Media Literacy In The Digital Age: Implications For Scholars And Students, Barbara R. Burke Jan 2008

Media Literacy In The Digital Age: Implications For Scholars And Students, Barbara R. Burke

Communication, Media, and Rhetoric Publications

Advocates of the practice assert becoming media literate may be the way to take control, and to be better able to identify and control the borders between the real world and the world manufactured by the media. This paper embraces this assertion, and suggests advocating expanding our understandings of media literacy, and creating new strategies for analysis and critique of New Media. To make this argument, the paper will describe American attempts at shaping media education to foster media literacy. Then, a comparison between Campbell’s system and Federov’s modules of media literacy will be offered. Finally, two new elements of …

Values, Ideologies, And Frames Of Reference In Employment Relations, John W. Budd, Devasheesh P. Bhave Jan 2008

Values, Ideologies, And Frames Of Reference In Employment Relations, John W. Budd, Devasheesh P. Bhave

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Employment relations—which form most of the 20th century was called industrial relations, and what some now call human resources and industrial relations—is a multidisciplinary field studying all aspects of work and the employment relationship (Ackers and Wilkinson, 2003; Budd, 2004; Kaufm an, 2004). A multidisciplinary approach means that competing values and assumptions underlie the analyses, policies, and practices of employment relations scholars, practitioners, and policymakers. Unfortunately, these underlying beliefs are often implicit rather than explicit, or, with the longstanding focus on how industrial relations processes work, sometimes ignored altogether. But understanding the employment relationship, corporate human resource management practices, labor …

Rethinking The Role Of Management Consultants As Disseminators Of Business Knowledge: Knowledge Flows, Directions, And Conditions In Consulting Projects, Andrew Sturdy, Karen Handley, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Robin Fincham Jan 2008

Rethinking The Role Of Management Consultants As Disseminators Of Business Knowledge: Knowledge Flows, Directions, And Conditions In Consulting Projects, Andrew Sturdy, Karen Handley, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Robin Fincham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Consultants are seen as core agents in the dissemination of business knowledgethrough their relative expertise and/or rhetorical and knowledge management practices. However, relatively few studies focus specifically on their role in projects with clientorganisations. This paper examines knowledge flow in consultancy projects fromlongitudinal observation and interview research as well as a survey of clients andconsultants working together. Our analysis suggests that the conventional view ofconsultants as disseminators of new management ideas to clients is, at best, exaggerated and certainly misrepresents their role in project work. Firstly, it tends tooccur by default rather than by design. More importantly however, learning is oftenconcerned with …

Servant-Leadership Development In Higher Education, Richard Cummins Jan 2008

Servant-Leadership Development In Higher Education, Richard Cummins

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

"Top line," used by researchers in the field of leadership and creativity (Freeman, Isaksen, & Dorval, 2001), proposes that servant-leadership is a driving force of organizations focused on questions of why and for whom, as opposed to the bottom-line what (pp. 265-267). Higher education could improve with leadership development efforts to "reclaim intangible resources, including people's talents that increase innovative capacity by focusing on relationships, perceptions, and attitudes" (p. 264). Because public education does not have, per se, a dollar-driven, "bottom line" focus, its institutions can be wholly about service. Robert K. Greenleaf (2002), the leading figure in servant-leadership theory …

The Social Context Of Servant-Leadership Assessments, Daniel Stewart, Richard Martin Jan 2008

The Social Context Of Servant-Leadership Assessments, Daniel Stewart, Richard Martin

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In Cervantes' literary classic Don Quixote, there is a remarkable scene in which Quixote describes the beauty of Dulcinea (the object of his passion) to his hapless squire Sancho Panza. Dulcinea's true identity is revealed to Panza, who recognizes her as a peasant girl from a neighboring village. Upon learning the young woman's identity, Panza attempts to persuade Quixote that Dulcinea (whose real name is Aldonza Lorenzo) is, in reality, quite plain and boorish. Quixote, who has never actually seen Dulcinea, rebuts Panza's expose by boldly proclaiming, "I picture her in my imagination as I would have her be" (Cervantes, …

