Optimal Dynamic Production And Sales Plans For Innovations In The Presence Of Scarcity Effects, Rahul Patil, Janat Shah
Optimal Dynamic Production And Sales Plans For Innovations In The Presence Of Scarcity Effects, Rahul Patil, Janat Shah
Working Papers
In this paper, we develop an integrated production and sales planning model for a firm that wants to sell an innovation with a fixed market potential under a supply constraint where a new product diffusion process depends upon word of mouth effects of waiting (lost) applicants in addition to adopters and innovators. This allows us to represent scarcity effects and its consequences namely hype and retarding effects. Under a general complete backorder situation, we show that myopic sales plan that sales as much as possible is a dominant policy when the hype effect exists. We also identify situations where the …
Thirty Years After The "Long-Promised Day": Reflections And Expectations, Marcus H. Martins
Thirty Years After The "Long-Promised Day": Reflections And Expectations, Marcus H. Martins
BYU Studies
The announcement of the revelation in 1978, which extended the priesthood to all worthy Latter-day Saint men regardless of race, was celebrated as the arrival of a “long-promised day” (Official Declaration 2). Reflecting on the thirtieth anniversary of that revelation, I feel deep grati- tude to the Lord for sending me to earth in an age in which I would be allowed to hold the priesthood and work in his vineyard. The blessings and privileges my family and I have enjoyed in the Church in those three decades far exceeded any dreams we might have had prior to June 1978.

Globalization, characterized by the inter-connectivity of persons, states, and non-state actors on a global plane, has led to the development of binding international law across several legal fields, namely, international human rights, international criminal law, and private international law. This Article explores the proliferation of actors, norms, and organizations, as well as the expansion of international jurisdiction that has underscored the development of international law over the last half century. The Article focuses on the impact of globalized international law on state actors, as well as on individuals, by reshaping their behavior in the international realm. In particular, this Article …

A Tobacco-Free Service-Learning Pilot Project, Sherry Bassi, Janet Cray, Lois Caldrello
Higher Education
This pilot project was a collaboration between a public university school of nursing in New England and an elementary school in southeastern Connecticut, with 450 student participants. The school was selected because of the presence of poverty, health disparities, and single-parent homes in the population. Eighteen nursing students participated as part of a service-learning project. The nursing students provided tobacco-use education. Fourth and fifth grade students were taught components of the pro-health tobacco education program, the Tar Wars curriculum. Other age-appropriate strategies targeted grades pre-kindergarten through 3. One hundred percent of fourth and fifth grade students achieved the learning objectives; …

Globalism From An African Perspective: The Training Of Lawyers For A New And Challenging Reality, Winston P. Nagan, Marcio Santos
UF Law Faculty Publications
This paper deals with the definition and implications of globalism generally and for African interests in particular. Its focus is on globalism as a cluster of social, economic, and political forces contesting for the controlling paradigm of international relations and international law. The article underscores the general issue of globalism's impact on the well-being of the international community. It also considers the impact of globalism on the U.N. Charter, and, in particular, the role of the United Nations in international economic order. The connections between globalism and society are considered as part of the changing character of war and political …
The Non-Sense Tax: A Reply To New Corporate Income Tax Advocacy, Yariv Brauner
The Non-Sense Tax: A Reply To New Corporate Income Tax Advocacy, Yariv Brauner
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Article challenges recent attempts by influential scholars to rationalize the existence of the corporate income tax. The corporate income tax has long been considered unjustifiable on traditional tax policy grounds. The new justifications recognize this, yet argue that the tax is still desirable because it promotes other goals, such as improvement of corporate governance and restraint of undesirable corporate management power accumulation. This Article demonstrates that the existence and magnitude of these alleged benefits of the corporate income tax are doubtful. Yet, the Article argues, even if taken as correct, the recent rationalization of the corporate income tax cannot …

