Fluorescence Sensor Array For Metal Ion Detection Based On Various Coordination Chemistries: General Performance And Potential Application, Zhuo Wang, Manuel A. Palacios, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

A sensor array containing 9 cross-reactive sensing fluorescent elements with different affinity and selectivity to 10 metal cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Al3+, Ga3+) is described. The discriminatory capacity of the array was tested at different ranges of pH and at different cation concentrations using linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Qualitative identification of cations can be determined with over 96% of accuracy in a concentration range covering 3 orders of a magnitude (5-5000 mu M). Quantitative analysis can be achieved with over 90% accuracy in the concentration range between 10 and 5000 mu M. The array performance …

This Essay examines the burgeoning psychological literature on happiness and hedonic adaptation (a person's capacity to preserve or recapture her level of happiness by adjusting to changed circumstances), bringing this literature to bear on the probability of pretrial settlement in civil litigation. The existing economic and behavioral models of settlement are incomplete because they do not incorporate the effect of adaptation on the sum for which a plaintiff is willing to accept an offer. When an individual first suffers a serious injury, she will likely predict that the injury will greatly diminish her future happiness. However, during the time that …

Parents and their biological children routinely cross state borders safe in the assumption that the parent-child relationship will be recognized wherever they go. The central issue raised in this Article is whether the law guarantees parents and their adopted children the same security if the parents are gay. This question is part of a broader debate about the obligation of states to recognize changes in family status effected under the laws of other states, such as same-sex marriages and migratory divorces. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common autosomal recessive disorder caused due to mutation/s in the CFTR gene. The most common mutation in CFTR worldwide is deltaF508 and cystic fibrosis genetic analysis consortium revealed that this mutation is responsible for approximately 66% of all CF chromosomes in the world. Studies looking at the DNA polymorphic haplotypes created by CF linked markers suggest that deltaF508 has a single origin as this mutation has been found associated exclusively with one marker haplotype. A range of proteins has been recognized as mediators/hypothetical receptors for hepatitis B virus (HBV), but the results are conflicting and inconclusive especially regarding their biological significance. This study was aimed at identifying a novel HBV-interacting protein which would provide a better understanding of its transport in blood, attachment, fusion and entry into hepatocytes. Serum samples positive for HBV confirmed by PCR were subjected to ammonium sulfate fractionations at 50, 75, 100%, saturation. PCR of each fraction demonstrated amplification of HBV in 100% fraction. Hypomycetes play a predominant role in forest litter degradation and there is a successional pattern of fungal flora. The primary colonizers on forest litter were mostly saprophytes. The secondary colonizers were those fungi with the ability to utilize lignin and cellulose for growth. In present study forests the role of Alternaria sp, Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium sp, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium solani, Mucor racemosus, Nigrospora spherical, Penicillium sp, Phoma sp and Trichoderma koningii are considered to be indispensable in litter degradation due to their high level of occurrence and greater survivability during the final stages of decomposition.

Madhya Pradesh sustains a very rich traditional medicinal plant wealth and inherits unique plant and animal communities. Due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity and indiscriminate exploitation of wild and natural resources, many valuable herbs like Abrus precatorious, Bauhinia variegta, Mucuna prurita, etc., are at the verge of extinction. The present paper enumerates status, conservation strategies and traditional uses of 80 plant species by the tribes of Madhya Pradesh. Preliminary Phytochemical Analysis Of Diospyros Species, Muthiah Maridass, S. Ghanthikumar, G. Raju

Diospyros species are valuable traditional medicines of Chinese herbal medicine, Tibetan medicine, and Ayurvedic medicine. Extractive values and qualitative identification of phytochemicals constituents of 29 Diospyros species was carried out. The methanolic fruit extract yielded maximum percentage of Diospyros malabarica (5.61%), and minimum percentage of Diospyros foliosa (1.25%). Fruits of Diospyros species showed the presence of bioactive constituents of alkaloids (82%), flavonoids (68.97%), tannin (55.17%), terpenoids (100%), and essential oils (100%) were detected in 29 Diospyros species.

Extrapleural Hydatid Disease Of Chest: A Case Of Recurrent Hydatid Disease, Ameer Ali Khowaja, Saqib Ali Gowani, Asmatullah Khan, Saulat H. Fatimi

Section of Cardiology

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation by a tapeworm of the genus Echinococcus. We present the case of 34-year-old female who complained of chest pain and had a past history of hydatid cyst resection four times in last 15 years. She was found to have extrapleural hyatid cysts of chest that were removed via thoracotomy. The patient fully recovered and experienced an uneventful follow-up.

Autism is a brain-based disorder that involves disrupted social interactions and communication development along with stereotyped patterns of behaviors and interests. Early detection and intervention is crucial for children diagnosed with autism. While current trends in research and detection are leaning toward earlier diagnosis of the disorder, limited research exists to support that earlier diagnoses are accurate. The present study utilized archival research and interviews to examine the accuracy of early diagnosis in children identified as autistic using DSM-IV criteria, standard screening and diagnostic tools and genetic testing. Purpose—To examine whether adaptations in physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) during weight loss were associated with future weight regain in overweight/obese, older women.

Research Methods and Procedures—Thirty-four overweight/obese (BMI=25–40 kg/m²), postmenopausal women underwent a 20-week weight loss intervention of hypocaloric diet with (low- or high-intensity) or without treadmill walking (weekly caloric deficit was ~11760 kJ), with a subsequent 12-month follow-up. RMR (via indirect calorimetry), PAEE (by RT3 accelerometer) and body composition (by DXA) were measured before and after intervention. Body weight and self-reported information on physical activity were collected after intervention, …

Mention the escalation of academic dishonesty and most of us working in education are immediately inclined to whistle for our moral high horse. But too much moralistic tongue-clicking can blind us to the ways in which we who constitute the system contribute to the very malady we lament. For if academic dishonesty is like a disease—and we repeatedly hear it described as an “epidemic”—we may all be carriers, even cultivators, of the virus that causes it. Let me explain.
