Model For Teaching Musical Discernment In The Christian Secondary School, Zachary J. Vreeman Nov 2008

Model For Teaching Musical Discernment In The Christian Secondary School, Zachary J. Vreeman

Master of Education Program Theses

Recent technological advances in recording and reproducing music have greatly changed the way that members of this culture interact with music. With an ever-expanding wealth of recordings, students in Christian secondary schools are faced with an increasing number of musical choices and must be equipped to discern musical activity in a God-glorifying way. This study researches the factors influencing students' musical attitudes over which schools have the most control, describes a biblically-based Christian attitude towards music, and finally proposes a model based on that research for teaching musical discernment from a distinctly Christian standpoint. The proposed model includes the establishment …

Church Doctrine: Effects On The Self-Worth Of Married Women, Mary Claire Kondro Nov 2008

Church Doctrine: Effects On The Self-Worth Of Married Women, Mary Claire Kondro

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study examines if married women who attend churches that teach patriarchal marriage roles have lower self-esteem than married women who attend churches that teach egalitarianism in marriage. Forty participants from two churches were administered the Contingencies of Self-Worth Survey (Crocker, 2003). Although the difference in self-esteem between the two groups was not found to be statistically significant, this study brought to light several issues that could be better controlled in a large-scale study in the future.

How Lindenwood Students Get To Class: A Study Of Driving Versus Walking, Sara Ohlms Nov 2008

How Lindenwood Students Get To Class: A Study Of Driving Versus Walking, Sara Ohlms

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a lack of parking at Lindenwood University (LU), and if that problem could be solved if more students who currently drive to class would walk instead. Research shows that college students in America are not getting enough exercise, and that walking has many health benefits. Data were collected using a survey with 40 LU students. Data were also collected through observations of the parking lots on campus. The results show that there are always empty parking spots on campus, 67.5% of participants believe that there is not enough parking …

To Play Or Not To Play: Comparing Athlete’S Gpa To Non-Athlete’S Gpa, Lisa Clark, David Kanning Nov 2008

To Play Or Not To Play: Comparing Athlete’S Gpa To Non-Athlete’S Gpa, Lisa Clark, David Kanning

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study examines whether participating in athletics at Lindenwood University is related to the athlete’s GPA. It was hypothesized that due to the higher demands of coaches and maintaining a minimum GPA, athletes will have a higher GPA than non-athletes. The researchers contacted professors and coaches to ask permission to survey their students and athletes. After giving a survey to participants, the Lindenwood University Registrar’s Office looked up official GPAs of participants who gave their permission. The findings showed no significance supporting our hypothesis. There are several possible reasons for this weak correlation such as the number of participants and …

On Cross-Cultural Interpretations Of Aboriginal Art, Darren Jorgensen Nov 2008

On Cross-Cultural Interpretations Of Aboriginal Art, Darren Jorgensen

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This paper critiques three schools of international art scholarship and their relevance to Australian Aboriginal art from remote communities. These schools are primitivism, histories of ornament and aesthetic theory. This is with a view to looking beyond accounts of Aboriginal art as representational, and toward a cross-cultural and sensual account of its practice. While primitivism influenced the scholarship on high art, histories of ornament and aesthetic theory offer new approaches to this art, and new ways of thinking about Aboriginal painting. The paper partly argues that the extensive influence of primitivism has prevented these latter areas of study in having …

The Changing Context, Denise Fort, Helen Ingram, David Feldman, Nathan Mantua, Katharine L. Jacobs, Nancy Beller-Simms

Faculty Book Display Case

Faced with mounting pressures from a changing climate, an increasing population, a transitory populace, and varying access to available natural resources, decision makers, scientists, and resource managers have an immediate need to understand, obtain, and better integrate climate forecasts and observational data in near- and long-term planning. Reducing our societal vulnerability to variabilities and changes in climate depends upon our ability to bridge the gap between climate science and the implementation of scientific understanding in our management of critical resources, arguably the most important of which is water. Our ability to adapt and respond to climate variability and change depends, …

Who Cares About Polar Regions? Results From A Survey Of U.S. Public Opinion, Lawrence C. Hamilton Nov 2008

Who Cares About Polar Regions? Results From A Survey Of U.S. Public Opinion, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Sociology

Abstract

What do members of the general public know about polar regions, and how much do they care? Who knows or cares? This paper explores data from the General Social Survey (GSS), which in 2006 questioned a representative sample of more than 1800 U.S. adults about their knowledge and opinions concerning polar regions. The polar survey items were modeled on long-running GSS assessments of general science knowledge and opinions, recently summarized in the U.S. National Science Board's report Science and Engineering Indicators 2008. Polar knowledge proves to be limited but certainly not absent among survey respondents. Polar knowledge, general science …

Gleishcshaltung And The Confessing Church During The German Church Struggle, Emily Jane Darnell Nov 2008

Gleishcshaltung And The Confessing Church During The German Church Struggle, Emily Jane Darnell

Masters Theses

This thesis analyzes the contributing factors to the actions taken by the churches in Germany during what Karl Barth and others termed the Kirchenkampf, or German Church Struggle. The Kirchenkampf took place mainly in the 1930s and 1940s. As Hitler rose to power, a new term was coined, Gleichschaltung, which described his program for bringing all of Germany and his conquests into line with the worldview of the Third Reich.

