Understanding Racial Segregation: What Is Known About The Effect Of Housing Discrimination, Stephen L. Ross Apr 2008

Understanding Racial Segregation: What Is Known About The Effect Of Housing Discrimination, Stephen L. Ross

Economics Working Papers

A central purpose of this chapter is to assess whether the available empirical evidence supports the view that current levels of housing discrimination are a significant contributor to residential segregation in U.S. cities and metropolitan areas. Through the course of this chapter, the reader will find that the empirical patterns of racial segregation in the U.S. are often inconsistent the available evidence on housing discrimination. Admittedly, strong evidence exists that both housing discrimination exists today and that housing discrimination throughout much of the Twentieth Century was central to creating the high levels of segregation that we observe in U.S. metropolitan …

Commentary: Where Is The Economic Analysis Of Payment Law?, Joseph H. Sommer

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Modem payment law began precisely a quarter of a millennium ago, when Lord Mansfield decided Miller v. Race. After 250 years, we know little more than Mansfield, even with the analytic power of modern neoclassical microeconomics. Many of the simplest questions have no easy answer: What is a payment? (The U.C.C. has no definition.) What is payment finality, and why is it important? (There is no consensus, especially because payment finality was law long before bankers discovered its connection to systemic risk.) What is the normative rationale of the clearing and settlement rules in the U.C.C.? (Again, no consensus, …

The Right To Counsel: Policy Reasons For Fundamental Reforms To Promote Access To Justice, Adrian Scotchmer Apr 2008

The Right To Counsel: Policy Reasons For Fundamental Reforms To Promote Access To Justice, Adrian Scotchmer

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy

This article argues that it is highly undesirable that legal costs impede, and often preclude access to counsel. Even if access to counsel is not a constitutional right in itself, as the Supreme Court of Canada held in Christie, the arguments advanced by the plaintiff in Christie when supplemented by other considerations, establish the importance of access to counsel as a matter of policy. As such, the law societies and the governments of Canada ought to do more to promote access to counsel. Specifically, the law societies ought to reduce market-entry and market-conduct restrictions and increase the use of existing …

Religion In The Workplace: Faith, Action, And The Religious Foundations Of American Employment Law, Thomas C. Kohler Apr 2008

Religion In The Workplace: Faith, Action, And The Religious Foundations Of American Employment Law, Thomas C. Kohler

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Religion in the workplace tends to make us uneasy-an intruder in a world of Weberian rationality. Nevertheless, while relatively few of us realize it, our labor and employment law has a strongly religious foundation, without which we would have little of the legal structure with which we are familiar. In this address, I will expose this foundation, and suggest that we only fully can understand the dynamics of the law in this area in light of the religious influences that gave our law its form. Secondly, I will suggest that the crisis that employment law finds itself in—and not just …

High Status Men (But Not Women) Capture The Eye Of The Beholder, C. Nathan Dewall, Jon K. Maner Apr 2008

High Status Men (But Not Women) Capture The Eye Of The Beholder, C. Nathan Dewall, Jon K. Maner

Psychology Faculty Publications

Two studies tested the hypothesis that people attend preferentially to high status men (but not women). Participants overestimated the frequency of high status men in rapidly presented arrays (Experiment 1) and fixated their visual attention on high status men in an eye-tracking study (Experiment 2). Neither study showed any evidence of preferential attention to high status women, but there was evidence that physically attractive women captured attention. The results from both studies support evolutionary theories regarding differential prioritization of social status and physical attractiveness in men versus women. These findings illustrate how examination of early-in-the-stream social cognition can provide useful …

Preventing High-Risk Drinking In Youth In The Workplace: A Web-Based Normative Feedback Program, Diana M. Doumas, Elizabeth Hannah

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study evaluated the efficacy of an alcohol web-based personalized feedback program delivered in the workplace to young adults. Participants (N = 124) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: web-based feedback (WI), web-based feedback plus a 15-minute motivational interviewing session (MI), or a control group. Results indicated participants in the intervention group (WI and MI conditions combined) reported significantly lower levels of drinking than those in the control group at a 30-day follow-up. This was particularly true for participants classified as high-risk drinkers at the baseline assessment. Similar results were found when comparing the WI condition to the …

Intratexturealities: The Poetics Of The Freedom Schools, Vonzell Agosto Apr 2008

Intratexturealities: The Poetics Of The Freedom Schools, Vonzell Agosto

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications

Freedom Schools, which operated during 1964 after the collaborative efforts of several Civil Rights organizations, provided an opportunity to understand how students can drive the curriculum to meet individual and collective needs within a community. The presence and use of poetry throughout the Freedom Schools was mysterious, given that it is virtually absent in the curriculum guide, memos, and documents prepared by the administrative staff members and teachers. Students’ poetry not only revealed the intersections and layers of lived experience, society, and culture, but also their agency in the context of an anti-oppressive education project.

The Culture Of Honors, George Mariz Apr 2008

The Culture Of Honors, George Mariz

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

What is it that we talk or write about when we talk or write about the culture of honors? Almost always we begin with the second term in the phrase, i.e., honors, the enterprise embodied in programs and colleges in which virtually all of the readers of this journal are engaged. If we think at all about the first term, culture, it is almost certainly for no more than a few minutes, if at all, and then move forward to the really important work. As I write this piece, I am at the moment creating a syllabus for a class …

Women Leaders And Entrepreneurs: Learning From One To Teach The Other, Margareta Smith Knopik Ph.D., Tammy Moerer Ph.D., A.P.R.

