Correlates Of Marital Success A Homogamy Model, Sarah A. Raper Apr 2008

Correlates Of Marital Success A Homogamy Model, Sarah A. Raper

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This paper examines the relationship between five demographic homogamy variables and marital success. Throughout this paper, several questions were examined that seek to give a better understanding of the factors that impact the stability and quality of American marriages. Is homogamy an important issue in modern society, or have cultural advancements in American society made homogamy irrelevant? Do both ascribed and achieved characteristics still impact marital success? Data from wave one of the National Survey of Families and Households was used for the analysis. First, correlations between the heterogamy variables and marital success were evaluated. Next, regression models were used …

The Impact Of Gender, Ethnicity And Instant Offense On The Adjudication And Disposition Stages Of Juvenile Justice Court Cases In Broward County, Florida, Donald G. Campbell Apr 2008

The Impact Of Gender, Ethnicity And Instant Offense On The Adjudication And Disposition Stages Of Juvenile Justice Court Cases In Broward County, Florida, Donald G. Campbell

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This study examined the effect of gender, ethnicity, and instant offense on two decision stages—adjudication and disposition—of juvenile justice court case processing in Broward County, Florida from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2000. Research findings regarding the processing of youth by the juvenile justice system in different jurisdictions have been mixed; however, inequities occur in some jurisdictions but not in others and occur at some decision points but not other decision points. The study is important to determine if Broward County, Florida is engaging in gender and ethnicity disproportionate minority representation and inequities during the adjudication and disposition stages …

Virginia Standards Of Learning: An Analysis Of Sociodemographic Effects On Exam Passing Rates, Anne E. Foster Apr 2008

Virginia Standards Of Learning: An Analysis Of Sociodemographic Effects On Exam Passing Rates, Anne E. Foster

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This study proposed to analyze the effects that sociodemographic variables have on Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) exam passing rates. By analyzing Census data along with passing rates from the Virginia Department of Education, the researcher determined if the independent variables white, non-white, poverty, female-headed household and foreign born explained variance in the SOL passing rates. By using linear regressions for each independent variable as well as a regression for a combination of the independent variables, the researcher was able to show the amount of variance that was explained. The results confirm that variance was present in each test subject …

Review Of The Big Empty; Contemporary Nebraska Nonfiction Writers Edited By Ladette Randolph And Nina Shevchuk-Murray, Becky Faber Apr 2008

Review Of The Big Empty; Contemporary Nebraska Nonfiction Writers Edited By Ladette Randolph And Nina Shevchuk-Murray, Becky Faber

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Ladette Randolph and Nina ShevchukMurray have assembled a powerful collection of essays in The Big Empty, so titled because some people might describe Nebraska in that manner. This text counters that perspective. Each essay writer {save one} has published one book of nonfiction, and the expertise of each is apparent. Included are writers who seem like old friends through works-Ted Kooser, Lisa Knopp, Bill Kloefkorn, Roger Welsch, John Janovy Jr., Paul Johnsgard, Joe Starita, Ruth Raymond Thone, Mary Pipher. Other voices are mixed in, and the result is a fluid collection. Topics include Native American issues, J. Sterling Morton's …

Review Of Cowtown Wichita And The Wild, Wicked West. By Stan Hoig, Robin C. Henry Apr 2008

Review Of Cowtown Wichita And The Wild, Wicked West. By Stan Hoig, Robin C. Henry

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Stan Hoig traces the development of Wichita, Kansas, from a nexus of Native American trading and hunting to a fledgling frontier town, to a crossroads of both the cattle and railroad industries, to an emerging modern city at the close of the nineteenth century. Poised at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers, Wichita's location, Hoig notes, made it ideal for trade and interaction among Indians, military, and cattlemen, and immigrant, African American, and Anglo settlers, all of whom contributed to the city's history.

In his introduction, Hoig states his intention is not to place his narrative into …

Bystander, Paul D. Van Hoy Apr 2008

Bystander, Paul D. Van Hoy

Theses

My thesis raises existential questions about identity and the construction of meaning using language as a premise and platform to provoke inquiry about the distinction between various classifications of viewer. A reexamination of the term bystander compelled me to create violently themed imagery in order to locate boundaries within viewership roles. Although it shares similarities with the roles of observer, spectator, and witness, in terms of the bystanderʼs visual observance of an event, there are unclear connotations that allude to varying degrees of lucidity and sentience among these roles. The agency of the viewer is evaluated by his/her level of …

The Simpsons: A Reflection Of Violence, Theodore S. Huptich Apr 2008

The Simpsons: A Reflection Of Violence, Theodore S. Huptich

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Violence in the media has always been a concern to many people. There have been numerous studies that have reviewed the effect that violent television programming has had on the people that have viewed; most of these studies have shown an increase in aggression in the people that viewed the violent programming. However, there have been very few, if any, studies that have examined the amount and type of violence that exists in television programs. This study uses the television program "The Simpsons", due to its popularity and longevity, to examine the amount and type of violence that exists. This …

Living And Dying On The Margins: A Journey Into The Culture Of Pink And Black Women’S Narrative Accounts Of Breast Cancer, Cleothia Gill Apr 2008

Living And Dying On The Margins: A Journey Into The Culture Of Pink And Black Women’S Narrative Accounts Of Breast Cancer, Cleothia Gill

Masters Theses

This thesis examines black women's understandings of and experiences with breast cancer through the use of narratives. These narratives offer different positions from which to critically analyze the dominate conceptualization of breast cancer in American society, which is primarily associated with white, middle class, heterosexual women. There is a focus on issues such as breast cancer 'risk', increased mortality rates among black women, dominate discourses and media representations of breast cancer, and mastectomy and body image. African American women's stories are used to 'deconstruct' and reveal how this disease is socially constructed in ways that has profound impact on their …

