Successful Use Of Alarm And Alert Calls To Reduce Emerging Crop Damage By Resident Canada Geese Near Horicon Marsh, Wisconsin, Philip Whitford Jan 2008

Successful Use Of Alarm And Alert Calls To Reduce Emerging Crop Damage By Resident Canada Geese Near Horicon Marsh, Wisconsin, Philip Whitford

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 11th (2009)

Increased populations of resident Canada geese create major crop loss problems for farmers, especially in areas that become traditional sites for brood-rearing. Such sites concentrate geese and goslings in locations where food is abundant and flightless adults and young find escape safety on adjacent lakes or rivers. Emerging corn, winter wheat, and soybeans are favorite foods, and these sustain extensive crop damage when near water and brood-rearing sites. From 16 May to 28 August 2007, alarm and alert call playbacks from GooseBuster call units were used with and without other scare reinforcement to assess efficacy of different methods at reducing …

A Theoretical Framework For Quality-Aware Cross-Layer Optimized Wireless Multimedia Communications, Song Ci, Haohong Wang, Dalei Wu Jan 2008

A Theoretical Framework For Quality-Aware Cross-Layer Optimized Wireless Multimedia Communications, Song Ci, Haohong Wang, Dalei Wu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Although cross-layer has been thought as one of themost effective and efficient ways formultimedia communications over wireless networks and a plethora of research has been done in this area, there is still lacking of a rigorous mathematical model to gain indepth understanding of cross-layer design tradeoffs, spanning from application layer to physical layer. As a result, many existing cross-layer designs enhance the performance of certain layers at the price of either introducing side effects to the overall system performance or violating the syntax and semantics of the layered network architecture. Therefore, lacking of a rigorous theoretical study makes existing cross-layer …

Bells Of Change: Kathak Dance, Women And Modernity In India, Pallabi Chakravorty

Dance Faculty Works

The first critical study of Kathak dance within the discourses of the modern and the global, tracing the arc of two centuries of Kathak: the colonial nautch dance, classical Kathak under nationalism and postcolonialism and 'innovation' and 'new directions' under transnationalism and globalization. It blends various approaches from anthropology, ethnomusicology, and performance, media and gender studies to map the journey of Kathak from baijis and tawaifs to the global stage. The book uses dance as a lens to explore the interaction between the actors and forces of cultural change from power and patronage to television and film.

Factors Determining Incorporation Of Innovative Minigrant Programs In Nevada School Systems, O. Dennis Ortwein Jan 2008

Factors Determining Incorporation Of Innovative Minigrant Programs In Nevada School Systems, O. Dennis Ortwein

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study established the extent to which ESEA Title III Minigrant projects funded in 1973-75 were continuing in Nevada during the 1977-78 school term. Characteristics of the institution and of the innovation found by the Rand Corporation to influence incorporation (continuation) were then compared to four levels of program continuation. Thirty-seven of the forty-two minigrant recipients provided the two sets of data, and the chi-square ((chi)('2)) test was applied to determine that the following Rand Study characteristics inferred continuation of minigrants: strong administrative support, dominant staff training model, active consumer demand, congruence with local priorities, and activities which replace local …

A Proposed Schema For Analyzing The "Other" In Visual, Political Satire: The New Yorker Cartoon On Barack Obama, Safiyya Hosein Jan 2008

A Proposed Schema For Analyzing The "Other" In Visual, Political Satire: The New Yorker Cartoon On Barack Obama, Safiyya Hosein

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This thesis will provide an image schema for analyzing the Other in satirical imagery. It will also strengthen previous theories in visual communication that argue that imagery, specifically satirical imagery, may also function in the form of visual ideographs. The case study that will be conducted to illustrate this argument will be an analysis of the controversial July/2008 New Yorker cartoon entitled The Politics of Fear which satirized Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, as "fist-bumping" terrorists in the White House. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework or analysis tool for deconstructing the Other in …

Application Of Artificial Neural Networks And Colored Petri Nets On Earthquake Resilient Water Distribution Systems, Nandini Kavanal Balakrishnan

