Electrochemical Method For Detecting Water Born Pathogens, Ingrid Fritsch, Robert Beitle Jr., Zoraida P. Aguilar Nov 2008

Electrochemical Method For Detecting Water Born Pathogens, Ingrid Fritsch, Robert Beitle Jr., Zoraida P. Aguilar

Patents Granted

A novel surface immobilization electrochemical assay that allows for rapid, accurate and highly sensitive detection of microorganisms and biological molecules is described. Known surface immobilization methods are utilized to bind an analyte to a surface. A binding material with a covalently attached electroactive complex generates electrical current in the presence of analyte. An electrode is used to detect the current that is directly related to the concentration of analyte. The invention is especially suitable for detection of Cryptosporidium parvum.

Identification Of Some Strains Of Dinoflagellates Based On Morphology And Molecular Analysis, Hikmah Thoha

Makara Journal of Science

Dinoflagellates are the important primary producers in aquatic environments. In oceans, they play interesting role in ecological functions such as red tide forming organisms, symbiont of coral reef or sea anemone and DSP (Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning) or PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) producing organisms. Morphology and molecular analysis of dinoflagellates were conducted on November 2002 to March 2003. The phylogenetic studies based on 18S rDNA analyses, sequence have begun to appear more frequently in the literature, as attention has turned to relationships within the major eukaryotic lineages, particular importance for the taxonomy of the armored and unarmored genera of dinoflagellates (Gyrodinium …

Isolation and Cloning of cDNA Fragment of Gene Encoding for Multidrug Resistance Associated Protein from M. affine. M. affine can grow well in acid soil with high level of soluble aluminum. One of the important proteins in the detoxifying xenobiotic stress including acid and Al stresses is a multidrug resistance associated protein (MRP) encoded by mrp gene. The objective of this research is to isolate and clone the cDNA fragment of MaMrp encoding MRP from M. affine. By reverse transcription, total cDNA had been synthesized from the total RNA as template. The fragment of cDNA MaMrp had been successfully isolated …

Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer Cells Acquire The Complete Steroidogenic Potential Of Synthesizing Testosterone From Cholesterol., Paulette R. Dillard, Ming-Fong Lin, Shafiq A. Khan Nov 2008

Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer Cells Acquire The Complete Steroidogenic Potential Of Synthesizing Testosterone From Cholesterol., Paulette R. Dillard, Ming-Fong Lin, Shafiq A. Khan

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

The proliferation and differentiation of normal prostate epithelial cells depends upon the action of androgens produced by the testis. Prostate cancers retain the ability to respond to androgens in the initial stages of cancer development, but progressively become independent of exogenous androgens in advanced stages of the disease while maintaining the expression of functional androgen receptor (AR). In the present study, we have determined the potential of prostate cancer cells to synthesize androgens from cholesterol which may be involved in intracrine regulation of AR in advanced stages of the disease. Established androgen-independent prostate cancer cell lines, PC3 and DU145 cells, …

Dmitri Shalin Interview With Rodney Stark About Erving Goffman Entitled "Goffman Was Trying To Get Away With The Descriptions Of Those Fairly Sane People As He Laid Out His Notion Of Mental Illness", Rodney Stark

Bios Sociologicus: The Erving Goffman Archives

This interview with Rodney Stark, Distinguished Professor of the Social Sciences and Co- Director of the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University, was recorded over the phone on November 25, 2008. Dmitri Shalin transcribed the interview, after which Dr. Stark edited the transcripts and gave his approval for posting the present version in the Erving Goffman Archives. Breaks in the conversation flow are indicated by ellipses. Supplementary information appears in square brackets. Undecipherable words and unclear passages are identified in the text as “[?]”. The interviewer’s questions are shortened in several places.

Design And Testing Of A Pumpless Microelectromechanical System Nanoinjector, Quentin Theodore Aten Nov 2008

Design And Testing Of A Pumpless Microelectromechanical System Nanoinjector, Quentin Theodore Aten

Theses and Dissertations

A deeper understanding of human development and disease is made possible partly through the study of genetically modified model organisms, such as the common mouse (Mus musculus). By genetically modifying such model organisms, scientists can activate, deactivate, or highlight particular characteristics. A genetically modified animal is generated by adding exogenous (foreign) genetic material to one or more embryonic cells at their earliest stages of development. Frequently, this exogenous genetic material consists of specially engineered DNA, which is introduced into a fertilized egg cell (zygote). When successfully introduced into the zygote, the exogenous DNA will be incorporated into the …

The Promise Of Academic Learning Time In A Dose-Response Model Of Early Reading Achievement, Benjamin Heuston Nov 2008

The Promise Of Academic Learning Time In A Dose-Response Model Of Early Reading Achievement, Benjamin Heuston

Theses and Dissertations

Reading has long been acknowledged to be a critical skill that is best acquired early in life. According to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reports, American public school children continue to struggle to master the basics of reading. Although federal funding in real dollars has increased consistently over time, reading scores have not followed suit, suggesting that fiscal resources have not been applied successfully to the variables that are directly related to reading acquisition and achievement. The current state of affairs therefore suggests the need for identifying a fiscally-targetable, instructionally-relevant variable with a direct, causal relationship …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Temperature-Responsive Dendritic Peg-Pdlla Star Polymers For Drug Delivery, Arunvel Kailasan Nov 2008

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Temperature-Responsive Dendritic Peg-Pdlla Star Polymers For Drug Delivery, Arunvel Kailasan

Theses and Dissertations

This study describes a novel thermoresponsive dendritic polyethylene glycol-poly(D, L-lactide) (PEG-PDLLA) core-shell nanoparticle with potential for drug delivery and controlled release. A series of dendritic PEG-PDLLA nanoparticles were synthesized through conjugation of PEG to Starburst™ polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer G3.0 and subsequent ring-opening polymerization of DLLA, in which PEG chain length (i.e., MW=1500, 6000 or 12000 Dalton) was varied; however, the feeding molar ratio of DLLA monomers to the overall PEG repeat units on the dendrimer surface was kept at 1:1. Linear PEG-PDLLA copolymers were also syntheiszed under the same condition and used as control. According to our results, dendritic PEG-PDLLA …

My Enemy’S Enemy Is My Friend: Why Holding The Same Negative Attitudes Of Others Promotes Closeness, Jonathan R. Weaver Nov 2008

My Enemy’S Enemy Is My Friend: Why Holding The Same Negative Attitudes Of Others Promotes Closeness, Jonathan R. Weaver

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Holding the same negative, as compared to positive, attitudes about a third party has been shown to predict increased liking for a future interaction partner (Bosson, Johnson, Niederhoffer, & Swann, 2006). The current work extended past research by examining two possible mediators of this effect: perceptions of "knowing" the future interaction party, and state self-esteem. Participants learned that they held the same positive or negative attitude of a professor with a future interaction partner, and then rated their feelings of "knowing" their partner, their own state self-esteem, and the closeness they felt to their future interaction partner. It was predicted …
