Caribbean-China Relations: Foreign Policy And Small State Economic Adjustment, Dana Marie Morris Jan 2008

Caribbean-China Relations: Foreign Policy And Small State Economic Adjustment, Dana Marie Morris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years the relationship between Caribbean states and China has intensified. This dissertation argues that the Caribbean's increased engagement with China is an important component of their economic adjustment strategy that was necessitated after changes in the orientation of the international economic system that they must operate within, particularly in relation to the loss of trade preferences and the sharp decline in official development assistance.

Despite the seemingly homogenous nature of these Caribbean states there is in fact significant foreign policy variation seen vis-à-vis engagement with China. Some Caribbean states have consistently recognized China, while others have vacillated between …

Clarifying Analysis And Interpretation In Grounded Theory: Using A Conditional Relationship Guide And Reflective Coding Matrix, Karen W. Scott, Dana M. Howell Jan 2008

Clarifying Analysis And Interpretation In Grounded Theory: Using A Conditional Relationship Guide And Reflective Coding Matrix, Karen W. Scott, Dana M. Howell

Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Faculty and Staff Research

Although qualitative methods, grounded theory included, cannot be reduced to formulaic procedures, research tools can clarify the process. The authors discuss two instruments supporting grounded theory analysis and interpretation using two examples from doctoral students. The conditional relationship guide contextualizes the central phenomenon and relates categories linking structure with process. The reflective coding matrix serves as a bridge to the final phase of grounded theory analysis, selective coding and interpretation, and, ultimately, to substantive theory generation.

When Church Teachings And Policy Commitments Collide: Perspectives On Catholics In The U.S. House Of Representatives, William E. Hudson, Elizabeth A. Oldmixon Jan 2008

When Church Teachings And Policy Commitments Collide: Perspectives On Catholics In The U.S. House Of Representatives, William E. Hudson, Elizabeth A. Oldmixon

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article investigates the influence of religious values on domestic social policy-making, with a particular focus on Catholics. We analyze roll call votes in the 109th Congress and find that Catholic identification is associated with support for Catholic Social Teaching, but both younger Catholics and Republican Catholics are found less supportive. In followup interviews with a small sample of Catholic Republicans, we find that they justify voting contrary to Church teaching by seeing its application to domestic social issues as less authoritative than Church moral teachings on issues like abortion.

The Birth Of The European Union: Us And Uk Roles In The Creation Of A Unified European Community, Bruce Carolan Jan 2008

The Birth Of The European Union: Us And Uk Roles In The Creation Of A Unified European Community, Bruce Carolan

Articles

The United States jealously guards its national sovereignty. This has been reflected in reluctance to participate fully in international agreements or organizations with a 'supranational' flavor, such as the International Criminal Court or the Kyoto Protocols. It is therefore surprising to find that the United States was one of the principal architects of the supranational characteristics of what has developed into the European Union. Specifically, the earliest stages of European integration, which is embodied in the European Coal and Steel Community Treaty, were heavily influenced by US insistence on creation of supranational institutions that could exert dominance over sovereign European …

The Maori Of Tourist Brochures Representing Indigenousness, Kjell Olsen Jan 2008

The Maori Of Tourist Brochures Representing Indigenousness, Kjell Olsen

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This study analyses how Maori operators in the tourist industry portray indigenous culture in their brochures. For close to 150 years, Maori people have been involved as entrepreneurs in New Zealand’s tourist industry. Although now integrated into the modern New Zealand nation-state, the representation of their culture in tourism gives an image of a traditional people radically different and set apart from modern New Zealand (Kiwi) culture. Utilising Fabian’s ideas regarding the organisation of otherness through cultural constructions of time and space, this article demonstrates how certain spatial arrangements are necessary to sustain the imaginary temporary division between a modern …

Social Support, Material Circumstance And Health Behaviour: Influences On Health In First Nation And Inuit Communities Of Canada, Chantelle A.M. Richmond, Nancy A. Ross Jan 2008

Social Support, Material Circumstance And Health Behaviour: Influences On Health In First Nation And Inuit Communities Of Canada, Chantelle A.M. Richmond, Nancy A. Ross

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

An expansive literature describes the links between social support and health. Though the bulk of this evidence emphasizes the health-enhancing effect of social support, certain aspects can have negative consequences for health (e.g., social obligations). In the Canadian context, the geographically small and socially interconnected nature of First Nation and Inuit communities provides a unique example through which to explore this relationship. Despite reportedly high levels of social support, many First Nation and Inuit communities endure broad social problems, thereby leading us to question the assumption that social support is primarily health protective. We draw from narrative analysis of inter- …

Challenges To Personal Information Sharing In Interorganizational Settings: Learning From The Quebec Health Smart Card Project, Marie-Claude Trudel Jan 2008

Challenges To Personal Information Sharing In Interorganizational Settings: Learning From The Quebec Health Smart Card Project, Marie-Claude Trudel

Digitized Theses

DEPLOYMENTS of national health information infrastructures (NHII) are slowly- spreading throughout the world. Because they span organizational boundaries and involve many parties with different strategic interests, they are considered interorganizational systems (IOS). The body of literature on IOS poses problems for the health care sector since the latter usually encompasses more types of stakeholders than the usual users and suppliers, its information systems contain sensitive information and it is not driven by profit. Moreover, the conventional MIS models have not been adapted quite yet to account for this more complex reality. Studies about NHII infrastructures have offered fragmented results so …

"The God Idea” And The Literature Of Addiction Narrating The Spiritual Awakening, Jessica M. Natiuk Jan 2008