Masters Theses

"Water distribution systems are important lifelines and a critical and complex infrastructure of a country. The performance of this system during unexpected rare events is important as it is one of the lifelines that people directly depend on and other factors indirectly impact the economy of a nation. In this thesis a couple of methods that can be used to predict damage and simulate the restoration process of a water distribution system are presented. Contributing to the effort of applying computational tools to infrastructure systems, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to predict the rate of damage in the pipe …

Virtual World Affordances: Enhancing Brand Value, Sora Park, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, David Dewester, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Sunran Jeon Jan 2008

Virtual World Affordances: Enhancing Brand Value, Sora Park, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, David Dewester, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Sunran Jeon

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds that are a natural extension of the existing Internet. Although many businesses are jumping on the bandwagon to maintain a presence in virtual worlds, there is no well-established knowledge or theory to guide businesses in their involvement in these environments. In this paper, we identify affordances in the virtual worlds that can be used to increase the state of flow experienced in a business virtual site, which in turn may enhance brand equity, or the perceived added value of a brand to customers. We present a conceptual model that can be used to guide …

Many Telling Moments:The Essence Of Fragmented Image Culture, Bonnie Ebner Jan 2008

Many Telling Moments:The Essence Of Fragmented Image Culture, Bonnie Ebner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My purpose in entering the UCF MFA program was to further explore and develop my passion for photography. During my time in the program, I developed my methodology--from having the traditional photography paradigm ingrained in my mind (and wanting to fit into it) to accepting and valuing my own unique process. I construct installations using diverse imagery and non-traditional presentation. In my installations, one may witness a reflection of the contemporary pace of image perception--fragmented, complex, abundant, and disordered. Together, images and their arrangements are used to create a unified piece that satisfies a new system within apparent disorder. The …

Persuasion By Design: World War I, The Committee On Public Information, And The Effectiveness Of Good Poster Design, Kelly Labrecque Jan 2008

Persuasion By Design: World War I, The Committee On Public Information, And The Effectiveness Of Good Poster Design, Kelly Labrecque

Master's Theses and Capstones

World War I propaganda posters were examined for design effectiveness. The Wilson Administration's policy of neutrality lead to the need for the creation of the Committee on Public Information (CPI) with a Department of Pictorial Publicity (DPP) when the United States entered the war in April, 1917. Illiteracy and foreign speaking Americans made the poster the most effective way of communicating messages of food conservation, support for the troops and Allies, and hatred of the enemy. By applying modern graphic design theory to the posters created by the CPI it is possible to evaluate which posters may have had the …

Photography After The Incidents: We're Not Afraid, Panizza Allmark Jan 2008

Photography After The Incidents: We're Not Afraid, Panizza Allmark

Research outputs pre 2011

This article will look at the use of personal photographs that attempt to convey a sense of social activism as a reaction against global terrorism. Moreover, I argue that the photographs uploaded to the site “We’re Not Afraid”, which began after the London bombings in 2005, presents a forum to promote the pleasures of western cultural values as a defence against the anxiety of terror. What is compelling are the ways in which the Website promotes, seemingly, everyday modalities through what may be deemed as the domestic snapshot. Nevertheless, the aura from the context of these images operates to arouse …

A Novel Mobile Wimax Solution For Higher Throughput, Iftekhar Ahmad, Daryoush Habibi Jan 2008

A Novel Mobile Wimax Solution For Higher Throughput, Iftekhar Ahmad, Daryoush Habibi

Research outputs pre 2011

The IEEE 802.16 standard, also known as WiMAX, has emerged as an exciting technology for broadband wireless communications with potentials to offer high throughput and support high bandwidth demanding applications. WiMAX, however, has yet to prove its effectiveness when the end terminals are not fixed and have the capacity to move from one place to another at different speeds. Recent studies suggest that while WiMAX (802.16e) has the potential to deliver a data rate up to 75 Mb/s for fixed wireless communications, it fails drastically for mobile wireless communications, often providing a data rate less than 1 Mb/s when the …
