The Effect Of Chloride Ion On Heavy Metal Partitioning And Transport In An Urban Watershed: Patroon Creek, Albany, Ny, Charles Begeal Jan 2008

The Effect Of Chloride Ion On Heavy Metal Partitioning And Transport In An Urban Watershed: Patroon Creek, Albany, Ny, Charles Begeal

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Road deicing salt use in the United States has increased extensively over the last 60 years with urbanization and a need to keep roads safe during winter months. This increase has caused an overall increase in the base concentration of Cl- in streams near roads that receive deicing salts. Many of these streams are in the Northeast United States where extensive industrialization has led to the pollution of soils, sediments, and surface waters by heavy metals. This study addresses the effect that chloride concentration has on fluvial transport and partitioning of heavy metals between the dissolved and suspended phases in …

Pregnancy, Medicaid, State Regulation, And The Production Of Unruly Bodies, Khiara M. Bridges Jan 2008

Pregnancy, Medicaid, State Regulation, And The Production Of Unruly Bodies, Khiara M. Bridges

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This paper represents a concretization of thoughts generated during a year and a half of anthropological fieldwork in the obstetrics clinic of a large, public hospital located on the . As a condition of receipt of Medicaid coverage of prenatal care expenses, poor, uninsured pregnant women are compelled to meet with a battery of professionalsnamely nutritionists, social workers, health educators, and financial officerswho inquire into areas of women's lives that frequently exceed the realm of the medical. This paper argues that, as a result, Medicaid mandates an intrusion into women's private lives and produces pregnancy as an opportunity for state …

Correlation Of Three Immunohistochemically Detected Markers Of Neuroendocrine Differentiation With Clinical Predictors Of Disease Progression In Prostate Cancer, Hammad Ather, Farhat Abbas, Nuzhat Faruqui, Mohammad Israr, Shahid Pervez

Section of Urology

Background: The importance of immuno-histological detection of neuroendocrine differentiation in prostatic adenocarcinoma with respect to disease at presentation and Gleason grade is gaining acceptance. There is limited literature on the relative significance of three commonly used markers of NE differentiation i.e. Chromogranin A (CgA), Neuron specific enolase (NSE) and Synaptophysin (Syn). In the current work we have assessed the correlation of immuno-histological detection of neuroendocrine differentiation in prostatic adenocarcinoma with respect to disease at presentation and Gleason grade and to determine the relative value of various markers.
Materials and Methods: Consecutive samples of malignant prostatic specimens (Transurethral resection of prostate …

Molecular Analysis Of Voltage-Gated A-Na+ Channel Toxin Binding Site 3 To Determine Key Residues That Confer Resistance To A-Scorpion Toxin, Anas Souqiyyeh Jan 2008

Molecular Analysis Of Voltage-Gated A-Na+ Channel Toxin Binding Site 3 To Determine Key Residues That Confer Resistance To A-Scorpion Toxin, Anas Souqiyyeh

Honors Capstones

Voltage-gated Na+ channels (Nav1.2) which are proteins that posses 4 (I-IV) domains and six transmembrane (S1-S6) helices in each domain display abnormally slowed fast inactivation when an ?-scorpion toxin binds to it. However, voltage gated Na+ channels of the Mesobuthus martensii Karsch (MmK) scorpion that produces a-scorpion toxins are resistant to their toxins. The previously described ?-toxin binding site 3 of the MmK voltage-gated Na+ channels were examined by a comparative method using an alignment of many sodium channel protein sequences (multi-alignment) generated using the rat Nav1.2 ?-toxin sequence of binding site 3 as a template for the alignment. The …

Energy, Entropy And The Environment (How To Increase The First By Decreasing The Second To Save The Third), D. P. Sheehan Jan 2008

Energy, Entropy And The Environment (How To Increase The First By Decreasing The Second To Save The Third), D. P. Sheehan

Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship

Energy is the lifeblood of civilization, but inexpensive, high energy density sources are rapidly being depleted and their exploitation is severely degrading the environment. This paper explores a radical solution to this energy-environmental dilemma. In the last 10–15 years, the universality of the second law of thermodynamics has fallen into serious theoretical doubt [1–3].Should it prove experimentally violable, this would open the door to a nearly limitless reservoir of ubiquitous, clean, recyclable energy. If economical, it could precipitate paradigm shifts in energy production, utilization and politics. In this paper, recent challenges to the second law are reviewed, with focus given …

The findings are based on interviews I conducted on campus with Illinois Wesleyan staff who were deemed likely to have access to data and also on inventories performed by American College and University President's Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) signatory institutions.

