Infant Feeding Decisions Among Pregnant Black Wic Participants And The Role Of Peer Support, Astrid D. Mickens

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify the important factors that impact infant feeding decisions among Black women, and to determine whether peer support influences the relationship among theoretical constructs of the social learning theory. A convenience sample of 110 Black pregnant women, ages 18-45, attending Women, Infant and Children (WIC) clinics throughout Riverside and San Bernardino Counties were recruited to participate in the study through the Nutrition Services Department. Eligible participants included pregnant Black WIC clients in any stage of pregnancy.

Dewey, Women, And Weirdoes: Or, The Potential Rewards For Scholars Who Dialog Across Difference, Craig A. Cunningham, David Granger, Jane Fowler Morse, Barbara S. Stengel, Terri S. Wilson

Education and Culture

This symposium provides five case studies of the ways that John Dewey's philosophy and practice were influenced by women or "weirdoes" (our choices include F.M. Alexander, Albert Barnes, Helen Bradford Thompson, Elsie Riply Clapp, and Jane Addams) and presents some conclusions about the value of dialoging across difference for philosophers and other scholars.

Concourse Dreams: A Bronx Neighborhood And Its Future, William A. Casari Jan 2008

Concourse Dreams: A Bronx Neighborhood And Its Future, William A. Casari

Publications and Research

This master's thesis focuses on the West Bronx recent past and illustrates what upward mobility meant for the Grand Concourse neighborhood populated with second generation immigrant groups at the beginning of the 20th century, including Jewish, Italian and Irish people. Later, most of the same area became a slum at the hands of city planners, New York City administration, and negative media portrayals. Race and ethnicity became even more talked about when non-white immigrants and migrants began moving to the Grand Concourse in huge numbers after World War Two.Through a celebrated Bronx past before 1950 and eventually the sensational media …

Is Law Just A Means To An End, Roger Cotterrell Jan 2008

Is Law Just A Means To An End, Roger Cotterrell

Socio-Legal Review

This paper examines the claim that law, in complex modern societies, is merely a tool or instrument of private, sectional or governmental purposes. To put matters in perspective, it considers ways in which shared tradiions, common values, emotional allegiances and convergent individual interests have been thought, by legal and social theorists, to be foundations for law - the basis of a 'common good' which law serves. The paper argues that these theoretical views remain instructive. In contemporary multicultural societies there are diverse social foundations on which law's authority and effectiveness depend. The conception of law as 'a means to an …

This research analyzes the impact of the international trade and the foreign investment on the efficiency of the host country. We apply two consecutive steps on the 5 ASEAN member countries data during the period of 1995 - 2005.The first step is the estimation of the frontier model, using the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). The second step is the estimation of inefficiency determinacy model, covering the impact of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI), Other Foreign Investment (OFI), Human Development Index (HDI) and the Financial Market Development (FMD). Localized Bridging Centrality For Distributed Network Analysis, Soumendra Nanda, David Kotz Jan 2008

Localized Bridging Centrality For Distributed Network Analysis, Soumendra Nanda, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

Centrality is a concept often used in social network analysis to study different properties of networks that are modeled as graphs. We present a new centrality metric called Localized Bridging Centrality (LBC). LBC is based on the Bridging Centrality (BC) metric that Hwang et al. recently introduced. Bridging nodes are nodes that are located in between highly connected regions. LBC is capable of identifying bridging nodes with an accuracy comparable to that of the BC metric for most networks. As the name suggests, we use only local information from surrounding nodes to compute the LBC metric, while, global knowledge is …

The Rift Between Faiths: Evolution And Intelligent Design, Nicole Sami Jan 2008

The Rift Between Faiths: Evolution And Intelligent Design, Nicole Sami

Reason and Respect

Intelligent design is the concept in which aspects of creationism and evolution come together to form a single theory. Proponents of this theory believe that a higher being created the first forms of life and then over time these creatures adapted to different environments. Teaching intelligent design could potentially cause a problem within society, however: in a democratic society the belief that a person’s opinions should not be impressed upon by another individual is held in high respect. The question therefore becomes, should intelligent design be taught in American public schools?

The Virtual Teacher's Lounge: How Teachers Meaningfully Connect Through Online Networks, Randall S. Dunn

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study seeks to illuminate an understanding of naturally forming online communities of professional educators in the context of off-line communities. Essentially, an online discussion forum for educators is evaluated for the purpose of determining whether the forum provides a “space” conducive for the development of a community of professional educators as benchmarked against an understanding of offline community formation and existence. The primary approach to this study is qualitative in nature with some quasi-statistical support to elucidate analysis and conclusions. The study employs the use of QSR NVivo 7 to collect, catalogue, and analyze discussions from this online forum, …
