Northeast Community Survey 2008: Final Report, Sharon Chamard, Brad A. Myrstol

Reports

East Anchorage is currently the only site in Alaska under the nationwide Weed and Seed initiative, which is intended to “weed out” criminals who undermine quality of life for community residents in high-crime neighborhoods and to “seed in” positive practices, programs and institutions that contribute to a better quality of life for neighborhoods. The East Anchorage Weed and Seed site, located in a racially and ethnically diverse neighborhood in the northeast part of Anchorage, had an estimated population in 2005 of more than 37,000 people living in about 14,000 households. Revisiting Alaska's Sex Offender Registration And Public Notification Statute, Deborah Periman Oct 2008

Revisiting Alaska's Sex Offender Registration And Public Notification Statute, Deborah Periman

UAAJC Occasional Papers

This paper provides a look at the parameters of the Alaska’s sex offender registration statute. However, Alaska’s statute and its federal counterpart were based on assumptions about sex offender recidivism and the effectiveness of …

Challenging The New Penology: A Case-Study Analysis Of Correctional Management, Interstate Inmate Transfers, And Administrative Intent, Robert Thomas Swan Oct 2008

Challenging The New Penology: A Case-Study Analysis Of Correctional Management, Interstate Inmate Transfers, And Administrative Intent, Robert Thomas Swan

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to explore the use of interstate inmate transfers (IITs) by prison wardens and the administrative intent that guide their use. This study assesses the explanatory power of the new penology in three cases and asks three broad questions of two prison wardens and the DOC: What correctional goals do you hope to accomplish with interstate inmate transfers? Why? And what contextual factors (if any) are felt to inhibit or facilitate these goals?

IITs are controversial. Supporters of IITs argue that in addition to serving the needs of correctional managers, they may also serve to …

A Process And Outcome Evaluation Of Police Working With Youth Programs, Stephen Anderson, Ronald Sabatelli, Jennifer Trachtenberg

Journal of Youth Development

A process and outcome evaluation of 10 Police Working with Youth Programs was conducted. Process results indicated that the core components of the programs were consistent with those identified in previous literature as characteristic of quality youth development programs. Outcome results indicated that youth participants reported significantly improved attitudes toward police and social support received from significant, non-familial adults. Two subgroups of youth, most notably minority youth and younger participants in lower grade levels, reported positive changes in their capacity to resist peer pressures. Minority youth reported positive changes in their sense of mastery over stressful life situations. Relationships between …
