Creating A Theoretical Framework For Understanding Homeland Security Using Multiple Frame Analysis, Linda Ann Kiltz May 2008

Creating A Theoretical Framework For Understanding Homeland Security Using Multiple Frame Analysis, Linda Ann Kiltz

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to begin the effort to build a theoretical foundation for homeland security policy by analyzing the 1993 World Trade Center terrorist attack using multiple frame analysis (MFA). MFA consisted of three conceptual lenses: (I)-Homeland Security as a Criminal Justice Problem/Terrorism as Crime, (II)-Homeland Security as a International Relations Problem/Terrorism as War, and (III)-Homeland Security as an Organization Design Problem/Terrorism as a Network. These lenses were applied to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing using a case study methodology, thus creating a framework to analyze a singular critical event from multiple perspectives.

This research was …

En-Gendering The Couple-Deity Relationship: Clinical Implications Of Power And Process, Brandt C. Gardner, Mark H. Butler, Ryan B. Seedall May 2008

En-Gendering The Couple-Deity Relationship: Clinical Implications Of Power And Process, Brandt C. Gardner, Mark H. Butler, Ryan B. Seedall

Faculty Publications

Spiritual practices are increasingly accommodated by therapists working with religious couples. While research documents potential benefits, spiritual practices such as prayer may invoke an interpretive couple-God relationship distorted by pathogenic processes in one or both spouses. A survey administered to 78 religious couples examined the influence of power/gender as it relates to couples’ harmful triangulation with Deity. Results suggest that harmful triangulation with Deity does occur to some degree in couple relationships, that there are significant differences by gender, and that spouses’ tendencies to triangulate are correlated with one another. We discuss these results from a systemic-feminist perspective, and offer …

Confronting Childhood: Courts And The Contradictions Of Juvenile Justice, Clare F. Ryan May 2008

Confronting Childhood: Courts And The Contradictions Of Juvenile Justice, Clare F. Ryan

Political Science Honors Projects

For decades, the juvenile court has struggled to contain two contradictory, but necessary theories of justice. This project employs an in-depth, single case study of an urban juvenile court to demonstrate that contradictory juvenile justice models constrain court actors, while also giving them discretion. Individuals within the juvenile system hold ultimate responsibility for incorporating the rehabilitative juvenile model and the traditional criminal model into their roles and practices. Court actors structure interactions and goals based on attitudes regarding juvenile identity, self-identity, and blame in order to reconcile institutional ambiguities and produce fair and just results.

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Representation Of Asian Indian Folk Tales In Us-American Children's Literature, Sudeshna Roy May 2008

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Representation Of Asian Indian Folk Tales In Us-American Children's Literature, Sudeshna Roy

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "A Critical Discourse Analysis of Representation of Asian Indian Folk Tales in US-American Children's Literature," Sudeshna Roy explores the representation of India in U.S. children's picture books by interpreting prevailing images of the subcontinent and its peoples and their impact on children's understandings. Roy analyzes three key elements -- titles, illustrations, and text -- identifying a set of predominant themes: nature and wild animals, poverty and hardship, spiritual hermits, and wit and common sense wisdom. From these findings, Roy suggests that Eurocentric imperial ideologies continue to inform the formulation of race, gender, and nation in U.S. children's …

It Was And It Isn't: A Rhetorical Exploration Of Simulacra In Emerging Church Vintage Worship, Kevin Paul Mahan May 2008

It Was And It Isn't: A Rhetorical Exploration Of Simulacra In Emerging Church Vintage Worship, Kevin Paul Mahan

Masters Theses

Ironically, a new vintage movement of worship was being taught in a certain strand of the emerging church movement. Dan Kimball, pastor at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, California, established his teachings to reach the postmodern generation absent from seeker-sensitive churches in a text called The Emerging Church: Vintage Christianity for New Generations. This text suggested many elements, or symbols, for worshipers to include in vintage faith worship gatherings that would connect with the post-Christian culture. Eight of these symbols were chosen – the band, technology, video screen broadcasts, life-stage groups, ancient structures, light, symbols of the faith, and …

The Pedagogy Of Community-Based Learning: Do Students Learn?, Pandeli Glavanis May 2008

The Pedagogy Of Community-Based Learning: Do Students Learn?, Pandeli Glavanis

Faculty Journal Articles

In many respects the two quotes above exemplify two of the core issues in modern pedagogy and especially those related to active learning and teaching methodologies that highlight critical thinking. Einstein’s quote underscores the role of the professor as the facilitator which in turn enhances student-led learning and thus critical thinking. On the other hand Adams highlights the very critical dimension of education; namely that it is also a tool to be used in daily life and not just abstract theory for “ivory tower” academia. Thus, the two quotes combined also exemplify the philosophy of community-based learning which is at …