A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of The Educational Needs Of Employers And Non-English Speaking Workers In Arboriculture, Robert M. Ricard, Ana I. Legrand, Diane Wright Hirsch, Tricia Gabany-Guerrero Apr 2008

A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of The Educational Needs Of Employers And Non-English Speaking Workers In Arboriculture, Robert M. Ricard, Ana I. Legrand, Diane Wright Hirsch, Tricia Gabany-Guerrero

Journal of Extension

Arboricultural employers and non-English speaking workers were surveyed to acquire information about their outreach educational needs. Results suggest that language barriers sometimes reduce job performance and threaten worker safety and relationships. Respondents stated that employee performance would improve if workers received English language and cultural training. Method of education mattered, with face-to-face learner and educator contact as the preferred method. It is recommended that arboriculture employers and outreach educators provide English language and cultural outreach education opportunities to arboriculture workers whose first language is not English, then follow this with arboriculture training and information (such as pesticide safety).

Choosing What We Mean By Causation In The Law, Jane Stapleton Apr 2008

Choosing What We Mean By Causation In The Law, Jane Stapleton

Missouri Law Review

In a radical new account of "causation" in the Law, I argue that "causation" is a term we use to express diverse information about the world. Clarity is promoted if we use the term "causation" to refer to the information yielded by only one type of inquiry. Lawyers have used the term to refer to more than one type of enquiry, and philosophers often do not specify an inquiry. The most useful inquiry for legal purposes is one that compares the actual world of a particular phenomenon with a hypothetical world and thereby determines, in the context of that comparison, …

Entrepreneurs On Horseback: Reflections On The Organization Of Law, Darian M. Ibrahim, D. Gordon Smith Apr 2008

Entrepreneurs On Horseback: Reflections On The Organization Of Law, Darian M. Ibrahim, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Publications

“Law and entrepreneurship” is an emerging field of study. Skeptics might wonder whether law and entrepreneurship is a variant of that old canard, the Law of the Horse. In this Essay, we defend law and entrepreneurship against that charge and urge legal scholars to become even more engaged in the wide-ranging scholarly discourse regarding entrepreneurship. In making our case, we argue that research at the intersection of entrepreneurship and law is distinctive. In some instances, legal rules and practices are tailored to the entrepreneurial context, and in other instances, general rules of law find novel expression in the entrepreneurial context. …

Qualitative Research And Its Uses In Health Care, Zakiya Q. Al-Busaidi Mar 2008

Qualitative Research And Its Uses In Health Care, Zakiya Q. Al-Busaidi

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Although relatively uncommon in health care research, qualitative research is now receiving recognition and is increasingly used in health care research with social and cultural dimensions. Unlike quantitative research, which is deductive and tends to analyze phenomena in terms of trends and frequencies, qualitative research seeks to determine the meaning of a phenomenon through description. It aims to develop concepts that aid in the understanding of natural phenomena with emphasis on the meaning, experiences and views of the participants. Differences among qualitative researchers exist on matters of ontology, epistemology, data collection methods and methods of evaluation. The aim of this …

Snooze Alarm: What The Deaths Of Celebrities Can Teach Us About The Dangers Of Insomnia, Gayle Greene Mar 2008

Snooze Alarm: What The Deaths Of Celebrities Can Teach Us About The Dangers Of Insomnia, Gayle Greene

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

When a star dies from an overdose, there's a tendency to write it off as "drug abuse." That amazing combination of drugs in Heath Ledger's body, for instance -- what was he thinking? Blame the celebrity, chalk it up to reckless living, a self-destructive lifestyle, a pursuit of pleasure through recreational drugs. But the drugs that killed Ledger -- three types of benzodiazepines, an antihistamine, two pain relievers -- are all substances people take for sleep.

¿Qué Hacen Los Civilistas En México?, Juan Carlos Marín Mar 2008

¿Qué Hacen Los Civilistas En México?, Juan Carlos Marín

The Latin American and Caribbean Journal of Legal Studies

What happened to private law in Mexico? In the early 20th century, this nation embraced a new world of legal thought, characterized by a 'socialization of law,' a 'social point of view,' or 'sociological jurisprudence,' and at the same time rejoiced in the passing of the nineteenth century world of laissez-faire, autonomous individuals and their rights. This paper examines how, as a result, the growth and development of Mexican private law has been seriously altered and stunted.

Using The Zmet Method To Understand Individual Meanings Created By Video Game Players Through The Player-Super Mario Avatar Relationship, Bradley R. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Video game researchers have recently begun to explore qualitative techniques to understand video games and their audiences. Yet many questions remain concerning the significance of gaming media and how video game research should be conducted. This research addresses the changing focus of video game researchers from the "producers," or sender of the video game, to the "audience" or receiver. This is accomplished in the following ways: by exploring meanings created by individuals while "role-playing" in an electronic world as an on-screen video game avatar; by using the Zaltman metaphor elicitation technique (ZMET), to gather a deeper understanding of how players …

The plaintiffs in this case met their burden of demonstrating the irrationality of Iowa’s statutory exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. They did this, in part, by presenting social science research regarding the irrelevance of sexual orientation to parental ability and the psychological and social well-being of children raised by same-sex parents. In addition to arguing that the marriage exclusion is irrational, the plaintiffs also alleged that the exclusion should be subject to heightened scrutiny because it violates the fundamental right to marry and discriminates on the bases of gender and sexual orientation. Amici agree that the exclusion of same-sex …
