a critical first step towards fully integrating brook trout conservation efforts in this region. This study was designed to supplement and complement existing data on brook trout distributions and status within West Virginia. We examined recently obtained data for the entire state to update the EBTJV distributional map published in Hudy et al. (2006). We then used fish sample data along with GIS-acquired landscape data …
