Challenging The New Penology: A Case-Study Analysis Of Correctional Management, Interstate Inmate Transfers, And Administrative Intent, Robert Thomas Swan

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to explore the use of interstate inmate transfers (IITs) by prison wardens and the administrative intent that guide their use. This study assesses the explanatory power of the new penology in three cases and asks three broad questions of two prison wardens and the DOC: What correctional goals do you hope to accomplish with interstate inmate transfers? Why? And what contextual factors (if any) are felt to inhibit or facilitate these goals?

IITs are controversial. Supporters of IITs argue that in addition to serving the needs of correctional managers, they may also serve to …

Towards Developing Indicators Of Environmental Sustainability For Kathmandu, Nepal, Ambika Prasad Adhikari Oct 2008

Towards Developing Indicators Of Environmental Sustainability For Kathmandu, Nepal, Ambika Prasad Adhikari

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Sustainability is now considered a key objective of urban planning everywhere. However, due to inappropriate planning, weak institutions, lack of resources and poor implementation of policies, most big cities in the developing world have become even less sustainable, environmentally, economically and socially, than they were in the past. Kathmandu, Nepal enjoyed a unique tradition, rich history and a moderate state of sustainability in all areas, particularly a strong environmental sustainability, in the past. However, the rapidly growing and modernizing city of Kathmandu is facing serious problems of sustainability in all fronts: economic, social, environmental and ecological. Whereas environmental and economic …

Natural Disaster And Sickness Shocks: Evidence Of Informal Social Insurance From Bangladesh, Pallab Mozumder Oct 2008

Natural Disaster And Sickness Shocks: Evidence Of Informal Social Insurance From Bangladesh, Pallab Mozumder

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Bangladesh is prone to large scale natural disasters with consequent impacts on human health and survival. In 1998, Bangladesh experienced the flood of the century'. Households exposed to flooding had major crop failure, suffered from various water-borne diseases, lost shelter, assets and ability to meet their basic needs. Based on multiple rounds of household survey data from rural Bangladesh collected after the 1998 flooding, this article investigate the factors that contribute to reduce sickness shocks after a massive natural disaster. Results indicate that social cohesion built on group-based microfinance programs may provide an informal social insurance mechanism to reduce sickness …

Faithful Leisure, Faithful Work: Religious Practice As An Act Of Consumption In Nepal, Charis Boke

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The aim of this paper is to further discussion on the changing landscape of Nepals socioeconomic world as seen through the lens of religious worship sites and practices. Anthropologists of religion in Nepal have a long history of exploring worship sites and practices, and the ways in which those sites and practices integrate, and integrate into, Nepali cultures and societies. As Nepal is increasingly connected to an economically, politically and socially globalizing world, a fresh review of worship sites and practices is in order—not only from a strictly ethnographic, documentary perspective, but from a perspective that considers how the rapid …

Climate Change And Farm Use Of Weather Information, Ikrom Artikov, Gary D. Lynne Oct 2008

Climate Change And Farm Use Of Weather Information, Ikrom Artikov, Gary D. Lynne

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

Rapid global climate change as represented by rising temperatures and more erratic and severe weather events has heightened the interest in how farmers use weather information. Due to the food supply being so essential, it behooves us to pay attention to this phenomenon, and especially to put effort into understanding how farmers will respond and adapt to information about climate generally and forecasts in particular. To reduce the negative effects of climate on crop production and enhance field operations, the best weather information needs to be influencing farmer decisions.
