American Woodcock Population Status, 2008, Thomas R. Cooper, Keri Parker, Rebecca D. Rau
American Woodcock Population Status, 2008, Thomas R. Cooper, Keri Parker, Rebecca D. Rau
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Singing-ground Survey data for 2008 indicated that the numbers of displaying American woodcock (Scolopax minor) in the Central Region declined 9.2 % from 2007; however, the Eastern Region was unchanged. There was no significant 10-year trend for woodcock heard in the Eastern Region during 1998-2008, while there was a significant decline in the Central Region. This represents the fifth consecutive year that the 10-year trend estimate did not indicate a significant decline in the Eastern Region, while it marks the first time since 2003 that the Central Region has had a declining 10-year trend. There were long-term (1968-08) …

Ecological Factors Associated With West Nile Virus Transmission, Northeastern United States, Heidi E. Brown, James E. Childs, Maria A. Diuk-Wasser, Durland Fish
Ecological Factors Associated With West Nile Virus Transmission, Northeastern United States, Heidi E. Brown, James E. Childs, Maria A. Diuk-Wasser, Durland Fish
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Since 1999, West Nile virus (WNV) disease has affected the northeastern United States. To describe the spatial epidemiology and identify risk factors for disease incidence, we analyzed 8 years (1999–2006) of county-based human WNV disease surveillance data. Among the 56.6 million residents in 8 northeastern states sharing primary enzootic vectors, we found 977 cases. We controlled for population density and potential bias from surveillance and spatial proximity. Analyses demonstrated significant spatial spreading from 1999 through 2004 (p2 = 0.16). A significant trend was apparent among increasingly urban counties; county quartiles with the least (0.75 cases/100,000 residents) than counties with the …
Myenteric Neurons Of The Ileum That Express Somatostatin Are A Target Of Prion Neuroinvasion In An Alimentary Model Of Sheep Scrapie, David A. Schneider, Huijun Yan, Lindsay M. Fry, Janet Alverson, Stephen N. White, Katherine I. O'Rourke
O'Rourke
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Neuroinvasion of the enteric nervous system by prions is an important step in dissemination to the brain, yet very little is known about the basic process of enteric neuroinvasion. Using an alimentary model of neonatal disease transmission, neuroinvasion by scrapie prions in the ileum of lambs was detected by immunohistochemical staining for the disease-associated form of the prion protein, PrPSc. Odds ratios (OR) were determined for the frequency of PrPSc staining within enteric somata categorized by plexus location (myenteric, submucosal) and neurochemical staining (PGP 9.5, neural nitric oxide synthase, somatostatin, substance P, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide). PrP …
Prion Gene (Prnp) Haplotype Variation In United States Goat Breeds, Stephen N. White, Lynn Herrmann-Hoesing, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Daniel Waldron, Joan Rowe, Janet Alverson
Prion Gene (Prnp) Haplotype Variation In United States Goat Breeds, Stephen N. White, Lynn Herrmann-Hoesing, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Daniel Waldron, Joan Rowe, Janet Alverson
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Scrapie eradication efforts cost 18 million dollars annually in the United States and rely heavily upon PRNP genotyping of sheep. Genetic resistance might reduce goat scrapie and limit the risk of goats serving as a scrapie reservoir, so PRNP coding sequences were examined from 446 goats of 10 breeds, 8 of which had not been previously examined at PRNP. The 10 observed alleles were all related to one of two central haplotypes by a single amino acid substitution. At least five of these alleles (M142, R143, S146, H154, and K222) have been associated with increased incubation time or decreased …

United States Army: Publications
Only a limited number of complete mitochondrial genome sequences belonging to Native American haplogroups were available until recently, which left America as the continent with the least amount of information about sequence variation of entire mitochondrial DNAs. In this study, a comprehensive overview of all available complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genomes of the four pan-American haplogroups A2, B2, C1, and D1 is provided by revising the information scattered throughout GenBank and the literature, and adding 14 novel mtDNA sequences. The phylogenies of haplogroups A2, B2, C1, and D1 reveal a large number of sub-haplogroups but suggest that the ancestral Beringian …

