Development Of A Workflow For The Comparison Of Classification Techniques, Zanifa Omary Sep 2008

Development Of A Workflow For The Comparison Of Classification Techniques, Zanifa Omary

Dissertations

As the interest in machine learning and data mining springs up, the problem of how to assess learning algorithms and compare classifiers become more pressing. This has been associated with the lack of comprehensive and complete workflow depending on the project scale to provide guidance to its users. This means the success or failure of the project can be highly dependent on the person or team carrying it.

The standard practice adopted by many researchers and experimenters has been to follow steps or phases from existing workflows such as CRISP-DM, KDD and SASSEMMA. However, as machine learning and data mining …

Lis1 And Ndel1 Influence The Timing Of Nuclear Envelope Breakdown In Neural Stem Cells, Sachin Hebbar, Mariano T. Mesngon, Aimee M. Guillotte, Bhavim Desai, Ramses Ayala, Deanna S. Smith

Faculty Publications

Lis1 and Ndel1 are essential for animal development. They interact directly with one another and with cytoplasmic dynein. The developing brain is especially sensitive to reduced Lis1 or Ndel1 levels, as both proteins influence spindle orientation, neural cell fate decisions, and neuronal migration. We report here that Lis1 and Ndel1 reduction in a mitotic cell line impairs prophase nuclear envelope (NE) invagination (PNEI). This dyneindependent process facilitates NE breakdown (NEBD) and occurs before the establishment of the bipolar spindle. Ndel1 phosphorylation is important for this function, regulating binding to both Lis1 and dynein. Prophase cells in the ventricular zone (VZ) …

Myosin Ii Has Distinct Functions In Pns And Cns Myelin Sheath Formation, Haibo Wang, Ambika Tewari, Steven Einheber, James L. Salzer, Carmen V. Melendez-Vasquez

Publications and Research

The myelin sheath forms by the spiral wrapping of a glial membrane around the axon. The mechanisms responsible for this process are unknown but are likely to involve coordinated changes in the glial cell cytoskeleton. We have found that inhibition of myosin II, a key regulator of actin cytoskeleton dynamics, has remarkably opposite effects on myelin formation by Schwann cells (SC) and oligodendrocytes (OL). Myosin II is necessary for initial interactions between SC and axons, and its inhibition or down-regulation impairs their ability to segregate axons and elongate along them, preventing the formation of a 1:1 relationship, which is critical …

Terrestrial Subterranean Diversity In Non-Karstic Archaean Rock Terrains Terrestrial Subterranean Diversity In Non-Karstic Archaean Rock Terrains: Another Aladdin's Cave Opening In The Pilbara Region Of Western Australia, Peter Bell, Stefan Eberhard, T. Mould

KIP Abstracts

Until recently most terrestrial troglobites in Australia were known only from large (macro-) caves developed, predominantly, in karstified carbonate rocks, and less commonly from lava tubes developed in basalt. Excepting a few isolated earlier reports, and despite the accumulated evidence from other countries, there had been little searching for troglofauna in smaller (meso-) cave habitats developed in non-karstic rock terrains. This situation changed abruptly a few years ago when diverse communities of short range endemic terrestrial troglobites were discovered during routine stygofauna sampling in Tertiary channel iron deposits in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This discovery (described elsewhere this …

False Sanctuary: The Australian Antarctic Whale Sanctuary And Long-Term Stability In Antarctica, Donald K. Anton Sep 2008

False Sanctuary: The Australian Antarctic Whale Sanctuary And Long-Term Stability In Antarctica, Donald K. Anton

Cornell Law School Berger International Speaker Papers

The recent assertion of maritime adjudicative jurisdiction by Australian courts over a Japanese whaling company for acts contrary to Australian law in the Antarctic Southern Ocean is alarming. Private litigation, based on an internationally disputed claim to sovereignty over Antarctic territory and a further contested claim to an EEZ appurtenant to that territory, ought not to serve as a proxy for cooperative (and hopefully effective) international management of the Antarctic environment. The big danger is that if other states follow Australia's lead in claiming sovereign rights and exercising attendant jurisdiction the chances of natural resource over-exploitation and environmental harm in …