The primary sources for research include works by Martin Luther that shaped the mindset of the churchmen, and history texts detailing the Weimar Republic serving as background for the cultural …

Moving Ahead: Five Essential Elements For Working Effectively With Girls, Betsy Mattews, Dana Jones Hubbard Nov 2008

Moving Ahead: Five Essential Elements For Working Effectively With Girls, Betsy Mattews, Dana Jones Hubbard

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Quite a bit of literature these days addresses what is believed to be an increase in the frequency and severity of girls' problem behaviors and the need for gender-responsive treatment. The extent to which this literature has been translated into juvenile justice practices, however, appears limited by several factors. This article briefly discusses these impediments, and offers suggestions for five essential elements that reflect the current state of knowledge regarding effective intervention with girls involved in the juvenile justice system.

Deconstructing Masculinity In A ‘Female Bastion’: Ambiguities, Contradictions And Insights, Charles C. Fonchingong Nov 2008

Deconstructing Masculinity In A ‘Female Bastion’: Ambiguities, Contradictions And Insights, Charles C. Fonchingong

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article is informed by my experiences teaching women’s studies and specifically feminist theory to predominantly female and male students offering Women’s studies. As a mainstream academic discipline at the University of Buea, housing the only such Department in Cameroon’s Higher Education system, this study uncovers the broader polemics regarding gender and women’s studies.

Against the backdrop of a patriarchal society, this study attempts to account for the shifting strands on masculinity and femininity and gender transgressions as played out by students taking women’s studies. It also analyses the notions, misconceptions and stereotypes that characterise the discipline of women’s studies, …

"Everybody Is Making Love Or Else Expecting Rain": Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin

Washington Law Review

One of the most controversial policy questions in all of institutional mental disability law is the extent to which patients in psychiatric hospitals have a right to voluntary sexual interaction. The resolution of this matter involves difficult and sensitive questions of law, social policy, clinical judgment, politics, religion, and family structures. As difficult as these questions are in cases involving civil hospitals, the difficulties are exacerbated when the topic is the application of the right in forensic hospitals. Such facilities typically house individuals involved in the criminal-justice system: who may be incompetent to stand trial; who have been found incompetent …

Data Note: Tracking Employment And Day Support Participation And Outcomes In State Intellectual Disability And Developmental Disability Agencies, Samita Bhattarai, Jean E. Winsor

Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

As a part of the FY2007 National Survey of Day and Employment Programs data was requested from state Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD) agencies regarding the sources of information used to report the total number of individuals served in the following services categories: integrated employment, facility-based work, community-based non work, and facility-based non work. Data on sources is an important factor to note when comparing each state’s service outcomes over time. Collecting information on the source of the data can help to explain unexpected trends in state service distribution when the state has not implemented changes in policy or …

Fits & Starts: The Difficult Path For Working Single Parents, Rebecca Loya, Ruth J. Liberman, Randy Albelda, Elisabeth Babcock

Center for Social Policy Publications

With dramatic shifts in the economy in recent years, it has become increasingly difficult for families to move into or stay in the middle class without access to higher education and skills training. Government-sponsored work supports help by providing direct assistance to working families to meet basic needs, such as child care, food, and housing. Yet, many supports do not reach low-wage working families in Massachusetts because of low eligibility thresholds, inadequate funding, limited availability, limited awareness, and numerous barriers to accessing such supports. Even for low-wage workers who do receive key work supports, such as subsidized child care and …

Originalism's Expiration Date, Adam M. Samaha Nov 2008

Originalism's Expiration Date, Adam M. Samaha

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The Constitution of the United States declares itself supreme law, but even the amended document is ancient. By 2008, the predicted age of a randomly selected word in this text reached 178 years. The judiciary, for its part, might not interpret the text until decades after ratification. For Article V amendments, the average lag between ratification and Supreme Court interpretation has been about 40 years. The question is how these features of our supreme law might influence the choice of interpretive method and, ultimately, constitutional decision-making. In particular, some scholars indicate that originalism may be a strong force in adjudication …

Rural Life Census Data Center Newsletter: The U.S. Census Bureau And American Community Survey: Advantages, Uses, And Limitations, Trevor Brooks, Saileza Khatiwada, Joel Vargas, Michael Mccurry

Census Data Center Newsletter Archive: 2007-2010

The U.S. Census Bureau is supported and funded by the U.S. government and is a widely used source for demographic data. Social, housing, and economic data can easily be obtained from the bureau’s website (www.census.gov). There is broad range of information presented (for example, data on age, sex, household structure, and/or income levels can be shown for any U.S. location [Edmonston and Schultze 1995]). The bureau provides data to the block level (Weeks 2005). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the block is the smallest geographical unit in which census data can be collected. Blocks usually correspond with city blocks …

Foreword, Margaret E. Mcguinness

Missouri Law Review

Columbia, Missouri is a fitting venue at which to continue the conversation about Missouri v. Holland and explore the intersection of law-making at the international, national and sub-national levels. This symposium revisits the debate over national and local control over foreign affairs and brings together the constitutional doctrinal discussion and accounts of the globalization of regulation that consider the complexity of influences operating within and between multiple systems of law. Both the factual background of Holland (primarily a case about environmental regulation) and the doctrinal context in which it arose (a Supreme Court poised to move toward constitutional endorsement of …
