A Clash Of Cultures: Immigration And Housing Code Enforcement On Long Island, Stefan H. Krieger Jan 2008

A Clash Of Cultures: Immigration And Housing Code Enforcement On Long Island, Stefan H. Krieger

Hofstra Law Review

In this Article, I will first review some of the literature on anti-immigrant biases in housing code enforcement in the United States. Then, I will describe issues of selective enforcement of housing codes in present-day Long Island using cases from the Hofstra Housing Rights Clinic as concrete illustrations. Finally, I will discuss ways that local governments both on Long Island and elsewhere can reconsider priorities in enforcing their housing codes to address the problems of cultural biases.

Educational Investment, Family Context, And Children’S Math And Reading Growth From Kindergarten Through The Third Grade, Jacob Cheadle Jan 2008

Educational Investment, Family Context, And Children’S Math And Reading Growth From Kindergarten Through The Third Grade, Jacob Cheadle

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Drawing on longitudinal data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998–1999, this study used IRT modeling to operationalize a measure of parental educational investments based on Lareau’s notion of concerted cultivation. It used multilevel piecewise growth models regressing children’s math and reading achievement from entry into kindergarten through the third grade on concerted cultivation and family context variables. The results indicate that educational investments are an important mediator of socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities, completely explaining the black-white reading gap at kindergarten entry and consistently explaining 20 percent to 60 percent and 30 percent to 50 percent of …

Local Archives And Teaching The History Of Sociology: Experiences At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Michael R. Hill Jan 2008

Local Archives And Teaching The History Of Sociology: Experiences At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Opportunities to teach and conduct research on the local disciplinary history of sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are limited only by one’s imagination and the pragmatic realities of classroom constraints. Over the years, I have been privileged to introduce Nebraska students to many particulars of the local sociological record via guest lectures in courses and colloquia, standalone PowerPoint slide shows, archival displays, informational brochures, various publications, and by distributing extensive compilations of pertinent documents on compact discs. Most recently, I included a one-and-a-half-week segment on the history of Nebraska sociology in an Introduction to Sociology course (Hill 2007c), employing …

Does “Yes Or No” On The Telephone Mean The Same As “Check-All-That-Apply” On The Web?, Jolene D. Smyth, Leah Melani Christian, Don A. Dillman Jan 2008

Does “Yes Or No” On The Telephone Mean The Same As “Check-All-That-Apply” On The Web?, Jolene D. Smyth, Leah Melani Christian, Don A. Dillman

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Recent experimental research has shown that respondents to forced-choice questions endorse significantly more options than respondents to check-all questions. This research has challenged the common assumption that these two question formats can be used interchangeably but has been limited to comparisons within a single survey mode. In this paper we use data from a 2004 random sample survey of university students to compare the forced-choice and check-all question formats across web self-administered and telephone interviewer-administered surveys as they are commonly used in survey practice. We find that the within-mode question format effects revealed by previous research and reaffirmed in the …

A Comparison Of Risk Factors For Sexual Victimization Among Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, And Heterosexual Homeless Young Adults, Kimberly A. Tyler Jan 2008

A Comparison Of Risk Factors For Sexual Victimization Among Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, And Heterosexual Homeless Young Adults, Kimberly A. Tyler

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Although high rates of sexual victimization have been reported among homeless youth, less is known about whether the risk factors vary for gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth compared to heterosexual youth. Based on a sample of 172 homeless young adults ages 19 to 26, results revealed that depressive symptoms, prostitution, and having friends who traded sex were significantly associated with higher levels of sexual victimization. Gay, lesbian, and bisexual young adults experienced more sexual victimization compared to heterosexual young adults. A test for interactions revealed that the effect of sexual orientation on sexual victimization was moderated by trading sex and …

Privacy, Visibility, Transparency, And Exposure, Julie E. Cohen Jan 2008

Privacy, Visibility, Transparency, And Exposure, Julie E. Cohen

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay considers the relationship between privacy and visibility in the networked information age. Visibility is an important determinant of harm to privacy, but a persistent tendency to conceptualize privacy harms and expectations in terms of visibility has created two problems. First, focusing on visibility diminishes the salience and obscures the operation of nonvisual mechanisms designed to render individual identity, behavior, and preferences transparent to third parties. The metaphoric mapping to visibility suggests that surveillance is simply passive observation, rather than the active production of categories, narratives, and, norms. Second, even a broader conception of privacy harms as a function …

Investigating Community Factors As Predictors Of Rural 11th-Grade Agricultural Science Students’ Choice Of Careers In Agriculture, Omolola A. Adedokun, Mark Balschweid

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This study investigates the links between community contexts/factors and rural 11th-grade agricultural science students’ choice of careers in agriculture. A logistic regression model was developed and tested to examine the extent to which nine measures of community contexts (i.e., membership in FFA, membership in 4-H, community attachment, community satisfaction, length of residency in the community, positive perception of local community, preference for residing close to nature, and participation in volunteer activities) influence the odds of a student choosing a career in agriculture. The results show that the major community factors influencing the choice of agriculture related careers are membership in …