Real Time Signal Reconstruction From Spikes On A Digital Signal Processor, John G. Harris, Jie Xu, Manu Rastogi, Alexander Singh-Alvarado, Vaibhav Garg, José C. Principe, Kalyana Vuppamandla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There has been significant interest in encoding information into asynchronous timing events or spikes using models of biological neurons. It has been shown that these neurons can act as lossless encoders and software algorithms can reconstruct the encoded information. We present here, a real time implementation of a reconstruction algorithm on a TI TMS320C6713 DSK board. This implementation reconstructs the signal from a spike train which was encoded by a fabricated neuron chip. A signal to error ratio of 32 dB with an average firing rate of 8 KHz is obtained. We discuss the practical implementation, challenges and possible future …

Political Attitudes Vary With Physiological Traits, Douglas R. Oxley, Kevin Smith, John R. Alford, Matthew V. Hibbing, Jennifer L. Miller, Mario J. Scalora, Peter K. Hatemi, John R. Hibbing Sep 2008

Political Attitudes Vary With Physiological Traits, Douglas R. Oxley, Kevin Smith, John R. Alford, Matthew V. Hibbing, Jennifer L. Miller, Mario J. Scalora, Peter K. Hatemi, John R. Hibbing

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

Although political views have been thought to arise largely from individuals’ experiences, recent research suggests that they may have a biological basis. We present evidence that variations in political attitudes correlate with physiological traits. In a group of 46 adult participants with strong political beliefs, individuals with measurably lower physical sensitivities to sudden noises and threatening visual images were more likely to support foreign aid, liberal immigration policies, pacifism, and gun control, whereas individuals displaying measurably higher physiological reactions to those same stimuli were more likely to favor defense spending, capital punishment, patriotism, and the Iraq War. Thus, the degree …

Missense Mutation In Exon 2 Of Slc36a1 Responsible For Champagne Dilution In Horses, Deborah Cook, Samantha Brooks, Rebecca Bellone, Ernest Bailey Sep 2008

Missense Mutation In Exon 2 Of Slc36a1 Responsible For Champagne Dilution In Horses, Deborah Cook, Samantha Brooks, Rebecca Bellone, Ernest Bailey

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Champagne coat color in horses is controlled by a single, autosomal-dominant gene (CH). The phenotype produced by this gene is valued by many horse breeders, but can be difficult to distinguish from the effect produced by the Cream coat color dilution gene (CR). Three sires and their families segregating for CH were tested by genome scanning with microsatellite markers. The CH gene was mapped within a 6 cM region on horse chromosome 14 (LOD = 11.74 for theta = 0.00). Four candidate genes were identified within the region, namely SPARC [Secreted protein, acidic, cysteine-rich (osteonectin)], SLC36A1 (Solute Carrier 36 family …

The Biomechanics Of Ballistochory In Impatiens Pallida, Lua Del Campo Sep 2008

The Biomechanics Of Ballistochory In Impatiens Pallida, Lua Del Campo

Pomona Senior Theses

This research is an analysis of the explosive seed dispersal of Impatiens pallida fruit. Data was taken using high-speed video and analyzed using LoggerPro video analysis software. From the videos we discerned a qualitative model for dehiscence, a description of how the process unfolds, and from our data we deduced quantitative values for the velocity, momentum, and energy of the system. We were also able to glean a lower bound of Young’s modulus E of the fruit tissue. These results and the tools of analysis that generate them are the foundation for the development of a theoretical model of the …

Pulse-Based Signal Compression For Implanted Neural Recording Systems, John G. Harris, José C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez, Du Chen, Christy She Sep 2008

Pulse-Based Signal Compression For Implanted Neural Recording Systems, John G. Harris, José C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez, Du Chen, Christy She

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Today's implanted neural systems are bound by tight constraints on power and communication bandwidth. Most conventional ADC-based approaches fall into two categories. Either they transmit all of the information at the Nyquist rate but are ultimately limited to only a handful of channels due to communication bandwidth constraints. Or they perform spike detection on the front-end which allows a scale up to 100 or more channels but prevents the use of spike sorting on the backend. Spike sorting is an important step that provides a labeling to multiple neurons on each channel and further improves the accuracy of spike detection. …