Coping With Everyday Classism: Experiences Of Low-Income People In A Southeastern Rural Community, Susan Faye Ritz

Open Access Dissertations

The present research provided an in-depth look at experiencing and coping with everyday classism in a sample of low-income people in a mid-size southeastern rural United States community. The study employed a qualitative methodology consisting of semi-structured interviews and analyzing the collected data using Grounded Theory Method. Of 50 participants selected for an interview, 40 described experiences with classism, each discussing two incidents, for a total of 80 incidents shared. Seven of the remaining 10 participants felt that they had not experienced classism, but at the same time, they provided insight into one proactive coping strategy that they appeared to …

Insights From The Field: Perceptions Of In-Home Interventionists Working In Appalachian Maryland., Benjamin T. Brauer Jan 2008

Insights From The Field: Perceptions Of In-Home Interventionists Working In Appalachian Maryland., Benjamin T. Brauer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As No Child Left Behind continues to impact public K-12 education, educators continue to seek new ways in which to reach out to at-risk students. Many school administrators and school interventionists are using in-home interventions to assist families in facilitating their child’s success. These interventions range from simply bringing instructional materials to the home of a frequently absent student, to facilitating the delivery of mental health services in the home. While school officials are taking on additional roles and responsibilities to try and meet the growing expectations placed on the public K-12 educational system, many feel that they are doing …

Using Social Support And Theoretically Derived Messages To Increase Awareness And Use Of The C&O Canal National Historical Park For Walking: An Intervention Focused On Local Employees., Lydia H. Lawson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There have been a number of recent studies documenting the various physical, psychological, and social health benefits associated with participation in regular physical activity. In response to compelling evidence of the benefits associated with improving health and in an attempt to promote healthy lifestyles, the Bush Administration proposed the Healthier U.S. Initiative (Executive Order 13266) in 2002. The purpose of this initiative was to promote the use of public lands to improve personal health by encouraging their use for physical activity. Based on the recommendations of the National Park Service Advisory Board Subcommittee on Health & Recreation (2006), the C&O …

Empirical Study Of Hate Crimes In The United States: A Systematic Test Of Levin And Mcdevitt's Typology Of Offenders., Rayna E. Momen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to test Levin and McDevitt's Typology of Offenders theory using NIBRS data. Analysis of data from the National Incident-Based Reporting System on hate crime offenders (1995 - 2000) reveals that for thrill-seeking offenders 1) white adults age 18 and older are significantly more likely to commit hate crimes against perceived homosexuals, and 2) that white adults age 18 and older, suspected of using alcohol and/or drugs are significantly more likely to commit hate crimes against perceived homosexuals known to the victim, at the victim's residence/home. For defensive offenders, the following result was found 1) …

Cultural Assimilation, Appropriation And Commercialization: Authenticity In Rap Music, 1997-2004., Jonathan P. Tummons Jan 2008

Cultural Assimilation, Appropriation And Commercialization: Authenticity In Rap Music, 1997-2004., Jonathan P. Tummons

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis examines the changes in authenticity in rap lyrics between 1997 and 2004. Throughout its American history, Black music has expressed the lived experiences, the psychological realities, of Africans in diaspora and has always functioned to help create, negotiate and maintain cultural identity or “Blackness”. Within the last 20 years, rap music has undergone a tremendous amount of commercialization and appropriation by capitalistic culture industries and their largely white consumer base which has resulted in the widespread assimilation of black cultural expression into popular (white) culture. Rap artists increasingly invoke their authenticity as a way of preserving their cultural …

Authentic Education And The Innate Health Model: An Approach To Optimizing The Education Of The Whole Person., M Deborah Larimer Jan 2008

