Who Put That Column Into The Middle Of The Room? Designing Functional, Flexible, And Forgiving Spaces For Library Instruction, Paul Glassman Apr 2008

Who Put That Column Into The Middle Of The Room? Designing Functional, Flexible, And Forgiving Spaces For Library Instruction, Paul Glassman

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006

What is the right space for library instruction? How do we propose a project of that magnitude? What happens if the architect doesn't listen to us? Can we do this on our own, without an architect? Do we want fixed seating? What type of equipment is needed? What should the capacity be? These and other questions will be addressed in this practical session for any participant with an interest in or need to create dedicated instructional spaces within or near a library. With the increasing demand for electronic classrooms and the measurable benefits smart classrooms have in effective information literacy …

Animated Realities: The Animated Film, Documentary, Realism, Paul Ward

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

One of the most potentially interesting areas for discussion in Animation Studies is how animation relates to conceptions of the real and realism. As Maureen Furniss has noted (1998: 5ff), a typology of moving image production can be most usefully constructed around the relative realism attached to particular representations. The two opposing tendencies of mimesis and abstraction offer a multitude of intermediate positions where a specific text can be placed and thereby understood. There are two basic ways that one can approach this area. First of all, one can analyze and evaluate how animation "is realistic" (or not, …

Fashion Advertising, Men’S Magazines, And Sex In Advertising: A Critical-Interpretive Study, Jennifer Ford Mar 2008

Fashion Advertising, Men’S Magazines, And Sex In Advertising: A Critical-Interpretive Study, Jennifer Ford

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines sexualized portrayals of women in fashion advertising found in metro-sexual men's magazines as visual rhetoric. Historically, studies on sexual images of women in advertising have focused on content analyses of these images and how they affect women. This study asks how sexualized imagery of women functions rhetorically as part of a branding message designed to sell products. The exemplar advertisements were chosen specifically for their sexual imagery from an earlier study by the researcher on sexual images of women in fashion advertisements found in men's magazines.

The messages interpreted within the visuals of this study reveal a …

Entering The Virtual Teacher’S Lounge: The Efficacy Of Community In Computer-Mediated Communication Based Environments For Professional Educators, Randall S. Dunn

Faculty Dissertations

This study seeks to illuminate an understanding of naturally forming online communities of professional educators in the context of off-line communities. Essentially, an online discussion forum for educators is evaluated for the purpose of determining whether the forum provides a “space” conducive for the development of a community of professional educators as benchmarked against an understanding of offline community formation and existence. The foundational works of Ferdinand Tonnies, James Coleman, and Ray Oldenburg are used to develop 13 characteristics of community - as understood in the context of informal social communities as opposed to the types related to more formal …

The Film Title Sequence As An Influence On The Design Of Print Promotion, Rajat Khullar

Theses

Graphic design solutions for promotional purposes pose a special challenge for designers who must not only make certain that the design is conceptually strong and engaging in itself, but also that it is successful in conveying the worth of a product, a brand, an organization or company to a diverse audience. Promotional design is all about presenting its subject in the most attractive manner possible in order to draw viewer attention to that which is being promoted. Such design solutions aim at creating a need or demand for a specific type of goods or services offered by a client. Alternatively …
