Mapping The Evolution Of 'Food Deserts' In A Canadian City: Supermarket Accessibility In London, Ontario, 1961–2005, Kristian Larsen, Jason Gilliland
Geography & Environment Publications
Background: A growing body of research suggests that the suburbanization of food retailers in North America and the United Kingdom in recent decades has contributed to the emergence of urban 'food deserts', or disadvantaged areas of cities with relatively poor access to healthy and affordable food. This paper explores the evolution of food deserts in a mid-sized Canadian city (London, Ontario) by using a geographic information system (GIS) to map the precise locations of supermarkets in 1961 and 2005; multiple techniques of network analysis were used to assess changing levels of supermarket access in relation to neighbourhood location, socioeconomic characteristics, …

Toward A New Perspective In Literary Criticism: Transgenerational Psychoanalysis And Anasemic Procedures, Gustav Arnold
Toward A New Perspective In Literary Criticism: Transgenerational Psychoanalysis And Anasemic Procedures, Gustav Arnold
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation—Toward a New Perspective in Literary Criticism: Transgenerational Psychoanalysis and Anasemic Procedures"—is a contribution to literary criticism. It offers a new perspective in psychoanalytical criticism on how characters in literary narratives can be interpreted. By examining key concepts in psychoanalysis, which have been used in the humanities for decades, the present inquiry draws on transgenerational psychology, as elaborated by German and French theorists, and anasemic interpretations generated by M. Torok and N. Abraham's psychoanalytical approach. Based on the assumption that a character's psychic life is determined by factors that cannot be confined to intrapsychic processes alone, the transgenerational perspective …

Writing Identity And The Writers' Workshop : Looking Back At My Second Grade Classroom, Jacquelyn R. Hicks
Writing Identity And The Writers' Workshop : Looking Back At My Second Grade Classroom, Jacquelyn R. Hicks
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The writing workshop, a philosophy and method of writing instruction that grew out of the writing process movement, is a powerful method of teaching writing because it encourages students to develop a writing identity. My second grade experience with the writing workshop gave me a lasting connection with writing. Looking back at that classroom and the writing workshop in general, I argue that tone, the basics of time, process and choice, a literature-rich environment, and a community focus all contribute to students' identities as young writers. Identification with writing is important because it motivates students to pursue writing beyond the …

Keeping The Home Fires Burning: The Effects Of Military Induced Separations On Marital Intimacy From A Female Perspective, Deborah J. Cynar
Keeping The Home Fires Burning: The Effects Of Military Induced Separations On Marital Intimacy From A Female Perspective, Deborah J. Cynar
Communication
In this study, a convenience sample of 56 female, married, military wives in northwestern community responded to a survey questionnaire concerning intimacy promoting communication skills, marital satisfaction, and military induced separations. The results indicated a strong correlation between marital satisfaction and intimacy promoting communication skills. This study also explores the difference between the type and frequency of military induced separations and their influence on marital satisfaction and intimacy promoting communication skills. To further describe this military population, several post hoc tests for difference found significance between military branch affiliation, and between those who had or had not received premarital counseling …

Cultivating Sustainability Through Participatory Action Research: Place -Based Education And Community Food Systems In Interior Alaska, Laura R. Henry-Stone
Cultivating Sustainability Through Participatory Action Research: Place -Based Education And Community Food Systems In Interior Alaska, Laura R. Henry-Stone
Indigenous Studies
As the environmental movement grows into a broader sustainability revolution, we must move beyond the traditional scope of environmental education to address social-ecological challenges through integrated education for sustainability. This research explores how place-based education can promote sustainability of a community food system in which feedbacks between production and consumption are integrated within a biocultural region. Through participatory action research, the project develops and demonstrates pedagogical components of sustainability that are applicable to formal and non-formal educational contexts. In this pedagogy, the purpose of sustainability education is to foster a community culture that will promote the emergence of sustainability in …

Survey Research On The Relationship Between Immediacy Behaviors, Communication Competency, And Philanthropic Success, Emily Cameron Drygas
Survey Research On The Relationship Between Immediacy Behaviors, Communication Competency, And Philanthropic Success, Emily Cameron Drygas
Communication
In this study, 124 Alaskan-based development professionals responded to a questionnaire concerning their perceived communicative competency and their self-reported immediacy behaviors in relation to fund-raising success. Several key findings resulted. First, in relation to the role of communication competency, this study suggests that fund-raising success is driven by the donor, rather than the fund-raising professional's communication competency. Second, the study found that successful fund-raising professionals have higher levels of verbal and non-verbal immediacy behaviors (when compared to non-successful fundraisers). Third, this study finds that development professionals who work in the geographic region of Northern Alaska use less verbal immediacy behaviors …
A Narrative Study Of The Lived Experience Of Contemporary American Women In Intimate Relationships With Men Who Have Chronic Low Back Pain, Gina Heath
Communication
Everyone experiences pain to one degree or another, but pain that has outlived its usefulness in assisting the body to avoid injury, and causes other physical and emotional complications, is known as chronic pain. In American medicine, chronic pain is described as that which persists longer than six months and is not relieved by standard medical care. Chronic pain usually leads to a spectrum of other physical and emotional complications, including sleep disturbance, loss of appetite, and severe depression, among many others. Creating and maintaining relationships with others takes effort and energy, and this is especially true in a marital …

Relational Methodology For Data Mining And Knowledge Discovery, Engenii Vityaev, Boris Kovalerchuk
Relational Methodology For Data Mining And Knowledge Discovery, Engenii Vityaev, Boris Kovalerchuk
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Knowledge discovery and data mining methods have been successful in many domains. However, their abilities to build or discover a domain theory remain unclear. This is largely due to the fact that many fundamental KDD&DM methodological questions are still unexplored such as (1) the nature of the information contained in input data relative to the domain theory, and (2) the nature of the knowledge that these methods discover. The goal of this paper is to clarify methodological questions of KDD&DM methods. This is done by using the concept of Relational Data Mining (RDM), representative measurement theory, an ontology of a …

Politics Honors Papers
Through examining the levels of integration in public and private schools across the United States, it is clear that the spirit of Brown v. Board of Education was never fulfilled. Students are still learning in an overwhelmingly homogeneous environment. Even in diverse neighborhoods there is a difference: the poor and minority children attend the public schools and the wealthy children attend private school. Thus, the urban public schools remain overwhelmingly minority, while private schools are overwhelmingly white. There is a clear discrepancy between black and white students in terms of size of school and quality of education.