The Effects Of Cardiorespiratory Fitness On Behavioral And Neuroelectric Indices Of Cognition In Young Adults, Elizabeth K. Mraz '08 Jan 2008

The Effects Of Cardiorespiratory Fitness On Behavioral And Neuroelectric Indices Of Cognition In Young Adults, Elizabeth K. Mraz '08

Honors Projects

Effects ofcardiorespiratory fitness on cognition were assessed for 72 young adults. Participants completed an executive control task while behavioral and neuroelectric indices ofcognition were obtained. Behavioral (reaction time, response accuracy) and neuroelectric (P3 amplitude, P3 latency) measures ofcognitive function and processing were examined in relation to fitness to determine the unique influence offitness on cognition. A graded maximal exercise test was used to measure fitness by assessing maximal oxygen consumption. Higher fitness was associated with a smaller difference in P3 amplitude across expectancies as well as a longer P3 latency at the central midline site, suggesting a relationship between fitness …

The "Evolution" Of Media: The Influence Of A Media Literacy Campaign On Self Esteem And Body Image, Vasiliki D. Dremonas '08 Jan 2008

The "Evolution" Of Media: The Influence Of A Media Literacy Campaign On Self Esteem And Body Image, Vasiliki D. Dremonas '08

Honors Projects

For decades, society has criticized the media for instigating many of the physical, social, and psychological maladies that affect females of all ages. However, recent advertising approaches, namely the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, endeavor to sell products by responsibly endorsing attainable beauty ideals. The present study seeks to empirically evaluate whether campaign efforts like Dove's are successful at reducing negative female body image, or whether they are instead counterproductive to their goal due to what social psychologists term "sleeper effect" processes. 102 female undergraduates were either exposed to the Dove commercial Evolution in its entirety, Evolution in part, or …

Behavioral Responses To Predictable And Unpredictable Competitors And C-Fos Expression In The Amygdala And Nucleus Accumbens, Jennifer Schnupp '08 Jan 2008

Behavioral Responses To Predictable And Unpredictable Competitors And C-Fos Expression In The Amygdala And Nucleus Accumbens, Jennifer Schnupp '08

Honors Projects

The present study examined the effects of the presence of a competitoron the behavior of individual rats in a foraging paradigm as was done in Farmer-Dougan, Dougan, Knight, Toelle, and Chandrashekar (2007). Rats foraged for food in a large open field, with pellets delivered in one patch on a Variable Interval schedule (VI). During alone conditions, each rat foraged by itself. During the unpredictable competitor condition, a competitor rat was introduced on an unpredictable basis on the last day of foraging. In this condition, the rats displayed avoidance behavior and were significantly undermatching as was observed in Farmer-Dougan et al. …

Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination And Its Potential Effects On Eggshell Characteristics Of Dickcissels (Spiza Americana), Bridget Wall '08 Jan 2008

Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination And Its Potential Effects On Eggshell Characteristics Of Dickcissels (Spiza Americana), Bridget Wall '08

Honors Projects

Dickcissels (Spiza americana) are small, sparrow-like songbirds that nest in grasslands in the U.S. and winter in Venezuela. Fanners in Venezuela intentionally spray dickcissel flocks with organochlorine (DC) and other illegal pesticides in an attempt to kill them when they feed in both rice and sorghum fields. Previous studies have shown that organochlorine (DC) pesticide' contaminants (e.g., DDT) have significantly reduced eggshell thickness in eagles and falcons.. Although DDT was banned in the United States more than twenty years ago, DC compounds and their metabolites still persist in wildlife, possibly resulting in reduced reproductive success and in disrupted endocrine systems …

Coelomogenesis And Nutrition Of Clonally Produced Asteroid Larvae, William Jaeckle Jan 2008

Coelomogenesis And Nutrition Of Clonally Produced Asteroid Larvae, William Jaeckle

Scholarship

Asexual reproduction by planktotrophic larvae of asteroids is an unusual life history strategy exhibited by several species in the families Luididae, Oreasteridae, Ophidiasteridae, and Asteriidae. Larvae of the former three families reproduce asexually in the field, while the asteriid Pisaster ochraceus has produced clones when larvae are reared in the laboratory. Our knowledge of the processes involved in larval cloning and the biology of the developing clone is fragmentary in nature. We used light, electron, and scanning laser confocal microscopy to study clones that develop through paratomy of the posterolateral larval arms. The archenteron forms by a modified form of …

Distribution Of Bipinnaria And Pilidium In Relation To Physical Structure And Uv-B Light In The Water Column Off Anvers Island, Antarctica, William Jaeckle

Scholarship

Feeding larvae of Antarctic bottom invertebrates have proven to be scarce in the plankton and consequently our knowledge of their ecology is limited. We collected bipinnaria larvae assignable to the genus Odontaster and several types of pilidium larvae of nemertean worms in quantitative net tows taken during the austral spring and summer 1997-1998 and considered their distribution with respect to the density stratification of the water column and the potential exposure to UV-B (λ = 308 nm). The average number of pilidium and bipinnaria larvae in the upper 40 m of the water column was 0.5 ± 1.0 per m3 …

Family Experience With Eating Disorders Scale: Exploring Reliability And Validity And Evaluating The Clinical Utility Of Its Use In Treatment, Kathleen M. Hoff

Honors Projects

The family plays a significant role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders, and may be equally influential in recovery. The deliberate use of an instrument that addresses the perceived family environment is useful in engaging the family in treatment and enhancing treatment outcomes. The Family Experience with Eating Disorders Scale (FEEDS) was used in this study because it addresses the psychometric deficits common in existing general family assessment instruments and captures family dynamics specific to eating disorders. The 53-item FEEDS was design to illicit the parental perception of the family environment and assesses family dynamics specific to eating …