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Motivated, visionary, energetic, hard working, creative, tough-minded, responsible, inspiring. Do these words describe leaders or entrepreneurs or both? This paper summarizes research conducted in the fields of leadership and entrepreneurship throughout the past 30 years, attempting to identify similarities and differences between female leaders and entrepreneurs. The purpose is to use what is found to develop recommendations and strategies designed to strengthen leadership and entrepreneurship education. Those of us who teach economics introduce and discuss the factors of production: raw materials, labor, capital, and entrepreneurial ability. The first three are tangible and relatively easy to explain; however, the fourth, entrepreneurial …

Balancing Safety And Normalcy: A Study Of Parents' Management Of Young Children's Severe Food Allergies, Leslie Brook Graceffo Apr 2008

Balancing Safety And Normalcy: A Study Of Parents' Management Of Young Children's Severe Food Allergies, Leslie Brook Graceffo

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

While severe food allergies have been extensively studied by physicians, sociologists have not yet examined the parental management of children's severe food allergies. In this thesis, I examine how parents negotiate physical, emotional, and social issues that arise in daily life with a severely allergic child. Severe food allergy management is not an easy task given the potentially fatalistic nature of severe food allergies coupled with the inadequate level of social awareness of such allergies. In order to better understand the parental management of food allergies, I interviewed twelve parents of severely food allergic children regarding the various spheres of …

Analyzing Service Barriers For Trafficked Persons In The Context Of The U.S. Refugee Program: Strategies To Improve Service Delivery And Program Management, Hoa Duong, Tanya Ghani, Myra Valenzuela

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Research Question: The goal of this research study is to examine the specific barriers and needs of refugees and trafficked persons in the context of federal benefits and programs. The study asks the following questions:
• Are there differences in the needs of refugees and trafficked persons?
• What services exist for both groups and are there gaps in service delivery?
• How can program management within ATIP help improve service delivery?

Findings: The research study’s main findings indicate that although refugees and trafficked persons are similar in many ways, the latter have unique ongoing needs that require a more …

Exploring The Librarian's Role In Promoting Academic Integrity On Campus, Candice Benjes-Small, Eric Ackerman, Kevin Tapp Apr 2008

Exploring The Librarian's Role In Promoting Academic Integrity On Campus, Candice Benjes-Small, Eric Ackerman, Kevin Tapp

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006

ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards outcomes include students identifying issues related to intellectual property and copyright, and using a citation style accurately to document sources. But is teaching these outcomes the responsibility of professors or instruction librarians?

At Radford University, the librarians recognized that students were struggling with academic integrity issues, including plagiarism, paraphrasing, and citing sources properly. The librarians quickly developed programs to fill in gaps on campus. They hold brown bag lunches for faculty and student workshops on topics such as plagiarism, reading citations, and formatting references according to APA Style. Recently, they were asked to teach …

Grains Of Learning: Learning Objects & Library Instruction, Deborah Diller

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006

This session will illustrate how new technologies assist instruction librarians in adding variety, interaction, and content into the information literacy curriculum. There will be a lively hour of exploration about a Grain of Learning and putting learning objects to work for students in the classroom setting, a correspondence course, and an online classroom. The classroom settings will focus on a teacher-led large group review, pretest, or small group activity and a learner-driven individual or partner review, pretest, or small group. The correspondence course looks at assignments and activities, and the online classroom includes a pretest, review, or assigned activity. Samples …

Slavery And "Abuse Regeneration", Christine Bell Apr 2008

Slavery And "Abuse Regeneration", Christine Bell

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Skinner’s depiction of modern day slavery is graphic and challenging. Anyone viewing prohibitions on slavery, or abolition, as historical anachronism, or requiring reinterpretation for modern-day practices, must think again. Skinner persuades us that slavery in its most old fashioned sense is alive and well and, worse than that–on the rise.

Antecedents Of Entrepreneurial Orientation: A Contingency Approach, Laurent Stephane Josien Apr 2008

Antecedents Of Entrepreneurial Orientation: A Contingency Approach, Laurent Stephane Josien

Doctoral Dissertations

This research was created in order to offer a better understanding of the entrepreneurial orientation construct. Based on the literature review several antecedents of the entrepreneurial orientation construct were identified: risk, achievement, innovation, locus of control, self-esteem, opportunity, autonomy, proactiveness, and competitive aggressiveness. Relying on the contingency theory developed by Burns and Stalker (1961), it was decided to use the Carland's trichotomy of entrepreneurs as a moderator variable between the antecedents and the entrepreneurial orientation construct. As a result, three main areas of research were identified. The first area deals with determining which dimensions are underpinning the entrepreneurial orientation construct, …

Out Of The Closet Or Under The Rug: An Analysis Of Same-Sex Domestic Violence In Idaho, Carol Mchann Apr 2008

Out Of The Closet Or Under The Rug: An Analysis Of Same-Sex Domestic Violence In Idaho, Carol Mchann

McNair Scholars Research Journal

To date, there have been a limited number of studies that focus on the events of terror and injury, identified as domestic violence, as it occurs within the lives of homosexual couples. Through a review of academic articles and an analysis of government statistical data, this paper will address the prevalence of reported incidents of domestic violence within same-sex couples in the state of Idaho as compared to those reported nationally. The incidents of same-sex domestic violence within the state of Idaho will also be compared to incidents within heterosexual couples at the state and national levels to access the …
