The Oak Park Redevelopment Plan: Housing Policy Implications For A Community Undergoing Early Stage Gentrification, Joaquin Castañeda
The Oak Park Redevelopment Plan: Housing Policy Implications For A Community Undergoing Early Stage Gentrification, Joaquin Castañeda
NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings
Abstract:
With the reemerging discussion of gentrification in the urban landscape, an exploratory case study of the Oak Park Redevelopment Plan in Sacramento, CA, was conducted in order to better understand the community’s gentrifying characteristics and the implications once the redevelopment goals are met. In addition, a Conceptual Framework [CF] was formulated in order to unpack the components and processes of gentrification. The findings suggest that the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency’s redevelopment polices act as a catalyst for gentrification that exclusively favors the in-migration of middle- and upper-income residents into the area at the expense of lower-income residents. These …
Looking Beyond “Mow, Blow And Go”: A Case Study Of Mexican Immigrant Gardeners In Los Angeles, Alvaro Huerta
Looking Beyond “Mow, Blow And Go”: A Case Study Of Mexican Immigrant Gardeners In Los Angeles, Alvaro Huerta
NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings
Abstract:
Recent research on Mexican immigrants focuses on the working conditions of farm workers, garment workers, janitors and day laborers. This coincides with successful efforts by organized labor and immigrant advocacy groups to organize these marginalized workforces. Little attention, however, has been given to Mexican paid gardeners. As part of the household service economy, paid gardeners represent a difficult labor sector to organize and research because they typically operate as independent contractors in the informal economy. This paper seeks to provide a more holistic picture of this dynamic, informal workforce. Drawing primarily upon ethnographic techniques, the paper documents how this …

“La Primavera Del Inmigrante”: Media And Voice In The Making Of Chicago’S Immigrant Rights’ Movement, 2005-2006, Juan Mora-Torres
NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings
Abstract:
As the most draconian legislative bill in modern immigration history, the Sensenbrenner Bill (H.R. 4437) aimed to criminalize the eleven million people living in this country without legal documents. What was intended to be the last nail on the “illegal alien” coffin instead generated a political blowback—it set in motion mass protests on a scale which had no parallel in American history. What began in Chicago on March 10, 2006 became contagious, spreading to the rest of the country at a speed that caught all by surprise. Millions participated in dozens of events in what came to be known …

NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings
Introduction
The online publication of the proceedings for the 2008 conference held Austin, Tejas marks the beginning of a new era for the NACCS! Rather than using precious tree resources to print the proceedings, the National Board decided at the mid-year meeting before the Austin conference to publish the proceedings electronically. Not only would this ensure that all future conference proceedings would be available to members from any computer terminal at any time, but new members would be able to review the intellectual and activist trajectory of the association through e-proceedings. In addition, as digital media and information communication technology …

When Cultures Collide: The Kanaka Maoli And The Haole Women And The Suppression And Resurgence Of Hawai‘Ian Traditional Beliefs, Roxanne O'Connell
Reason and Respect
The traditional and ritual beliefs of the Kanaka Maoli are intimately connected to Hawaiian identity and the relationship between the person and the universe. Therefore any examination of these, by extension, is an examination of the Kanaka Maoli way of life. This essay examines pre-haole Hawaiian culture, the diminishing of women’s presence and authority during the missionary period through annexation, and the recent women activist voices that have emerged as part of the sovereignty discourse.

Citizens for Peace
The film “Building a World Beyond War: A Roadmap for Citizens” was viewed by the group. It is meant to inspire us to look more deeply at shared assumptions that must shift in order for us to accept differences and adopt practical, nonviolent alternatives to war. The film also presents hopeful examples of effective strategies that result in safety and security for all the world’s people. The Mission: Beyond War is a community of people from around the world who are committed to ending the use of warfare in this century. They explore, model and promote practical ways of resolving …

Predicting Physical Activity In Arab American School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry, Bo Shen
Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
Theoretically grounded research on the determinants of Arab American children's physical activity is virtually nonexistent. Thus, the purpose of our investigation was to evaluate the ability of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and social cognitive theory (SCT) to predict Arab American children's moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Children (N = 348, ages 10–14) completed questionnaires assessing the TPB and SCT constructs as well as MVPA. Using multiple regression analyses we were able to account for 9% of the variance in MVPA. Based on standardized beta-weights, variance accounted for, and the significance of F change, we concluded that SCT variables …

Parental Influences On Adolescent Girl's Goal Orientations, Perceived Competence, Sport Friendship Quality, And Enjoyment, Carla L. Paiffy, Jeffrey J. Martin
Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships among critical sport psychosocial perceptions of fathers (N=84), mothers (N=84), and daughters (N=84) in the same family (N=252). Athlete participants were young female soccer players ranging in age from 9 to 14 years. A canonical correlation analysis revealed a significant overall multivariate relationship (Wilks's λ = .485, p<.0001) and one significant function emerged (Rc = .64). The loadings suggested that athlete's perceptions of both mother and father created task involving and worry conducive climates all contributed to the multivariate relationship, predicting athlete's perceived competence, sport friendship …

"How do the rich get rich?” Against the backdrop of Asia’s spectacular rise as a global economic powerhouse, how a handful of wealthy Chinese business leaders in east and southeast Asia built their global fortunes and reputations is the focus of a joint study by sociology professors Chung Wai Keung of Singapore Management University and Gary G. Hamilton of the University of Washington. The authors delve into more than a century of regional commerce and trade to better understand the Chinese business elites of today. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Highly-Mobile Production Technologies, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier
Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Highly-Mobile Production Technologies, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier
Economics - All Scholarship
We consider fixed-effect estimation of a production function where inputs and outputs vary over time, space, and cross-sectional unit. Variability in the spatial dimension allows for time-varying individual effects, without parametric assumptions on the effects. Asymptotics along the spatial dimension provide consistency and normality of the marginal products. A finite-sample example is provided: a production function for bottom-trawler fishing vessels in the flatfish fisheries of the Bering Sea. We find significant spatial variability of output (catch) which we exploit in estimation of a harvesting function.

Profile: The Importance Of Place, University Relations
Profile: The Importance Of Place, University Relations
Profile (1996-)
Those of us who live in Morris are reminded of the pull of "place" every time we face the juxtaposition of rural and urban--when we move from the Morris rush-minute at Fifth and Atlantic to the 494 rush-hour of the Twin Cities. We are reminded of place every time we are called on to explain to our urban friends what it is people do here. In this sense--in the lack of knowledge of the rural and how rich our lives are here--Morris and its environs take on a kind of exotic, unknown, "other" quality. To those who have never left …

Church And Society: The Laurence J. Mcginley Lectures, 1988-2007, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., Robert P. Imbelli
Religion
One of the leading theologians of our time, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., has written and lectured on a wide range of topics across his distinguished career, and for a wide range of audiences. Integrating faith and scholarship, he has created a rich body of work that, in the words of one observer, is “both faithful to Catholic tradition and fresh in its engagement with the contemporary world.”
Here, brought together for the first time in one volume, are the talks Cardinal Dulles has given twice each year since the Laurence J. McGinley Lectures were initiated in 1988, conceived broadly as …
