Indiana Administrators And Teachers Evaluate Progress With The School Improvement Mandate And The Implementation Of Comprehensive School Reform, Jerry Michael Mckim

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1999 the Indiana General Assembly mandated all Indiana public schools must develop continuous school improvement plans. The actual legislation, Public Law 221, called for school improvement plans to be annually reviewed and revised; have objectives consistent with Indiana academic standards; provide for theEducational needs of all students, even those with exceptionalities; be measurable; and devise a professional development program. School improvement plans where fully implemented with the start of the 2002-2003 school year. The results of the study found there were statistically significant differences between administrators and teachers for ratings on focus and progress of comprehensive school reform. For …

An Analysis Of Faculty Perspectives On The Theory And Practice Of Academic Freedom, Robin R. West Jan 2008

An Analysis Of Faculty Perspectives On The Theory And Practice Of Academic Freedom, Robin R. West

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Academic freedom is a concept said to be poorly defined and misunderstood. Much of the literature on academic freedom suggests that the presumed professorial right is threatened by a variety of internal and external forces. This study examines the theory and practice of academic freedom within the context of instruction in the university classroom. The study attempts to determine if there is a difference between faculty perspectives about the theoretical constructs of academic freedom and its praxis in instructional practice. In other words, "this is what I believe academic freedom is and does, but here is what I have experienced." …

Cyberbullying : A Preventative Method, Kristen A. Hoelscher

Graduate Research Papers

A new means of bullying has been created through the usage of cell phones, pagers, and the internet. Cyberbullying is an aggressive act intended to harm another and is repeated over a duration of time. It involves using digital communication devices to target victims. As a newer phenomenon, the research on cyberbullying is limited. However, the research that has been conducted suggests that cyberbullying is a great cause of concern among our youth today and is an issue that needs to be addressed. A four lesson guidance unit addressing cyberbullying was developed. This unit focuses on creating awareness and educating …

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article illuminates the spectrum of international economic regimes through discussion of an under-theorized regulatory structure in which traditional distinctions between State and market, public and private power, hard and soft law, and international and domestic policy realms, essentially collapse-the "public-private gatekeeper."

Getting What You Ask For: Barriers To Proper Use Of Service Monitoring Tools, Kristina T. Lambright

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

This article provides a greater understanding of the contract monitoring process by identifying barriers that prevent contracted providers from using service monitoring tools properly. To evaluate barriers to proper tool use, seven case studies were conducted on early childhood programs in three communities in upstate New York. The case studies specifically focused on the reporting forms that the early childhood programs completed. Data sources included (a) interviews with government agency and contracted provider employees, (b) content analysis of key documents relating to the service monitoring tools, and (c) attendance at meetings between government agencies and contracted providers on the service …

The Commissioner's New Clothes: The Myth Of Major League Baseball's Antitrust Exemption, Martina M. Tomlinson Jan 2008

The Commissioner's New Clothes: The Myth Of Major League Baseball's Antitrust Exemption, Martina M. Tomlinson

St. Thomas Law Review

In this paper, I will argue that MLB's antitrust exemption has been widely misinterpreted as being much more broadly applicable than the Supreme Court's decision in Flood v. Kuhn actually mandates. Based on the language and the underlying reasoning in the case, Flood should in fact be narrowly interpreted as only exempting MLB's reserve system, not any and all actions undertaken by MLB pertaining to the business of baseball. As mentioned before, the reserve system is no longer in effect due to the collective action taken by players over the years, which has brought about its dismantling. However, even if …

The Alien Invasion, Ediberto Román Jan 2008

The Alien Invasion, Ediberto Román

Faculty Publications

Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, repeatedly complains about strict immigration policies' impact on the ability for businesses to hire skilled workers. In terms of other sectors of the economy, an American Farm Bureau Federation study notes that "if agriculture's access to migrant labor were cut off, as much as $5- 9 billion in annual production of... commodities.., would be lost in the short term. Over the longer term, this annual loss would increase to $6.5-12 billion as the shock worked its way through the sector." Preeminent economist John Kenneth Galbraith effectively responded to those who have advocated for closed borders …

A Global Perspective On Andragogy: An Update, John Henschke Jan 2008

A Global Perspective On Andragogy: An Update, John Henschke

Adult Education Faculty Works

Andragogy has received mixed reviews in the past. Some have analyzed in from a positive perspective. Some have analyzed it from a negative perspective, and some have ignored it altogether. Most of the discussions have limited their observations to how Malcolm S. Knowles addressed andragogy. There has been an inadequate investigation of the foundation and background of andragogy from a world perspective. This research presents 240 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy that may help provide a clear and understandable international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory, and practice of andragogy. Six …

The Denial Of Emergency Protection: Factors Associated With Court Decision Making, Carol E. Jordan, Adam J. Pritchard, Pamela Wilcox, Danielle Duckett-Pritchard

Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women Publications

Despite the importance of civil orders of protection as a legal resource for victims of intimate partner violence, research is limited in this area, and most studies focus on the process following a court’s initial issuance of an emergency order. The purpose of this study is to address a major gap in the literature by examining cases where victims of intimate partner violence are denied access to temporary orders of protection. The study sample included a review of 2,205 petitions that had been denied by a Kentucky court during the 2003 fiscal year. The study offers important insights into the …

Asia Comes To Main Street And May Learn To Speak Spanish: Globalization In A Poor Neighborhood In Worcester, Robert J.S. Ross, Kate Driscoll Derickson Jan 2008

Asia Comes To Main Street And May Learn To Speak Spanish: Globalization In A Poor Neighborhood In Worcester, Robert J.S. Ross, Kate Driscoll Derickson

Local Knowledge: Worcester Area Community-Based Research

This paper considers how and why an Asian enclave of small businesses has appeared in a poor neighborhood characterized by Puerto Rican and other Latino immigration in the post-industrial city of Worcester, Massachusetts. We begin by examining the role of the US in the world system, and argue that the US hegemonic role and specific political economic aspects of global capitalism (ie. deindustrialization) account for some of the migration stream. Next, using socioeconomic and historical data, interviews, and observations, we outline the history of Worcester’s economy and immigration patterns. We demonstrate that the increasing economic inequality leaves few promising employment …