The Increase Of Bipolar Disorder In Children And Adolescents, Kristen Wroblewski May 2008

The Increase Of Bipolar Disorder In Children And Adolescents, Kristen Wroblewski

Social Work Theses

This cluster study investigates the different possibilities that may have caused an increase in the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder in children and adolescents, including comparison to diagnosis in other countries. The same criteria for diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder for adults are used for children and adolescents, which may be misdiagnosed due to other disorders having the same characteristics, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In the cluster study, current and past students’ files at an alternative school were analyzed to determine whether the diagnosis had increased within the setting. Main findings were that Bipolar Disorder did increase over the …

Tradition Of African Story Telling: Oral Literature In The Homes And Schools (Pre-School/Kindergarten) Of Northern Malawi, Elisabeth Hangartner-Everts May 2008

Tradition Of African Story Telling: Oral Literature In The Homes And Schools (Pre-School/Kindergarten) Of Northern Malawi, Elisabeth Hangartner-Everts

College of Education and Human Services Student Publications

Writing about the story telling tradition in a limited area of the northern region of Malawi may seem far-fetched. Malawi is a small, poor country lying at the southern tip of the East African Rift Valley. The majority of people in the Western Developed World have never heard of this landlocked country in subequatorial Africa, commonly referred to by Malawians as “the warm heart of Africa.” (Catholic Relief Services, 2007, pp. 7-9). The few that are aware of its existence are international aid workers and some courageous eco-tourists crisscrossing the country by bike. One cannot ignore the dire poverty of …

Promoting Democracy: American And European Thinking And Strategy, Paul M. Bisca May 2008

Promoting Democracy: American And European Thinking And Strategy, Paul M. Bisca

International Studies Honors Projects

My thesis investigates the use of democracy promotion as an instrument of foreign policy. Through a comparative analysis of the United States and European Union (EU), the paper examines how different conceptions of democracy, power and the role of the state have led to divergent intellectual and strategic approaches towards democratization. The feasibility of these approaches is then tested in the context of Hamas' electoral victory in the 2006 Palestinian elections. Though neither has been practically successful, the EU model has proven to be conceptually better equipped to cope with the challenges of spreading democracy in the age of globalization.

Imagined Bridges: Welfare Rights Collaboration Among Women Of Color And The Lgbt Community In Minnesota, Allison A. Macwilliams-Brooks May 2008

Imagined Bridges: Welfare Rights Collaboration Among Women Of Color And The Lgbt Community In Minnesota, Allison A. Macwilliams-Brooks

Political Science Honors Projects

Women of color and LGBT individuals share a history of social welfare policy discrimination, yet scholars rarely examine how activist coalitions influence the direction of contemporary welfare policy. Considering the recently increased importance of state-level welfare policymaking, this project investigates the extent to which coalition-building among such communities explains the path of Minnesota’s welfare policies. Drawing upon interviews with women’s rights activists, LGBT activists, and state legislators, this study demonstrates that organizational collaboration is constrained and welfare rights issues often fail to generate action. Improving Minnesota’s welfare program will require balancing groups’ organizing priorities with the interests of their most …

Bonneville Power Administration And The Creation Of The Pacific Intertie, 1958 -1964, Joshua D. Binus

Dissertations and Theses

Construction of the Pacific Northwest-Pacific Southwest Intertie (also known as the Pacific Intertie) began in 1964, following the culmination of a series of interrelated negotiations which included: 1) the planning for the construction and operation of the Pacific Intertie; 2) the passage of federal legislation that put limits on the export of electricity from the regions where it was generated; and 3) the full ratification of the Columbia River Treaty between the United States and Canada. By 1970, with construction complete, the Pacific Intertie allowed for the movement of more than 4,000,000 kilowatts of power among the electrical systems of …

Foundations And Interpretations Of Quantum Mechanics, Cory Johnson May 2008

Foundations And Interpretations Of Quantum Mechanics, Cory Johnson

Honors Theses

The first famous thought experiment of Einstein gives rise to his theories of relativity, the bedrock of modern astrophysics and cosmology. His second famous thought experiment begins the investigation into the foundations of quantum mechanics. It leads to a paradox, inspiring various 'no-go' theorems proven by Bell, Kochen, and Specker. Physicists and philosophers worldwide become increasingly dissatisfied with the probabilistic complementarity interpretation (Born-Bohr) and eventually offer their own accounts of the theory. By the end of the 20th century two alternative approaches stand out as the best candidates: Both the hidden variables interpretation (de Broglie-Bohm) and the many worlds interpretation …