Modeling the interaction between persons and items at the item level for binary response data, item response theory (IRT) models have been found useful in a wide variety of applications in various fields. This paper provides the requisite information and description of software that implements the Gibbs sampling procedures for the one-, two- and three-parameter normal ogive models. The software developed is written in the MATLAB package IRTuno. The package is flexible enough to allow a user the choice to simulate binary response data, set the number of total or burn-in iterations, specify starting values or prior distributions for model …

Measuring The Relationship Between Organizational Transparency And Employee Trust, Brad R. Rawlins
Measuring The Relationship Between Organizational Transparency And Employee Trust, Brad R. Rawlins
Faculty Publications
The literature on transparency and trust suggest the two concepts are related. While this idea is logical on its face, would it hold true if measured? Using an instrument that measures both transparency and trust, analysis of employee opinion supports this notion. In particular, organizations that encourage and allow public participation, share substantial information so their publics can make informed decisions, give balanced reports that hold them accountable, and open themselves up to public scrutiny, are more likely to be trusted.
Polygamy And Same-Sex Marriage - Allies Or Adversaries Within The Same-Sex Marriage Movement, Jaime M. Gher
Polygamy And Same-Sex Marriage - Allies Or Adversaries Within The Same-Sex Marriage Movement, Jaime M. Gher
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
This article addresses the charged slippery slope accusation that permitting same-sex marriage will inevitably lead to the legalization of polygamy. While same-sex marriage advocates generally distance their cause from polygamy and its disparaging history when responding to such accusations, this article determines whether that response is appropriate, or alternatively, whether the same-sex marriage movement could benefit from linkages between polygamy and same-sex marriage. In conducting the analysis, this article presents a nuanced discussion of marriage and its varying forms. Specifically, it examines the United States' historical regulation of polygamy, interrogates analogies between polygamy and same-sex marriage, compares cross-cultural practices and …
Economists, Value Judgments, And Climate Change: A View From Feminist Economics, Julie A. Nelson
Economists, Value Judgments, And Climate Change: A View From Feminist Economics, Julie A. Nelson
Economics Faculty Publication Series
A number of recent discussions about ethical issues in climate change, as engaged in by economists, have focused on the value of the parameter representing the rate of time preference within models of optimal growth. This essay examines many economists' antipathy to serious discussion of ethical matters, and suggests that the avoidance of questions of intergenerational equity is related to another set of value judgments concerning the quality and objectivity of economic practice. Using insights from feminist philosophy of science and research on high reliability organizations, this essay argues that a more ethically transparent, real-world-oriented, and flexible economic practice would …
Reconciling The Differences Between The “Gender-Responsive” And The “What Works” Literatures To Improve Services For Girls, Dana Jones Hubbard, Betsy Mattews
Reconciling The Differences Between The “Gender-Responsive” And The “What Works” Literatures To Improve Services For Girls, Dana Jones Hubbard, Betsy Mattews
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Recent increases in the delinquency and incarceration of girls have prompted juvenile justice professionals to search for effective, gender-specific prevention and treatment strategies. Given the dearth of research on girls' programming, these professionals are often left to sort out discrepancies between two major bodies of literature that address the needs of delinquent girls—the “what works” literature and the “gender-responsive” literature. This article culls the best of what is available within both these bodies of literature and suggests programmatic elements deemed essential for working effectively with girls.
An Affordable, Practical Eco-House, Dave Fitzpatrick
An Affordable, Practical Eco-House, Dave Fitzpatrick
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
An eco-house or zero-energy house is not a new concept- houses with extremely low impact on their surroundings and good use of local resources have been around for centuries. This particular eco-house is designed to offer full modern services and comforts while consuming very low energy and few expensive building materials. Ideally, someone would be able to use this thesis as a blueprint for actual construction.

Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Highly-Mobile Production Technologies, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier
Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Highly-Mobile Production Technologies, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier
Center for Policy Research
We consider fixed-effect estimation of a production function where inputs and outputs vary over time, space, and cross-sectional unit. Variability in the spatial dimension allows for time-varying individual effects, without parametric assumptions on the effects. Asymptotics along the spatial dimension provide consistency and normality of the marginal products. A finite-sample example is provided: a production function for bottom-trawler fishing vessels in the flatfish fisheries of the Bering Sea. We find significant spatial variability of output (catch) which we exploit in estimation of a harvesting function.

Imag(In)Ing September 11: Ward Churchill, Frame Contestation, And Media Hegemony, Erika G. King, Mary Deyoung
Peer Reviewed Articles
This study analyzes the Denver Post’s reportage on the frame contest between the dominant narrative of the September 11 terrorist attacks set out by President Bush and a challenge to that narrative in an Internet essay by Professor Ward Churchill. The authors find that by refusing to interrogate Churchill’s sociopolitical argument, reducing it to the offensive rhetorical trope “little Eichmanns” he used to describe the victims of the attacks, and pillorying Churchill as a person and scholar, the Post assured his counterframe would not achieve parity with the dominant frame. The authors interpret this as an example of media …

Dyspnea: Effect Of Auricular Acupressure In End Stage Lung Cancer Patients, A Pilot Feasibility Study, Roger Alan Strong Phd
Dissertations
Introduction: Dyspnea is a debilitating symptom, common in advanced lung cancer patients, and poorly controlled. The National Institutes of Health has promoted the need for research regarding end of life care symptom control. Purpose: Conduct a feasibility study evaluating auricular acupressure effects on dyspnea in hospice lung cancer patients. Theoretical framework: The UCSF School of Nursing Symptom Management Faculty Group's Model for Symptom Management was used for the conceptual framework. The model includes three dimensions: symptom experience, symptom management strategies, and symptom outcomes. The Human Energy Field Theory provided context for using auricular acupressure. Aim: Conduct a pilot study evaluating …
When Do Facts Persuade? Some Thoughts On The Market For “Empirical Legal Studies”, Elizabeth Chambliss
When Do Facts Persuade? Some Thoughts On The Market For “Empirical Legal Studies”, Elizabeth Chambliss
Law and Contemporary Problems
Chambliss talks about how Marc Galanter has devoted himself to combating the "jaundiced view" of the civil-justice system. Armed initially with great faith in the power of social science, Galanter and other socio-legal scholars of his generation, as well as many who have followed, have tried to combat misinformation in law and policy with the findings from systematic research--as if the facts would speak for themselves.
A Holistic Vision Of The Socio-Legal Terrain, Brian Z. Tamanaha
A Holistic Vision Of The Socio-Legal Terrain, Brian Z. Tamanaha
Law and Contemporary Problems
Tamanaha discusses Marc Galanter's holistic vision of the socio-legal terrain. Galanter's socio-legal vision has two central overlapping foci, and he always keeps an eye on each and on their interaction. The first focus is the official state legal system, which he examines from every conceivable angle: who becomes lawyers, how are they trained, how many lawyers are there, what are the circumstances of their work environment, who pays for their services. Galanter also focuses on what they are not doing (intentionally or otherwise), inquiring into the implications and consequences of their inaction. These inquiries extend from the official legal system …
Justice In Many Rooms Since Galanter: De-Romanticizing Legal Pluralism Through The Cultural Defense, Mitra Sharafi
Justice In Many Rooms Since Galanter: De-Romanticizing Legal Pluralism Through The Cultural Defense, Mitra Sharafi
Law and Contemporary Problems
Sharafi explores the emergence of legal pluralism during 1970s and 80s and discusses its relation in the cultural defense. Legal pluralism was more than a methodological stance intended to help lawyers and anthropologists talk to each other; it was an ideological commitment. In the 1980s, scholars like Marc Galanter and Sally Merry inaugurated the legal-pluralist sequel to the "what-is-law" debate between legal positivists and natural-law advocate. There are two major changes in the conception of legal pluralism brought about by the works of Galanter and his colleagues. The first was the shift from the understanding of legal pluralism as a …