Analysis Of The Nucleotide Sequence Of The Guinea Pig Cytomegalovirus (Gpcmv) Genome, Mark R. Schleiss, Alistair Mcgregor, K Yeon Choi, Shailesh V. Date, Xiaohong Cui, Michael Mcvoy
Pediatrics Publications
In this report we describe the genomic sequence of guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) assembled from a tissue culture-derived bacterial artificial chromosome clone, plasmid clones of viral restriction fragments, and direct PCR sequencing of viral DNA. The GPCMV genome is 232,678 bp, excluding the terminal repeats, and has a GC content of 55%. A total of 105 open reading frames (ORFs) of > 100 amino acids with sequence and/or positional homology to other CMV ORFs were annotated. Positional and sequence homologs of human cytomegalovirus open reading frames UL23 through UL122 were identified. Homology with other cytomegaloviruses was most prominent in the central …
Li- And B-Decorated Cis-Polyacetylene: A Computational Study, S. Li, Puru Jena
Li- And B-Decorated Cis-Polyacetylene: A Computational Study, S. Li, Puru Jena
Physics Publications
By using density functional theory and the generalized gradient approximation, we show that Li-decorated cis-polyacetylene meets some of the requirements of an ideal hydrogen storage material. Unlike Ti-doped cis-polyacetylene, Li resists clustering and can reversibly store up to 10.8 wt %hydrogen in molecular form. However, molecular dynamics simulations show that Li can retain hydrogen only at cryogenic temperatures. On the other hand, B-doped cis-polyacetylene can store up to 7.5 wt % hydrogen, but it binds to hydrogen too strongly to be suitable for room temperature applications. The results are compared to those in Ti-doped cis-polyacetylene.

Cpg Island Density And Its Correlations With Genomic Features In Mammalian Genomes, Leng Han, Bing Su, Wen-Hsiung Li, Zhongming Zhao
Psychiatry Publications
Background CpG islands, which are clusters of CpG dinucleotides in GC-rich regions, are considered gene markers and represent an important feature of mammalian genomes. Previous studies of CpG islands have largely been on specific loci or within one genome. To date, there seems to be no comparative analysis of CpG islands and their density at the DNA sequence level among mammalian genomes and of their correlations with other genome features.
Results In this study, we performed a systematic analysis of CpG islands in ten mammalian genomes. We found that both the number of CpG islands and their density vary greatly …
Comparative Analysis Of Cpg Islands In Four Fish Genomes, Leng Han, Zhongming Zhao
Comparative Analysis Of Cpg Islands In Four Fish Genomes, Leng Han, Zhongming Zhao
Psychiatry Publications
There has been much interest in CpG islands (CGIs), clusters of CpG dinucleotides in GC-rich regions, because they are considered gene markers and involved in gene regulation. To date, there has been no genome-wide analysis of CGIs in the fish genome. We first evaluated the performance of three popular CGI identification algorithms in four fish genomes (tetraodon, stickleback, medaka, and zebrafish). Our results suggest that Takai and Jones' (2002) algorithm is most suitable for comparative analysis of CGIs in the fish genome. Then, we performed a systematic analysis of CGIs in the four fish genomes using Takai and Jones' algorithm, …

Study of Biological Complexity Publications
Background
Identification of genes that modulate longevity is a major focus of aging-related research and an area of intense public interest. In addition to facilitating an improved understanding of the basic mechanisms of aging, such genes represent potential targets for therapeutic intervention in multiple age-associated diseases, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders. To date, however, targeted efforts at identifying longevity-associated genes have been limited by a lack of predictive power, and useful algorithms for candidate gene-identification have also been lacking.
Methodology/Principal Findings
We have utilized a shortest-path network analysis to identify novel genes that modulate longevity in Saccharomyces …

Two-Photon Photosensitized Singlet Oxygen Production, Jacob Arnbjerg, Mette Johnsen, Peter R. Ogilby
The Spectrum
In this article, we review material that, in title, may seem esoteric. However, through our discussion we hope to convince the reader that a study of the two-photon photosensitized production of singlet oxygen provides the framework for an interesting cross-disciplinary research program of broad scope. The issues addressed cover ground that ranges from fundamental physical chemistry to cell biology.