County-Level Analysis Of Small Business And Entrepreneurship In West Virginia: Impact On Rural Economic Growth., Semoa Costa De Sousa-Brown Jan 2008

County-Level Analysis Of Small Business And Entrepreneurship In West Virginia: Impact On Rural Economic Growth., Semoa Costa De Sousa-Brown

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

West Virginia is one of the nation’s most rural states and historically its economy has been more unstable than that of most states. Over the years, West Virginia has devoted efforts through national and local policy programs to induce economic prosperity, curtail out-migration, and mitigate poverty, yet many of its counties remain economically depressed with high unemployment, deeply rooted poverty, low human capital formation, out-migration, and a shrinking economic base. This means, that the state policy makers need to shift or broaden their policy focus to incorporate small businesses and entrepreneurship approach to development. Studies have shown that small businesses …

Development Of A Premarital Counseling Seminar For Pastors And Church Workers In The Euro-Asia Division, Elena Zhigankova

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

According to the 1984 Annual Council policy, Seventh-day Adventist ministers are to provide premarital guidance to couples requesting marriage. Where possible, this preparation of the couple should consist of several counseling sessions conducted by the minister who is to perform the service or by another qualified individual. Despite its obvious importance, this policy has not been seriously considered or implemented in Russia.

Description

The process of designing a Premarital Counseling Seminar for pastors and other church workers in the Euro-Asia Division of Seventh-day Adventists is presented. The seminar content is intended to introduce pastors to their responsibilities as premarital …

Death, Dying, And Domination, Marc Spindelman Jan 2008

Death, Dying, And Domination, Marc Spindelman

Michigan Law Review

This Article critiques conventional liberal arguments for the right to die on liberal grounds. It contends that these arguments do not go far enough to recognize and address private, and in particular structural, forms of domination. It presents an alternative that does, which is thus more respectful of true freedom in the context of death and dying, and also more consistent with liberalism. After discussing obstacles to the achievement of a right to die that encompasses freedom from both public and private domination, the Article closes with a significant reform project within bioethics that might help bring it about.

The Human And Economic Dimensions Of Altruism: The Case Of Organ Transplantation, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2008

The Human And Economic Dimensions Of Altruism: The Case Of Organ Transplantation, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper analyzes three issues critical to understanding the chronic shortage in organs. Section 2 develops a simple economic model of altruism that helps explain how markets with altruistic participants operate in ways similar to ordinary economic markets, but produce an equilibrium position in which more organs are transferred at lower cash prices. Section 3 examines and rejects the various arguments used to undermine the neoclassical arguments in the first section. Section 4 looks at ways to expand the supply of organs: directed donations within families and among friends, solicited organs via matchingdonors.com, donor-recipient pairs, and LifeSharers.

Conspiracy Theories, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule Jan 2008

Conspiracy Theories, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Many millions of people hold conspiracy theories; they believe that powerful people have worked together in order to withhold the truth about some important practice or some terrible event. A recent example is the belief, widespread in some parts of the world, that the attacks of 9/11 were carried out not by Al Qaeda, but by Israel or the United States. Those who subscribe to conspiracy theories may create serious risks, including risks of violence, and the existence of such theories raises significant challenges for policy and law. The first challenge is to understand the mechanisms by which conspiracy theories …

Taking Attorney-Client Communications (And Therefore Clients) Seriously, Eli Wald

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Article argues that the Rules of Professional Conduct still need significant improvement and should adopt a materiality-based communications rule that would ensure that clients receive all information a reasonable client would consider relevant to making decisions regarding the attorney-client relationship.

The Unmet Promises Of Care Not Cash, Teddy Ky-Nam Miller

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

In November of 2002 San Francisco voters approved Proposition N, titled Care Not Cash, with the intent that it would reduce homelessness and improve the health and welfare of homeless persons receiving General Assistance. This note examines the effectiveness of Care Not Cash in combating homelessness and in achieving its promise of services and aid with the curtailment of General Assistance. In evaluating Care Not Cash's effectiveness, the author reviews homeless assistance programs employed by cities and municipalities throughout the United States. Additionally, the author explores alternative homeless outreach programs currently existent in San Francisco which have been effective in …

Race And Religion In The United Nations Committee On The Elimination Of Racial Discrimination, José A. Lindgren Alves Jan 2008

Race And Religion In The United Nations Committee On The Elimination Of Racial Discrimination, José A. Lindgren Alves

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Article analyzes the work of CERD in the area of religion, a field which, by definition, would not necessarily be covered by the mandate of a committee devoted to the eradication of racism and racial discrimination. Notwithstanding this difference of scope, to the extent that, in the contemporary world, race and religion appear increasingly interwoven, the work of CERD on religion has gradually become accepted and considered necessary.
