A transgenic, non-human mammalian animal is capable of expressing a heterologous gene for human or other recombinant physiologically functional fibrinogen holoprotein or individual subunit chain polypeptides thereofora modified or fusion fibrinogen in mammary glands of the animals and secreting the expressed product into a body fluid. Methodol ogy employing such a mammal yields recombinant physiologically functional fibrinogens, subunit chain polypeptides thereof, and modified or fusion fibrinogens.

A Content Analysis Of Client Hope In Psychotherapy Sessions, Stacie Lyn Cooper

The purpose of this study was to understand the role of hope and how it was expressed by diverse clients in the initial sessions of individual psychotherapy. Five adult clients representing a range of ages, gender, ethnicities, religious/spiritual orientations, and presenting issues were observed in archival videotapes of their 3rd or 5th psychotherapy sessions at two southern California community counseling clinics. Content analysis revealed that client expression of hopefulness during these sessions varied in quantity and quality. Socializing Youth For Adult Citizenship Roles: The Youth Citizenship Seminar, Melvin L. Musick

This study reports the results of an online questionnaire administered to a sample of adults who participated in a weeklong youth citizenship seminar at a private Christian university between 1986 and 2006. Using constructs put forth by Westheimer & Kahne (2004a), the study finds that former seminar participants demonstrate noteworthy levels of personally responsible and participatory citizenship, but less involvement in justiceoriented citizenship activities. Voting by respondents who were exposed to political issues or discussions held in their home was significant at the <0.05 level. Voting by respondents whose parents were active politically was significant at the <0.01 level. The study is responsive to concerns regarding effective strategies for increasing the probability of adolescents becoming involved citizens as adults. The study also informs the discussion on the developmental roots of civic involvement, and further elaborates the link between adolescent involvement in youth programs and adult civic behavior.

Pastors tend to hover over the churches and many of the functions of ministry within the local church. Church members demonstrate little personal spiritual growth or activity in witnessing to their communities. A specific church in New York City will be selected as a laboratory for experimentation with the premise that a non-pastor dependent church can achieve better than average growth.

This exploratory and descriptive study addresses depression as experienced by a sample of Hispanic pastors' wives Studies on Seventh-day Adventist ministers have shown they are vulnerable to depression and Hispanic ministers’ wives are not exempt from this reality. Women tend to be more prone than men to depression, because of biological, social, and cultural factors. In addition, ministers’ wives experience other church-related pressures that increase depression.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are fatal neurodegenerative diseases that include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy and sheep scrapie. TSE disease pathology and mechanisms within the central nervous system (CNS) of an infected host largely remains unclear. At the cellular level, the uptake of protease resistant prion protein (PrP-res), which strongly correlates with infectivity and is a valid marker for TSE infection, is one of the earliest events that must occur during TSE infection. I investigated the processes of establishment of the cottonwood Populus trichocarpa T.&G. along the pristine, 5th order, wandering floodplain of the gravel-bed Flathead River, Montana, USA. The focus of my research was to determine the mechanisms explaining successful recruitment on recently formed, unvegetated bars, covering a range of spatial scales from within-bar (~ 1 to 10 m) to across-reach (~ 1 to 10 km). Results are based on field observations and measurements over three growth seasons (2005 through 2007), as well as outdoor and laboratory experiments.

Protected areas serve to conserve species, habitats, and ecological processes. However, biological systems within even large parks are increasingly affected by outside perturbations. The Olympic marmots (Marmota olympus) are ground-dwelling squirrel that inhabit high-elevation meadows almost exclusively within Olympic National Park Despite this protection, anecdotal reports in the 1990's of disappearances from historically occupied locations suggested that the species was in decline. I used demographic monitoring, habitat surveys, and non-invasive genetic sampling to evaluate population status of the species and consider the effects of several possible stressors. Females in nearly all sexually reproducing taxa mate with multiple males. In these species, male fitness is dependent on traits used during both the pre-copulatory processes influencing mate acquisition, as well as the post-copulatory processes influencing fertilization. However, few studies have simultaneously examined pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection within a particular species, and we therefore have little understanding of how these processes interact to determine male reproductive success.

Flooding is the dominant factor structuring riparian plant communities along large, low elevation streams, but it is less clear what role flooding plays in the structure and composition of riparian plant communities along mountain streams. In the first part of this study, I examined the influence of four environmental variables (flood frequency, microtopography, light availability, and soil texture) and spatial heterogeneity on riparian plant community structure in seven study areas along mountain streams in western Montana, USA. DNA is constantly exposed to oxidants which can lead to nucleobase damage. Chromium is of particular interest as a DNA oxidant because of its abundance in the environment and the ease with which it can be taken into a cell. Chromate, Cr(VI), ions are taken up by a cell through relatively non-selective anion channels which normally regulate uptake of phosphate and sulfate ions. Once in the cell, chromate ions are reduced by intracellular reductants such as ascorbate and glutathione to Cr(III). We postulated that HIV-1 Tat protein can alter the expression of specific tight-junction proteins and disturb the blood retinal barrier, and contributes to HIV trafficking into the eyes. This study is to determine the effects of HIV-1 Tat proteins on the barrier function and tight-junction protein expression of retinal pigment epithelial cell (RPE). The literature is full of examples detailing ecological impacts of invasive species and predictions of which and where species will invade next. Many fewer examples of effective prevention strategies are known. Prevention of aquatic invasive species (AIS) to inland lakes should be easily established because most AIS are initially introduced into watersheds by recreational boating activities, especially in North America. The Watershed Management Plan for Otsego Lake, a central New York glacial lake, provides for prevention of AIS via a stringent boat inspection and washing program (BIP).