Authentic Education And The Innate Health Model: An Approach To Optimizing The Education Of The Whole Person., M Deborah Larimer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To test the premise that optimal learning and development require a constructivist education of the whole person, this research examined outcomes of instruction using an approach called Innate Health which claims that awareness of the dynamics of thought will stimulate healthy, productive behavior (presumably innate). While much has been written about socio-moral education; little research has addressed the role of thought, innate qualities, or attention to the whole person as mediators of learning and development. Two self-report scales (Understanding of Experience Scale, and Lifestyle Assessment Scale) were constructed to measure outcomes of instruction among participants in Innate Health seminars. Data …

HIV and AIDS

The Population Council, in collaboration with the Brazil Ministry of Health, the Municipal Program of STD/AIDS of Campinas, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Global AIDS Program/Brazil, conducted a study to characterize the sociodemographic, behavioral, and environmental factors associated with subgroups of MSM who are most at risk for HIV infection. This research is the first Brazilian study to provide population-based estimates for HIV, syphilis, and HIV-related risk behaviors using an innovative sampling technique to reach members of the target population. Our data suggest the importance for HIV prevention programs to address not only sexual risk reduction, but …

Is It Feasible To Integrate Alcohol-Related Risk Reduction Counseling Into Vct Services? Findings From Kenya, Caroline Mackenzie, Karusa Kiragu, George Odingo, Rukia Yassin, Peter Shikuku, Patrick Angala, Nduku Kilonzo, William Sinkele, Melania Akinyi

HIV and AIDS

In Kenya, an estimated 30 percent of men report to be alcohol users which may be fueling the HIV pandemic, due to its association with high-risk sexual behavior and reduced inhibitions. The Population Council’s Horizons program collaborated on a study to improve screening of clients for alcohol use, provision of feedback of screening results, and referrals to care and support during voluntary testing and counseling (VCT) for HIV. Overall, the results indicate that it is feasible to integrate alcohol risk reduction counseling into VCT, and that it is generally accepted by providers and clients alike. This study therefore supports the …

HIV and AIDS

The Horizons Program, CORO for Literacy, MAMTA, and Instituto Promundo developed, piloted, and scaled-up a behavior-change intervention in India to examine the effectiveness of interventions to improve young men’s attitudes toward gender roles and sexual relationships, and to reduce HIV risk behaviors and partner violence. The results of this study suggest that young men became less supportive of inequitable gender norms after participating in the interventions. Similarly, there were significant improvements among intervention participants in key outcome indicators, including condom use, partner communication, partner violence, and attitudes toward PLHIV. To maximize the chances of long-term sustainability of these positive changes, …

Caring For Caregivers: An Hiv/Aids Workplace Intervention For Hospital Staff In Zambia—Evaluation Results, Karusa Kiragu, Mutinta Nyumbu, Thabale J. Ngulube, Panganani Njobvu, Chilufya Mwaba, Arthur Kalimbwe, Spike Bradford

HIV and AIDS

The Horizons Program collaborated on a Caring for Caregivers initiative in Zambia whose objective was to develop and test a risk-reduction workplace program for hospital staff. This was motivated by the recognition that hospital workers are often overlooked in HIV programming, and yet many are infected or affected by HIV. It was also motivated by the fact that hospital staff are heterogeneous, with both clinical and non-clinical staff having varying levels of understanding regarding HIV transmission. Caring for Caregivers was a peer education program targeted at hospital staff and implemented in two hospitals in Zambia, with a combined staff of …

HIV and AIDS

This Horizons report from the Swaziland Ministry of Health and Social Welfare discusses findings from an intervention which aimed to reposition postnatal care within the context of a high HIV prevalence environment. The objectives were to determine if changes to the sexual and reproductive health guidelines on postnatal care would result in the timely and quality provision of key components of essential maternal and newborn care in the postnatal period, increase utilization of postnatal care services among all postpartum women, and improve the care and follow up of HIV-positive postpartum women and their infants. The study confirms that the introduction …