"The God Idea” And The Literature Of Addiction Narrating The Spiritual Awakening, Jessica M. Natiuk

Digitized Theses

This thesis explores the narration of the spiritual awakening in the Literature of Addiction from a sociological, critical and literary perspective. The term “spiritual awakening” has many synonyms, but here refers to an alteration in behavior which allows for remission of addictive behavior. The history of the Literature of Addiction in the United States and in Russia reveals changing attitudes towards those afflicted. Certain characteristics of addictive behavior are recurring in narrative representation. American modernist writers viewed addiction bleakly, but after the inception of Alcoholics Anonymous, the general public became interested in narratives of recovery. Contemporary addiction memoirs reflect the …

The Impact Of Women's International Migration Through Marriage On Sending Households And Communities In Southeast Asia: The Case Study Of Three Rural Communes Of Southern Vietnam, Linh Giang Tran Jan 2008

The Impact Of Women's International Migration Through Marriage On Sending Households And Communities In Southeast Asia: The Case Study Of Three Rural Communes Of Southern Vietnam, Linh Giang Tran

Digitized Theses

This thesis focuses on the international and marriage-based migration of young Vietnamese women to Taiwan and South Korea. The study examines the economic and social impact of this phenomenon on sending households and communities. The study is based on a survey conducted in 2007 in three communes of Southern Vietnam. The survey sample included 250 bride-sending households and 150 non-bride-sending households, used as a reference group. Individual and focus group interviews were also conducted. The study shows that international marriage migration brings about mixed effects for sending areas. On the one hand, remittances enable households to improve their economic and …

The Development And Professionalisation Of Psychiatry In Canada: An Explorative Study Of The Relationship Between Subspecialties And Their Parent Professions, Yvonne A. Nyinaku Jan 2008

The Development And Professionalisation Of Psychiatry In Canada: An Explorative Study Of The Relationship Between Subspecialties And Their Parent Professions, Yvonne A. Nyinaku

Digitized Theses

In recent times, psychiatry as a practice, profession and a medical subspecialty has received a lot of attention from researchers. Studies on psychiatry have however focused more on issues of social control, treatment modalities and historical accounts than they have on its professional development and role as a professional subspecialty. This thesis will uncover the professionalisation of psychiatry and its relationship with medicine, through a sociological study and analysis of secondary and primary historical sources. From the study, it is revealed that psychiatry’s relationship with regular medicine was shaped by its efforts to gain, enhance and maintain legitimacy. In the …

Childhood Predictors Of Adult Criminality: A Meta-Analysis Drawn From The Prospective Longitudinal Literature, Alan W. Leschied Dr., Debbie Chiodo, Elizabeth Nowicki, Susan Rodger Jan 2008

Childhood Predictors Of Adult Criminality: A Meta-Analysis Drawn From The Prospective Longitudinal Literature, Alan W. Leschied Dr., Debbie Chiodo, Elizabeth Nowicki, Susan Rodger

Education Publications

Sufficient research now exists in the psychology of criminal conduct literature to address the long-term impact of early childhood and adolescent experiences on later adult outcomes. In the present meta-analysis, selected studies were prospective and longitudinal, tracking a variety of early childhood and family factors that could potentially predict later involvement in the adult criminal justice system. Thirty-eight studies met the selection criteria. Major findings indicate that dynamic versus static predictors are related to later adult criminal justice involvement. The older the child was at the time the predictor was measured, the stronger was the relationship to adult offending. Within …

Autoethnography As Constructionist Project, Laura L. Ellingson, Carolyn Ellis Jan 2008

Autoethnography As Constructionist Project, Laura L. Ellingson, Carolyn Ellis

Gender and Sexuality Studies

In this chapter, we explore autoethnography as a social constructionist project. We want to resist the tendency to dichotomize and instead explore how autoethnography makes connections between seemingly polar opposites. Though we see it as a sign of progress that authors desire to tease out differences in autoethnographic projects, we argue that concentrating on dichotomies is counterproductive, given that autoethnography by definition operates as a bridge, connecting autobiography and ethnography in order to study the intersection of self and others, self and culture.

After further detailing in this chapter the limits of dichotomous thinking, we sketch the meanings and goals …

The Influence Of Technology On Adolescent Development: An Eco-Cultural Analysis Of Cybersocial Activity, Stephanie Helsel Jan 2008

The Influence Of Technology On Adolescent Development: An Eco-Cultural Analysis Of Cybersocial Activity, Stephanie Helsel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of new technologies into society inevitably results in culture-wide changes that affect the way people work, learn, and experience leisure time. For those American adolescents with access to technology, the use of the Internet to develop and maintain relationships is quickly becoming ubiquitous, especially through social network sites; the most popular network site, MySpace, has grown exponentially since its creation in 2003. Adolescents are the primary users of such sites and many of them maintain blogs, or online chronicles that are available for public viewing and comment, along with their profile pages and friend networks. This qualitative study …

Engineering-Oriented Professional Development For Secondary Level Teachers: A Multiple Case Study Analysis, Jenny Lynn Daugherty

Dissertations

This study consisted of multiple case studies of selected professional development programs designed to prepare secondary teachers to deliver engineering-oriented education. The focus was on understanding the professional development design, fundamental content knowledge, essential pedagogies, unique challenges, and effective practices involved in this type of professional development. This was achieved by interviewing the leadership, instructors, and participating teachers; observing the in-person workshops; administering a survey to the teachers; and analyzing the project’s documentation. Five professional development programs were examined, including: Engineering the Future, Project Lead the Way, Mathematics Across the Middle School MST Curriculum, The Infinity Project, and INSPIRES.
